Two girls, one older and the other younger, became close friends as a result of the same misfortune they met with--a fire made them lose their homes and their mothers. Both of them were disfigured and had several operations on their faces, yet they said they were fortunate enough to be alive.

Girl Athe older one, returning from the hospital's ICU to her bed, was scared and almost passed out at the first looking like a ghost, as she saw herself reflected by the stainless steel railings around her bed. She said "I met a ghost on the railing. How horrible! I was really terrified, but I didn't collapse(崩溃)completely. When is it that one feels grateful for his or her survival? It must be now like this. Thank goodness! I am still alive."

The first phone call that Girl A gave to Girl Bthe younger oneraised a question: "Do you know why I am so glad?" She gave the answer without waiting for a reply, "Because when I got hold of a loop(吊圈)on a bar in the bus to make myself stand like others, I felt very happy that I had a pair of hands."

Girl B's words were also very moving. She replied, "Hey, you know, don't be surprised by what I'm going to say. It was true. Let me ask you first. Do I look pretty? No, of course not. But before 11 years old I was pretty. I had snow-white skin, big eyes and a round face. I was also a wild kid. I think I'd grow up naughty if I was not properly educated. I would fall in love with other boys and become a bad girl, if I hadn't met the disaster. I disliked going to school. I'd prefer playing all day long. If there were not such a fire, I wouldn't have had chances of meeting so many kind strangers that help me to realize how wonderful life is. If there were not such an accident, I would grow into a beautiful lady. But now I am more considerate, grateful, hard-working and independent of others. Such a person as I am today will always be pretty all my life."

We never know what is waiting for us ahead. Yet, we still have the right to choose a positive attitude to face it.

根据前面的句子“-a fire made them lose their homes and their mothers. 以及“disfigured”所在句子的后半部分“and had several operations on their faces”脸上做了几次手术。

根据第二段中的句子“Girl A (the older one ), returning from the hospitals ICU to her bed, was scared and almost passed out at the first looking like a ghost, as she saw herself reflected by the stainless steel railings around her bed.” 故选A

根据第二段中的句子“I was really terrified, but I didnt collapse(崩溃) completely.” Id prefer playing all day long. If there were not such a fire, I wouldnt have had chances of meeting so many kind strangers that help me to realize how wonderful life is.”

A terrible Fire可怕的火灾;Two Terrified Girls两个惊恐的女孩;Rise from the Fire从火灾中振作起来。

Communication is important for strong family relationships. However, if you don't truly listen to others, it can be difficult to communicate. Working on the following listening skills can help you communicate better.

Listening Actively

Focus on the speaker's words and not what you'll say next. When listening to a family member, pay attention to what's being said. When talking to someone, pay attention to the speaker and his thoughts, you can think of how you will reply later.

Make sure the speaker has finished talking before you talk. Instead of starting your reply at once, a couple of seconds of silence is not a bad thing.

Communicating Effectively (有效的)

Retell what has been said. Try to briefly conclude what you have heard when the speaker finishes. It will really show you're listening and allow you and your family to communicate better.

Reflect (思考,回顾) on what's been said. After talking, reflect briefly on the subject. Try to work out not just what's being said, but also why it is important.

Accept you don't always have to solve someone's problems.

Avoiding Negative Habits

Do not cut in on others. Interrupting (打断) can break effective conversation. Do not start talking until the other person has finished.

Stop from offering advice. Unless you are asked, do not offer advice. Offering advice can make it seem like you're not really listening but to hear what you want.

Do not change the subject early. Never change the subject before the speaker has got their words out, even if a subject makes you bored.

Avoid hurrying the speaker. Never say words like, "Can you get to the point?" This will make it seem like you're not interested in the conversation.

Dear Aunt Carla,

I'm having a problem with my classmate, Joan, at school. The other day I wrote an email to another classmate, Beth, in which I said something about Joan that perhaps wasn't very nice. Unluckily, when Beth was writing back to me, she sent it to Joan@163.com, which is Joan's email address! Now Joan is really angry with me and won't talk to me, and Beth is unhappy as well. She has said sorry to me a hundred times already, but the harm is done. I feel bad, because I would never have said those things to Joan's face, but how do I get her to forgive me? What should I do?

Dear Steve,

This problem is more common than you might think! Email is very useful, but also very dangerous, as you don't know where your message might end up! First of all, you should say sorry right away to Joan. Explain that it was a mistake, and that you didn't mean to hurt her feelings. It may take time for her to be able to forgive you, but that's up to her. Then you might want to do something nice for her. Perhaps send her some flowers to show that you're truly sorry. Also, you should remember that old saying: "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." And good luck!
