7、A certain hunter had found a piece of forest by chance .It was a wonderful place and there were plenty of animals to hunt there .The only trouble was that the place was very difficult to get to .

He returned from his first visit to the place in late autumn, and could not get back until the snow melted in the following spring .Then he went to the pilot of a small plane, who earned his living by carrying hunters to parts of the country where there were no roads and no railways ,and asked him to take him back to his favorite piece of forest.

The pilot did not know the place, so the hunter showed it to him on the map. “But there is nowhere to land there, man!” said the pilot , “I have flown over that part of the country on my way to other places ,and I know that we can’t land anywhere between this river and these mountains”. “I thought you were a wonderful pilot,” said the hunter, “some of my friends said you could land a plane on a postage stamp.” “That’s right,” answered the pilot, “I can land a plane where nobody else can. But I tell you there is nowhere to land in the place you are talking about.” “And what if I tell you that another pilot did land me there last spring?” “Is that true?” asked the pilot. “Yes, it is. I swear(发誓)it.”

Well, this pilot could not let himself be beaten by another, so he agreed to take the hunter.

When they reached the place, the hunter pointed out a small spot without trees in the middle of the forest ,with a steep(悬崖)rise at one end . The pilot thought that there was not enough room to land there, but the hunter said that the other pilot had done so the year before, so down went the plane. When it came to the rise, it turned right over onto its back. As the hunter climbed out, he smiled happily and said, “Yes, that is exactly how the other pilot managed it last time.”

6、We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. “Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?” “When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?” When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it’s too late.

Why do we go wrong about our friends – or our enemies? Sometimes what people say nodes their real meaning. And if we don’t really listen, we will miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, “You are a lucky dog.” Is he really on your side? If he says, “You are a lucky guy” or “You are a lucky girl”, that’s being friendly. But “lucky dog?” There is a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn’t see it himself. But bringing in the word “dog” puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn’t think you deserve your luck.

“Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for” is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped(包,裹)up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn’t important. It’s telling you to think of all the starving(饥饿的)people in the world when you haven’t got a date for Saturday night.

How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person while talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone(语气,腔调)of voice? His posture? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake.

2.In the 1st paragraph the writer recalls(回忆)some things that may happen between some friends and they _________.

B.feel happy, thinking of how nice their friends were to them in the past

C.feel they may not have “read” their friends true feelings correctly

D.feel very sorry that their friends didn’t help them and let them down

3.While we are listening to a person, the important thing for us is __________.

A.to check his words against his manner, tone of voice and posture

B.to listen to how he pronounces his words in front of you

C.to notice his tone of voice, his posture and his clothes

D.not to believe what he says in any situation or at any time

4.According to this passage, the underlined phrase “puts you down” can be replaced by another phrase “________”.

A.makes you pleased                               B.makes you proud

C.makes you feel stupid                           D.makes you excited

5、It’s enough to give anyone an earache. Women spend an average of about five years on the phone during their working lives, as research has showed.

You won’t be surprised to learn that women spend a longer time than men on the phone.

Both sexes make and receive almost the same number of calls ---- 277,000 for men and 288,000 for women. But women spend 13,500 more hours in total on their conversations.

More than half of those chats are work-related but people spend on average twice as long on a personal call (ten minutes) as on a business one.

Despite the explosion in mobile phone ownership, most people still prefer to use landlines, the poll(民意调查)found.

However, when people are tired of talking, the top excuse for getting a caller off the line is to say “Someone’s at the door”. Other falsehoods(谎言)include “I’m cooking” and “I need to go to the toilet”.

Eight out of ten phone users admitted not answering their phones on purpose if they did not want to speak to the caller.

One in three people thought calls after 10 pm were unacceptable but a quarter of those polled said they did not mind calls up to midnight.

Two-thirds admitted they had people in their address books who they knew they should ring but never got round to doing so.

Joseph Blass, managing director of telecom(电信)company Toucan, said, “As a nation, we love to chat on the phone but it is quite astonishing when we look at the total number of calls we make in a lifetime”.

1.According to the poll, when someone on the phone says “Sorry, someone is at the door”, he or she may mean _________.

       A.I want to stop chatting

B.I am going to the toilet

C.I am too tired to talk any longer

D.I must go to open the door for someone

B.On average, work-related calls are only half as long as personal calls.

C.Women make and receive exactly the same number of calls as men do.

D.Men spend a longer time than women on the phone.

3.From the text, we know that _________.

A.80% of people always refuse to answer a phone call

B.most people never ring the people in their address books

C.calls around midnight are acceptable to some people

D.Joseph Blass was one of the people who were polled

4.What Joseph Blass says in the last paragraph shows that ________.

A.it’s no wonder that we all love to chat on the phone

B.people insist on often phoning their families and friends

C.the amount of time people spend on the phone was unexpected

D.The total number of calls people make in a lifetime is astonishing
