What is the hottest English word of 2013? It’s “selfie”, according to Oxford dictionaries. Selfie is a photo that one takes of oneself, according to the Oxford online dictionary. People usually take selfies with a smartphone(智能手机) and send them to a social media website.
The word was first used in 2002. In the past 12 months, its frequency (出现频率) in the English language has increased by 17,000 percent, said Oxford dictionaries. Now, almost everybody knows it.
“Almost every day, I take a photo of myself at school, and save it in my Qzone (QQ空间),” said Huang Xu, 13, from Hunan. These photos record her happy and sad moments.
Pop stars also take a lot of selfies. Li Chunping, 14, from Harbin, is a big fan of Yang Mi. “She has used many selfies to tell us what’s going on in her personal life,” said Li.
What makes people love selfies? Some people say it’s narcissism (自恋). “The rise of the selfie is a perfect symbol for our narcissistic culture. We’re crying out: Look at me!” said US psychiatrist(精神科医生) Carole Lieberman.
Young people are using selfies to make friends online, Jonathan Freedland wrote in The Guardian. “The usual purpose of taking a selfie is to share online. They express a human need to connect with others,” wrote Freedland.
Huang Xu agrees with that. “During summer vacation, my classmates and I shared many selfies online. Hair or clothes were not our interests. Through these photos, we got to know each other’s holidays and feelings,” said Huang Xu.

Relex Company

Dear Sir or Madam:

A year ago I bought a Relex camera second hand. It’s a SW 705 model, and it’s about five years old. Here’s my problem: The light metre was fine when I bought the camera, but now it isn’t working and my pictures are coming out too dark. I checked the batteries, and they are still good. I took the camera to some repair shops, but they said they couldn’t repair it because the model is too old and they don’t have the necessary part.

Do you have the parts for this model in stock? If so, could I send you the camera for repairs? How much would the repairs cost? I’m going to buy your new SW800 model in about six months, but I would still like to fix this old one.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely yours

Sarah H, McDaniel

I was offered several part-time jobs at university. Finally I decided to give one of them a go. Now I work in a dining hall on campus(校园). My main duties are to serve food and wash dishes.

I discovered I would have to stand still for at least three hours at a time and was afraid it was not going to be as much fun as I had thought. Smiling all the time and remembering all the strange food names have been a challenge(挑战), too.

I have had really funny experiences. One of the sauces is called "marinara" which is a kind of tomato-based sauce like salsa(辣茄酱). Before I knew what it was, someone asked me to give him the sauce, and I replied: "What? The marijuana(大麻) sauce?" He was astonished. Marijuana is an illegal(非法的 ) drug and has nothing to do with sauce. It was quite embarrassing(使人尴尬的)! I have never forgotten the word "marinara" since then.

I also had to make a wrap(卷饼) for the first time. I had tasted Mexican wraps many times in China, but making one was a different matter. I could feel my face was burning with sweat and embarrassment as I broke the thin wraps again and again while people were waiting impatiently. Mexican wraps taste great when they're soft, but I do wish they could be made thicker and harder so they wouldn't break so easily.

My favorite part of the job is working in the kitchen. I hold the water cannon(水枪) like a policeman about to fight with "criminals” ----the dirty dishes. It's quite exciting to feel the water rushing out of the pipe. I usually get thoroughly(彻底地) soaked, but it feels good, a bit like taking a shower. Sometimes our boss allows us to play music to cheer us up. I often hum along to the music while washing dishes.

This is my first experience of being a student worker. It is hard work, but it's turning out to be quite fun.
