What is GM food？Every kind of plant and animal has its own pattern of genes （基因模式）．?But scientists can add some genes into plants and animals and make them stronger．These are called GM plants and animals．
China has been growing GM cotton．We also buy GM soybeans （大豆），corns，oilseed rapes （油菜） and beets （甜菜） from other countries．China needs GM technology，said Wu Kong Ming from the Chinese Academy of Engineering．"China is not rich in land resources．Last year，China bought 80million tons of crops from other countries，"said Wu．Some GM crops produce more harvest or have better quality．Growing GM plants help farmers make the best use of the land．
But the safety of GM food is a controversial （有争议的） issue．Some scientists believe that the worries have no scientific grounds．Through studies，they suggest that GM food is safe for humans．But we don't know whether it has long-term health risks．People also complain that they don't know whether they are eating GM food or not．
