An English Christmas dinner has a meal of turkey. Germans celebrate Christmas with bread, cookies and cakes. It is made like a Christmas tree.
In the south of India, there is a three-day festival in mid-January called Pongal. It has rice and a dish o f rice cooked with sugar.
Japan celebrates the New Year with a seven-day festival. It begins from January 1st. They cook food before the festival so people don't need to cook during the festival, On New Year's Day, people can have different dishes ——each dish is a wish for the New Year.
People in China get their food ready ahead of time(提前). They don't want to use a knife during New Year's time because they think it might "cut luck". Foods with lucky names are popular, such as fish. It sounds like "surplus(余)".
