His name was David. He was carrying his books. As I was walking, I saw a group of kids running
towards him, knocking all his books out of his arms. And then they ran away. David fell down
and his glasses went flying. He looked up and I saw sadness in his eyes. I helped him to look for
his glasses and said, "The kids with bad manners should be punished. " There was a big smile that
showed real gratitude (感激) on his face.
From then on we became friends. The more I got to know David, the more I liked him. Over
the next four years, we always studied, played together and had a happy time.
On the graduation (毕业) day, I could see that he was nervous about his speech. So I said,
"Hey, you will be the best!" Then he began, "Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you
succeed through those difficult years. Our parents, our teachers, but mostly our friends. Being a
friend to someone is the best gift you can give them. I'll tell you a story ..." I just looked at the

at me and smiling that same thankful smile. Not until that moment did I realize its deep meaning.

It was their first visit to this part of the world. As my parents had to attend a cousin's wedding (堂兄的婚礼) , they asked me to take our two visitors around Singapore.
Early in the morning I took them round the island in a taxi. They enjoyed the trip down Nicoll Drive to Changi Beach. Later in the morning was stopped at the Tiger Balm Gardens, or Haw Par Villa as it is commonly called. They found the Gardens very interesting. I told them the history of the place and the Chinese legends (传奇) behind the figures of stone. The sun was hot and we soon became very thirsty. Thiry years ago, I walked into your bakery and asked for some loaves (条,块) of bread to sell. At that
time I was twelve years old. A young lady was working that day. She gave me five loaves and wished me
good luck. I took the loaves and went out to sell them.
It took me all day, but I sold them all. At the end of the day, I had some money. I was the happiest boy
in the world as I walked home that evening.
The next day, I went to a bicycle shop. I paid a deposit (定金) on a new bicycle. And then I started
my next job- as a newspaper delivery (递送) boy. Soon I could pay the rest of the money for the bicycle
and the bike was mine. I was so proud.
Today, I still work in the delivery business. I have a lot of trucks to send goods (货物) all over the
country. I live in a beautiful house, but I don't ride a bicycle these days. I drive a large and nice car.
