第二节:
(Text 6)
W: I feel very
excited to come to Beijing
to watch the Olympic Games! During these days I have some time left, where do
you recommend I should go besides the Great Wall?
M: Madam, do
you hear that there are four things you are absolutely supposed to do while in Beijing?
W: What are they?
M: One is
climbing the Great Wall, one is visiting the Summer Palace,
the others are eating Beijing Roast Duck and shopping in Xiushui
Market. Yesterday the US
late president George Bush with his family went shopping in Xiushui
Market, and bought seven silk pajamas.
W: Oh, Xiushui Market is well known. It’s also called Silk Street. Last
Thursday, Anne Rogge, wife of Jacques, the International Olympic Committee
president, bought several dresses there. I am supposed to order a silk dress.
How soon will it be sent to me?
M: Wang Zili, general manager of the Xiushui
Market said, the tailors’ ability to deliver clothes as quickly as eight hours
after taking an order is the main draw for shoppers. So it is efficient.
W: Okay. Good. And where is the famous Peking Duck restaurant?
M: You mean the Quanjude Restaurant?
W: Yes. That’s the one. Is it easy to find?
M: Yes, very easy. It’s on Qianmen Street.
W: It’s just south of Tian’anmen Square, isn’t it?
Okay, I will go there tomorrow.
(Text 7)
M: How come
David is always full of energy?
W: He has a
strange but highly effective way of sleeping.
M: What is that?
W: He takes a
short sleep for an hour every six hours and has a total of four hours of sleep
each day.
M: Where did he get that strange idea?
W: He read it
in a book which said it was the best way for human beings and he believes it.
M: How many hours do you sleep a day?
W: I need at
least seven hours. I tried to follow David’s example but it never worked for
me.
M: If I sleep during the day, I can never wake up.
W: Not everyone is the same as David, I guess.
Text 8
M: Aaaagh!
W: But I haven’t touched you. What are you shouting for?
M: You are going to touch me.
W: Well, of
course I am. How can I give you an injection without touching you? As soon as
you’ve had the injection, your gum will freeze and you won’t feel a thing.
M: How do I know what you will do while I am asleep? You might rob
me.
W: Now let’s
not be silly. You won’t go to sleep. We don’t do that nowadays. This will just
freeze the area around the tooth so that you will not feel any pain while I am
pulling out the tooth. That is all. You won’t go to sleep.
M: What can I do while you are working?
W: You can
watch everything I do in that mirror above you. Come along now.
Text 9
M: What’s troubling you, Juliet? You look upset.
W: I’m okay, but it’s all because of my father.
M: Your father? Did he treat you badly?
W: No, he is kind to me. I just worry about his health.
M: I know your father is always a strong man. What is wrong with
him?
W: He has got a bad cold, and coughs day and night.
M: Have you sent him to the doctor’s?
W: Yes, the
doctor said that heavy smoking caused his illness. If he keeps on like this, he
will catch colds more than now!
M: Yes,
smoking is really a bad habit. It does great harm to the health. Doesn’t he
know that?
W: He knows
this, but he says that he would rather die than give up smoking. Whenever my
mother talks about this with him, he gets angry. He just can’t control himself.
M: I know the relationship
between your father and you is quite gooD. I think he
will listen to you.
W: Will I try my best to advise him to give up gradually?
M: I hope you will succeed.
