1didn’t pay

2How long

3is he

4been done

5instead going

6satisfy requirements/demands

7It seems owning a car has both advantages and disadvantages

(1). didn’t (2). pay

(1). How (2). long

代指John用代词he,前半句的助动词是is,后半句用 (1). is (2). he

4主语many things与谓语do之间是被动关系,用被动语态,根据have此处是现在完成时被动语态have been done。此处为(1). been (2). done

5Susan didn't go to school yesterday. She stayed in hospital. (1). instead (2). going

6meet=satisfy满足,needs=requirements=demands需要,故此处为(1). satisfy (2). requirements/demands

7It seems+从句,表示似乎……both advantages and disadvantages优点和缺点。 It seems owning a car has both advantages and disadvantages

Do you know what makes you happy or do you just think you know? At firstthese two questions look the same. If you think something makes you happythen it makes you happy. You know yourself, don't you?

Write a list of all the things that make you happy. How many of them are fun? Most of them?

Soif you spend your time doing all these fun thingsyou'll be really bappy, won't you?

Wellmaybe not. For most peoplefun isn't enough for real happiness. Paul Dolan wrote a book called Happiness by DesignHe thinks happiness comes from both pleasure and purpose. If most of the things on your list are about pleasurethat is what you think makes you happy. But you also need activities with purpose.

We usually know if something is funbut we don't know what brings meaning. We can try to find purpose in it. Some activities might be motivating because they work for the good of people and the world around us. Or what you do might help a team you're working in.

If you're a studentyour‘job' is studying and passing exams. It's easy to do well in subjects you likebut subjects you don't like are less motivating. They're not fun for youbut you have to study them so you need to find purpose. An A in a subject you hate won't help the world. But can you be part of a study team with friends? Each person can study one part until they understand it and then teach it to the rest of the group. The purpose becomes helping the team.

Go back to your list of things that make you happy. How many of them are activities that bring purpose? Can you add any? Remembersome activities might bring both pleasure and purpose.

Now you need to design a happy life. Paul Dolan believes people should‘decidedesigndo'.

First decide what brings you pleasure and/or purpose-that means your two lists. Thendon't just think about these activitiesfill your life with them. For exampleyou might love riding a bike but never have time to do it. Soride to school or the library or the shops. If you live too far awaytake your bike on the bus or train. Get off early and ride the rest of the way.

Some parts of our lives are good or bad luckbut we can still design the rest to make more happiness.
