Barnard Environmental Studies Magnet School in New Haven, Conneticut is Known as ”Green” school. which attracts 325 pre-school to sixth-students from all over the region(地区)who are interested in environmental studies.

Everything in the building is designed with the environment in mind. The lights 90oⅡwhen people leave the room. and special windows provide "passive light", cutting down on the need for electricity. When a window is 0pen. the air- conditioning automatically(自动地)turns off. Saving the energy is not all that students do lo help the environment. While learning about the dying salmon population in the Connecticut rivers, students also do something to help out -they feed salmon in fish tanks(水箱)in the classrooms. then let the adult salmon go into Connecticut rivers.

Composting(堆肥)is another part of taking care of the environment at Barnard. Students throw the remaining food into a composting bin in a greenhouse. The fertile(肥沃的)soil i5 used to help grow plants. At Barnard, almost everything has to do with the environment. Students sing songs about the environment; their artwork has to do the environment; even their math classes are focused(聚焦)on protecting the environment. “When I grow up.1 want to be a scientist. Because I want to study all kinds of animals and see how they live.”said lO-year-old Crystal.

Another student.Troi.11,has similar ambitions(抱负)."When I grow up I want to be a researcher, like a person who discovers different kinds of plants and animals, sort of like that,” he said.

Barnard offers opportunities students wouldn't get in a regular school. The school's goal is to teach kids to be good environmental role models. They also learn a different way to live. To attend the school. students have to express their interest in protecting the environment. "Students come here because they care about the environment.”said Drucker, a teacher at the school.
