For an Olympic gold medalist(金牌得主), what is the difference between the first gold and the second one? Zhou Yang knows the answer.

On Feb 15, the 22-year-old short track speed skater(短道速滑运动员)successfully kept her 1,500m Olympic gold at the Sochi Winter Games. Four years ago at Vancouver(温哥华), Zhou won her first Olympic gold in the same race. After the first gold, the excited Zhou thanked her parents in front of TV cameras. But her words caused criticism(批评)from some officials because she didn’t thank her country. More criticism followed. It was too much for the then 18-year-old Zhou. She started to suffer from depression(抑郁症)and could eat only two pieces of bread every day. In 2011, she left the national team.

It was not until the end of 2012 that Zhou finally came back. She made great progress after her return. She ranked(排名)21st in the 1,500m at the World Cup last season and has now risen to third place this season. “I went through a lot in the four years and I had thought about giving up,” Zhou said. “But I really love skating so I came back.”

“The two gold medals are so different to me,” she said. “The first gold was like a dream come true, and this one, after four years, is the reward of my efforts and not giving up.”
