Youth, friendship and love are the main themes of these years’ Chinese movies, such as So Young (《致青春》) and American Dreams in China (《中国合伙人》). Tiny Times (《小时代》), one of the most popular movies in 2013, also has the same features(特征).

The movie was based on writer and director Guo Jingming’s novel of the same name. It tells a story about four girls who come from different backgrounds and of different personalities.

Since its release(发行) on June 27, Tiny Times has made 483 million yuan at the box office. The sequel (续集) of it was released on Aug 8 and it has also been a big box office hit.?

Cao Yuhan, 13, a high school student at Beijing Jianhua Experimental School, is a big fan of the movie. “I’m deeply touched by their friendship,” Cao said. “When Nan Xiang is in trouble, the other three girls try their best to help her, even running barefoot in the snow.”

However, not everyone has had good things to say. The People’s Daily said that the film went too far in encouraging youths to become materialistic (物质至上主义的).

Film commentator(评论员) Raymond Zhou wrote on his online blog that “Purchasing luxury goods (买奢侈品) seems as a way to express love or friendship, and the word ‘money’ is repeated over and over again.”

Song Kexin, 14, a high school student at Zhida Middle School in Taiyuan, Shanxi, shows a typical example of a fan’s attitude. And that’s to look for the positive(积极的) value. “The movie is a little far from our daily life. One year, a college in the United States announced that it would offer a lot of money for the pure white marigold(金盏花). The high reward attracted so many people, but in the nature, besides golden, the marigold is brown, and it is not easy to get the white one. So after they were excited for a time, many people had forgotten the announcement.

One normal day after 20 years, the college received a letter and 100 seeds of pure white marigold. It was an old woman of over 70 years old. Some experts in the college doubted it, but in order not to let her down, those seeds finally took root (根）in the earth. The miracle appeared after one year; the field was covered by pure white marigold.

Most of us have never thought about building an educational toy by ourselves. If we need a learning toy or something, we simply go to the nearest store and buy it. However, things are not as easy in third world countries. With families even having no food to put on the table, buying toys, especially the educational ones, is the last thing on the parents’ minds.

So how can one get these kids interested in science? This was a question that worried the Indian engineer Arvind Gupta so much that he decided to leave his job and spend his life making toys from things that people no longer want or need!

Mr. Gupta began teaching in the 1970s. While still an engineering student at the Indian College of Technology, he volunteered to teach the children who could not afford to go to school. After his graduation, he found a good job at India’s Tata Motors and spent the next five years designing cars.

But he soon realized that this was not something he wanted to do for the rest of his life. So he took a year’s training course and took part in the Hoshangabad Science Teaching Program whose aim was to make science fun and exciting for poor children using common materials.

Mr. Gupta found the whole project so intereting that he decided to leave his high-paying job and pay his attention to designing educational toys that were not only cheap and easy to build, but are also full of scientific principles(科学原理), so that children could get interested in this interesting subject.

When the Internet started becoming a more widespread learning tool, Mr. Gupta created a Toys from Trash website and also recorded over 250 YouTube videos.

Today, over 50,000 children and teachers visit the website daily to download the videos for the toy creations developed from cool science. Some young children have become so inspired (鼓舞)that they have even won international science competitions with the help of his creations.
