　　A young man and an old man were waiting for a train at a station. They sat next to each other.“What's that in your bag?”asked the young man ,pointing to a big bag beside the man .“Gold , nothing but gold ,”answered the old man. The young man could hardly believe his own eyes.“What?”he said to himself in surprise.“So much gold? My God! How I wish to be able to get so much gold.

　　The old man looked tired and sleepy and it seemed that he could hardly to keep his eyes open.“Are you sleepy, sir?”asked the young man.“Then you'd better lie down on the chair and have a good rest. Don't worry about the train. I'll wake you up in time.”“All right. It's very kind of you, Young man.”The old man lay down and before long he fell asleep .The young man took the big bag gently(轻轻的). But when he was about to run away ,he found a corner of his fur coat(皮大衣)was under the old man's body .Several times he tried to pull it out ,but he couldn't. At last he took off his coat he went away with the bag.

　　The young man ran out of the station as quickly as his legs could carry him. When be reached a place where he thought the old man couldn't find him, he stopped and quickly opened the bag .To his surprise. these was nothing but a lot of small stones. There was no gold in it. He hurried to the station at once. But when he got there ,he found the old man was gone.

　　Most dictionaries will tell you a lot of things about a language. There are three important things. These three things are spelling, pronunciation(发音) and meanings. First, a dictionary will tell you the spelling of a word. If you are not sure about the spelling of a word, you can try to find the correct spelling in a dictionary. Words are listed in alphabetical order(按字母顺序)－a, b, c and so on. For example, on a dictionary page the word “poor” p, o, o, r－comes before “poverty” －p, o, v, e, r, t, y－and the word “poverty” comes before the word “power” －p, o, w, e, r. The words are always given in alphabetical order.

　　The second thing, a dictionary will tell you how a word is pronounced. There are a few different pronunciations. Most dictionaries give phonetic (语音的), or sound alphabet. The phonetic spelling will tell different phonetic alphabets. Many dictionaries use the International phonetic alphabet(国际音际) to show pronunciation.

　　The third thing, a dictionary will tell you the meanings of words. You can look up a word and find out what it means. Many words have more than one meaning, and a good dictionary also tell you all of the word's meanings. For example, in English the word “get” has over 20 different meanings.
