题目内容
A grown—up person has ten or eleven pints(品脱) of blood inside his or her body. We can lose a pint of blood without feeling anything, but if we lose too much blood, we feel weak and cold. Our faces become pale. We may die. This is what often happens when somebody is hurt in an accident, or a soldier is hurt in a war. Many people used to die in this way. But today they can be taken to a hospital and given more blood. Almost at once they feel better. Their faces are no longer pale. They can’t die.
Where does this blood come from? People who are healthy may donate(捐赠) blood to a blood bank so that it can be used to save people’s lives. When they go to donate blood, a special kind of needle(针) is put into the arm. It does not hurt. The blood runs through the needle and through a rubber tube into a bottle or a bag. A pint of blood is taken this way. The person who has given blood drinks a cup of tea or coffee and rests for a few minutes. Then he feels quite well. And he may give his blood this way three months later.
A person who gives blood feels happy, because he knows that his blood will be used to save someone’s life. Perhaps one day he himself will need blood.
When you are older, you may give blood, too. But you can’t do this until you are eighteen.

Conflicts(矛盾)go between parents and children. It's hard to tell who are right and who are wrong. A child of 7-8 always finds some reasons to have a conflict with it's parents. Whether it is about some toy, studies, a party or a company, there is always a difference between them. And it becomes worse when they answer you back. Scientists tell us that children should be treated with care. Yes, sure they should respect their elders.
We are partly responsible(有责任的)for this. At an early age we encourage children to behave like adults, just because we find it funny. The kids on the other hand consider this same behavior as normal and get used to it. And when it is not funny for us any more, we expect them to stop it, but by then it is already too late. Only when they reach a certain maturity will the children realize that answering back and being rude are not acceptable(可接受的).Until then, most of the time their behavior is difficult to change, unless by force(暴力).And use of force is against the every good idea, as it weakens the child's confidence.
So it is one thing to bring a child into this world but quite another to make them into well mannered citizens. The best way is to be a good example ourselves, as our children are the mirrors of us adults.

How often one hears children wishing they were grown-ups, and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains(痛苦), and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets(后悔).
Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities(责任) to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. What’s more, life is always giving new things to the child--- things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is repeatedly being told not do something or being punished for what he has wrongly done.
When a young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society(社会) as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he worked hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the greatest happiness of building up for himself his own position(地位) in society.
