　　The first Engilsh window was just a slit (裂缝) in the wall. It was cut long. So that it would let wind in as much as possible, and narrow(狭的) to keep out the bad weather. However, the slit let in more wind than light. This is why it was called “the wind's eye”. The word window itself comes from two Old Norse words for wind and eye.

　　Before windows were used, the ancient (古代的) halls and castles (城堡)of northern Europe and Britain were dark and smoky. Their great rooms were high, with only a hole in the roof(屋顶) to let out the smoke from torches(火炬)and cooking fires .

　　The dinosaurs once lived happily on the earth．But 65 million years ago，they suddenly died out．What happened to them?

　　You will have a lot of reading to do in this grade this year．You can do more of it in less time if you learn to read rapidly．

　　Perhaps you have been told about some habits (习惯) which keep a person from reading fast and have been strongly asked to break those habits which you might have．

　　Long, long ago the Mouse King had a beautiful daughter. When she was old enough to be married, he called together the oldest and cleverest mice to talk about it.

　　“My daughter,” He said, “is far too beautiful to marry just anybody. I have decided to marry her to the greatest thing in the world. Now, who shall it be?”

　　“The sun,” the first mouse said at once, “is the greatest thing in the world. It shines over the whole world.”

　　“Well, then, I shall marry her to the sun,” said the Mouse King.

　　“But,” said the second, “a cloud can cover the sun.”

　　“Then, she must be married to the cloud.”

　　“But,” said the third, “the rain breaks through the clouds and puts an end to them.”
