African elephants are the largest animals on land. They are larger than their Asian cousins and can be identified (被识别) by their larger ears that look somewhat like the continent (洲,大陆) of Africa, while Asian elephants have smaller, rounded ears.![]()
At birth, elephants already weigh some 200 pounds (about 91 kilograms) and stand about 3 feet (about 1 meter) tall. Elephants eat roots, grasvses, fruit, and barks. An adult elephant can eat up to 300 pounds (about 136 kilograms) of food in a day.
African elephants have large ears to help them keep cool in the hot Africa. They are fond of water and enjoy showering by sucking water into their trunks and spraying (喷,洒) it all over themselves.
An elephant s trunk is actually a long nose used for smelling, breathing, drinking, and also for grabbing things. African elephants have two fingerlike features on the end of their trunks that they can use to grab small things.
African elephants have tusks (长牙) . They use them to dig for food and water and strip barks from trees. Because ivory (乳白色的象牙) is so valuable to some humans, many elephants have been killed for their tusks. African elephants are in great danger.
