My Big Day

There were about 15 kids there for audition(试镜)when we arrived. I had been u1 about being late on this Big Day but the bus, which moved slowly all the way, woke up and almost galloped for the last half mile. Dad and I jumped off and ran to 171 High Street. I had e2 a shiny building but what I saw was a broken ancient door. And the room into which we all crowded was dark and didn’t have enough chairs. A boy was p3 his audition piece loudly, unaware of everyone else in the room. Most of the kids were in jeans, but a few dressed seriously cool as if they spent every day on film sets and lunching with s4 . I felt a bit embarrassed about my dressing.

A girl called us away, one by one, to be auditioned. I breathed deeply and slowly as I had learned to do-ever since my first part in the school play, when I was extremely nervous and n5 forgot everything I had memorized. I repeated my speech to myself with all the pauses and emphasizes in the right places. I knew I was good. I really wanted this part, I wanted to pay Dad back for all the work he’d done for me. I wanted to make him proud of me. And I know I could do it.

Suddenly - there it was my n6 ! I followed the girl down a corridor into a large room with three men and a woman sitting behind a long table. The woman looked up and said hello. Then the middle man looked up and stared hard at me.

"How tall are you?" he asked.

“I’m 1.6 metres.” I said, trembling slightly.

The man looked at the woman and I saw him s7 his head.

The woman turned to me and said. “I’m so sorry. That’s just a bit too tall for this part. They should have told you”

in silence安静地。

I repeated my speech to myself with all the pauses and emphasizes in the right places可知,我从没忘记我所记的东西,故填never

I followed the girl down a corridor into a large room with three men and a woman sitting behind a long table可知,我去试镜,所以出现了我的名字,我跟着女孩穿过走廊,进了一个房间,故填name

The woman turned to me and said. Im so sorry. Thats just a bit too tall for this part. They should have told you”可知,我没有被录取,所以这个男人摇摇头,shake摇晃,且根据see sb doing“看到某人正在做某事”可知,故填shaking

Is there a connection between music and language? According to recent studies, the answer is yes:1Here, we look at two examples

A recent study by researcher Kraus shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person's hearing ability.2The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly.

3Think about violinists in an orchestra When the violinists play with the group, they hear their own instrument and many others, too. But the violinists must listen closely to what they are playing, and pay no attention to the other sounds. In this way, musicians are able to focus on certain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.

Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke (中风) patients. Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information normally. However, they can still sing.4Why does this work? Schlaug isn't sure. Music seems to make different parts of the brain work, including the damaged (损坏的) parts. This might help patients to use that part of the brain again.

Music improves concentration (注意力), memory, listening skills, and our overall language abilities.5Playing an instrument or singing can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp (敏锐的)as we get older. Music is not only enjoyable, it's also good for us in many other ways.

A. It can even help sick people get better.

B. Schlaug was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to speak.

C. Music improves certain language abilities in the brain.

D. In his study two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room.

E Musicians hear better because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds.
