【题目】If you want to become a better reader, what should you know about speed of reading?

Some people read very rapidly, while others read very slowly. But which one is better?

The rapid reader may be a good reader when he reads a storybook for fun. But he may not be able to slow down enough to read directions carefully. He may read so rapidly that he does not take time to understand fully the ideas and information which are important to remember.

The slow reader may be a good reader when he reads directions for making something. But he may spend too much time in reading a simple story which is meant to be enjoyed but is not important enough to be remembered.

So, you see, either a rapid reader or a slow reader is not really a good one. If you wish to become a better reader, here are four important things to remember about speed of reading.

(1). Knowing why you are reading will often help you to know whether to read rapidly or slowly.

(2). Some things should be read slowly throughout. Examples are directions for making or doing something, science and history books, and Maths problems. You must read such things slowly or remember each important step and understand each important idea.

(3).Some things should be read rapidly throughout. Examples are simple stories for enjoyment, letters from friends and bits of news from hometown papers.

(4). In some of your reading, you must change your speed from fast to slow and slow to fast, as you go along. You will need to read certain pages rapidly and then slow down and do more careful reading when you come to important ideas.

1What should be read rapidly?

A. Directions for making something. B. Maths problems.

【题目】During my stay at an orphanage (孤儿院) at the age of 9, a gentleman came and taught us how to do wooden art pieces.

I remember my first project—a small table. I was so proud of it that I regarded it as a wonder. It was beautiful and it took me six weeks to finish it. I could hardly wait to give it to Mother Winters as a gift. She was always strict with us.

As the tables were not dry from the clear coating, the man told us to wait a few days before taking them to our dormitories(寝室). But I was just so happy that I couldn’t wait to carry my table back, smiling from ear to ear.

When I reached the dormitory, I placed the little table beside my bed. When Mother Winters entered, I was admiring it.

“Were you supposed to bring this home?” she asked.

“No, ma’am,” I replied with my head down.

She ordered me to throw the table out and so I did. After she left, I immediately opened the door to get it back. It was dirty all over. I brushed it and cried, but the dirt would not come off. I hid the table in my closet. However, a year later during a cleaning-up, it was discovered. Painfully, I had to give the table to Mother Winters, thinking that she would throw it away.

Thirty years later at a party, I learned that Mother Winters was living nearby, so I drove up to see her. We talked cheerfully for long. As I was about to leave, she asked me to come down to her basement(地下室) to get something important. I followed her into a dark corner. She picked something up. As she turned around, I could see that she was holding a little table.

Mother Winters kept the little table that I had given up for lost so long ago.

Today, I look at that table with bittersweet memories but full of thanks to Mother Winters, who kept the table for a young orphan who valued it so much.

A. exciting B. worrying C. thankful D. painful

2Why did Mother Winters order the writer to throw the table out?

A. Because the table was dirty.

B. Because the writer broke the rule.

C. Because she didn’t like the table.

D. Because she didn’t like the writer.

3Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. It took the writer seven weeks to finish the small table.

B. The writer cried before she got her small table back.

C. The writer hid the table in her closet for many years.

D. Mother Winters kept the small table for a long time.
