题目内容
20.Mumbai in Western India is the world's third largest city with a population of about 25million people. This huge population increases by about 215families a day coming in from the countryside.Mumbai is a great city with some lovely hotels, shops and restaurants,a lot of businesses and factories and some pleasant suburbs (郊区),but it also has some areas where life is difficult.Dharavi is a part of the city where poor people arriving in the city often go.There are crowds of people everywhere. Many people live on the street. There are no flats. The best you can get is a hut built out of boxes and pieces of wood. There are no toilets and there is rubbish everywhere as no one collects it.There are black birds, called crows, all around. They are not very nice, but they do eat a lot of the rubbish.Mumbai has a lot of rain and there are lakes in the mountains for water, but people have to walk every day to public taps to get water and carry it back home. The water is definitely not safe to drink. The people of Dharavi, however, work hard. There are shops and businesses everywhere and you can hear plenty of success stories.
The traffic in Mumbai is so bad that it can take you an hour to move a few blocks.Animals walk in the streets among the cars and vans.Everyone is late for appointments (约会).The city has a lot of trains. They carry hundreds of thousands of people every day.People sit on top of the trains and hold onto the sides.
If you visit, you must take care as there are a lot of crimes. The police cannot do much to stop the crimes or catch the law-breakers as there are not enough of them.
Another very serious problem is air pollution.Cars are responsible (负责) for a lot of it,but home cooking fires also add to it.
Farmers must be persuaded to stay in the countryside; otherwise Mumbai will go on growing and life will become more unpleasant and unsafe.
