Each nation has many good people who help to take care of others. For example, some high school and college students in the United States often spend many hours as volunteers in hospitals, orphanages (孤儿院) or homes for the old. They read books to the people in these places, or they just visit them and play games with them or listen to their problems.

Other volunteers go and work in the homes of people who are sick or old. They paint, clean up, or repair their houses, do their shopping or mow (修整) their lawns (草坪).For boys who no longer have fathers there is an organization called Big Brothers. College students and other men take these boys to baseball games or on fishing trips and help them to get to know things that boys usually learn from their fathers.

Each city has a number of clubs where boys and girls can go to play games or learn crafts. Some of these clubs show movies or organize short trips to the mountains, beaches, museums or other places of interest. Most of these clubs use a lot of high school and college students as volunteers because they are young enough to remember the problems of younger boys and girls.

Volunteers believe that some of the happiest people in the world are those who help to bring happiness to others.

Our class had a weekly class meeting this afternoon. We talked about how to deal with the unhappy things. Here are the stories some students told.

Li Ming: Yesterday my friend Jim went to school without his homework. He told the teacher that he couldn’t do it. It was just an excuse! In fact, he didn’t do his homework. It made his teacher disappointed. He made Jim stay to finish his homework after school. As a student, I think we should study hard.

Chen Yan: Last week Lucy got angry when her friends sang together while she was trying to work. I think she needs to control her feelings and stop getting angry so easily. Getting angry with people may cause her to lose friends. It is very important for us to get along well with (与……友好相处) others.

Wen Jie: A big earthquake (地震) hit Ya’an, Sichuan on April 20th. The terrible earthquake made many people die. Thousands of people lost their houses. They needed lots of food, water, medicine and so on. They felt sad. I think we must try our best to help them when people are in trouble.
