Qian Xuesen is one of the greatest scientists who devoted all their lives to China's science and technology. In 1911, he was born in Hangzhou, eastern China.

Qian received a mechanical engineering degree in 1934 in Shanghai and went to the United States on a scholarship to study aeronautical engineering at MIT at the age of 23. As a student at MIT, and later as a scientist and teacher at the California Institute of Technology, Mr.Qian played a central role in early United States' efforts to develop jet aircraft and rocketry technology.

Barnard Environmental Studies Magnet School in New Haven, Conneticut is Known as ”Green” school. which attracts 325 pre-school to sixth-students from all over the region（地区）who are interested in environmental studies.

Everything in the building is designed with the environment in mind. The lights 90oⅡwhen people leave the room. and special windows provide "passive light", cutting down on the need for electricity. When a window is 0pen. the air- conditioning automatically(自动地)turns off. Saving the energy is not all that students do lo help the environment. While learning about the dying salmon population in the Connecticut rivers, students also do something to help out -they feed salmon in fish tanks（水箱）in the classrooms. then let the adult salmon go into Connecticut rivers.

Composting（堆肥）is another part of taking care of the environment at Barnard. Students throw the remaining food into a composting bin in a greenhouse. The fertile（肥沃的）soil i5 used to help grow plants.
