Louis Cha Leung-yung, one of the greatest Chinese wuxia fiction writers, passed away on October 30, 2018, at the age of 94. Better known by his pen name Jin Yong, Cha built a fantastic wuxia world and created different types of heroes admired by a large number of fans.

It is said that where there are Chinse-speaking communities, there are people reading Jin Yong’s books.

In 1950, Cha, a newspaper reporter, met and worked together with Chen Wentong, who wrote wuxia stories under the pen name of Liang Yusheng. Encouraged by Chen, Cha began to publish his first novel five years later. Then he set up daily newspaper Ming Pao with Shen Baoxin in 1959, where he published some of his following works. Today, Ming Pao becomes one of the most important newspapers in Hong Kong which influences the society and people’s life.

From 1955 to 1972, Cha wrote 14 novels and one short story of wuxia. The interest and taste of readers have been changing, but his books continue to be attractive. His works have been adapted into films and TV series for many times, such as The Return of the Condor Heroes(《神雕侠侣》).

No matter how smart and strong Cha’s heroes appear, they are not perfect and make mistakes from time to time, just like all of us in real life. What makes someone a hero is the courage and ability to make decisions and devote themselves to their communities. The kung fu masters in the books are loyal to friends and family while brave enough to die for their homeland if needed.

The purpose of Cha in writing novels is to show traditional values and qualities. “Traditional values are shown through the characters and their stories, not by talking to readers,” Cha once said.

What’s the most important thing for you to have in your life? Somebody thinks it’s hard work, others think it’s knowledge, love and luck.

If you arrange(排列) the 26 English letters in order and use numbers to represent (代表)each of them, for example, 1 for a, 2 for b, 3 for c ……26 for z, you can change an English word into a number. So hard work becomes 8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11=98, 98 is its mark; knowledge:11+14+15+23+12+5+4+7+5=96; love: 12+15+22+5=54, and luck: 12+21+3+11=47, a small mark. None of these words can give one a full mark( 满分). What about money? It can’t, either.

Then what else? Don’t be worried. You can always find an answer to a problem in your life, when you change your way of looking at things or doing things, or your attitude(态度). Yes, attitude is the word. See for yourself; attitude: 1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5=100, a full mark.

Different attitudes lead to(导致) different courses of life. Most time people hope for a better life. It is possible that they will have a better life if they change their attitudes. When you change and become friendly towards others, you will meet more smiling faces towards you. In the same way, if you take a positive(积极的) attitude towards problems, they may bring you good things.
