F.The working manner of navigation computers

80.

Navigation computers, now sold by most car – makers, cost $ 2,000 and up. No surprise, then, that they are most often found in luxury cars, like Lexus, and Audi. But it is a developing technology – meaning prices should eventually drop market does seem. growing.

81.

Even at current prices, a navigation computer is impressive. It can guide you from point to point in most major cities with precise turn – by – turn directions spoken by a clear human – sounding voice, and written on a screen in front of the driver.

82.

The computer woks an antenna that takes signals from no fewer than three of the 24 global positioning system (GPS) satellites. By measuring the time required for a signal to travel between the satellites and the antenna, the car’s location can be pinned down within 200 meters.

83.

The satellite signals, along with inputs on speed from a wheel – speed sensor and direction from a meter, determine the car’s position even as it moves. This information is combined with a map database. Street, landmarks and points of interest are included.

84.

Most system are basically the same. The differences come in hardware – the way the computer accepts the driver’s request for directions and the way it presents the driving instructions. On most systems, a driver enters a desired address, motorway junction or point of interest by a torch screen or disc. But the Lexus screen goes a step further: you can point to any spot on the map screen and get directions to it.

As soon as it was revealed that a reporter for Progressive magazine had discovered how to make a hydrogen bomb, a group of firearm fans formed the National Hydrogen Bomb Association, and they are now lobbying against any legislation (立法) to stop Americans from owning one.

“The Constitution(宪法),” said the association’s spokesman, “gives everyone the right to own arms. It doesn’t spell out what kind of arms. But since anyone can now make a hydrogen bomb, the public should be able to buy it to protect themselves.”

“Don’t you think it’s dangerous to have one in the house, particularly where there are children around?”

“The National Hydrogen Bomb Association hopes to educate people in the safe handling of this type of weapon. We are instructing owners to keep the bomb in a locked cabinet and the fuse (导火索) separately in a drawer.”

“Some people consider the hydrogen bomb a very fatal weapon which could kill somebody.”

The spokesman said, “Hydrogen bombs don't kill people-people kill people. The bomb is for self protection and it also has a deterrent effect. If somebody knows you have a nuclear weapon in your house, they're going to think twice about breaking in.”

“But those who want to ban the bomb for American citizens claim that if you have one locked in the cabinet, with the fuse in a drawer, you would never be able to assemble it in time to stop an intruder.”

“Another argument against allowing people to own a bomb is that at the moment it is very expensive to build one. So what your association is backing is a program which would allow the middle and upper classes to acquire a bomb while poor people will be left defenseless with just handguns.”

B.can show the special status of its owners

C.will threaten the safety of the owners as well

D.can kill those entering others' houses by force

78.According to the passage, opponents of the private ownership of H-bombs are very much worried that .

A.the influence of the association is too powerful for common people to overcome

B.poorly-educated Americans will find it difficult to make use of the weapon

C.the wide use of the weapon will push up living expenses tremendously

D.the cost of the weapon will put citizens on an unequal basis

79.From the tone of the passage we know that the author is .

A.strongly doubtful about the necessity of keeping H-bombs at home for safety

For years, doctors advised their patients that the only thing taking multivitamins does is to give them extensive urine (尿). After all, true vitamin deficiencies (缺乏) are practically unheard of in industrialized countries. Now it seems those doctors may have been wrong. The results of a growing number of studies suggest that even a modest vitamin shortfall can be harmful to your health. Although proof of the benefits of multivitamins is still far from certain, the few dollars you spend on them is probably a good investment.

Or at least that’s the argument put forward in the New England Journal of Medicine. Ideally, say Dr. Walter Willett and Dr. Meir Stampfer of Harvard, all vitamin supplements would be evaluated in scientifically rigorous clinical trials. But those studies can take a long time and often raise more questions than they answer. At some point, while researchers work on figuring out where the truth lies, it just makes sense to say the potential benefit outweighs (超过) the cost.

Despite vitamin C’s great popularity, consuming large amounts of it still has not been positively linked to any great benefit. The body quickly becomes filled with C and simply excretes (排泄) any excess.

The multivitamins question boils down to this: Do you need to wait until all the evidence is in before you take them, or are you willing to accept that there’s enough evidence that they don’t hurt and could help? If the latter, there’s no need to go to extremes and buy the biggest horse pills or the most expensive bottles. Large doses can cause trouble, including excessive bleeding and nervous system problems.

Multivitamins are no substitute for exercise and a balanced diet, of course. As long as you understand that any potential benefit is modest and subject to further refinement, taking a daily multivitamin makes a lot of sense.

73.At one time doctors discouraged taking multivitamins because they believed that multivitamins

__ __.

A.could not easily be absorbed by the human body

B.were potentially harmful to people’s health

C.were too expensive for daily consumption

A.may bring about serious side effects

    B.may help prevent excessive bleeding

C.are likely to induce the blockage of arteries

D.are advisable for those with vitamin deficiencies

75.The author concludes the passage with the advice that___ _.

A.the benefit of daily multivitamin intake outweighs that of exercise and a balanced diet

B.it’s risky to take multivitamins without knowing their specific function

C.the potential benefit of multivitamins can never be overestimated

D.it’s reasonable to take a rational (合理的) dose of multivitamins daily

Two hours from the tall buildings of Manhattan and Philadelphia live – some of the world’s largest black bears. They are in Northern Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains, a home they share with an abundance of other wildlife.

The streams, lakes, meadows, mountain ridges and forests that make the Poconos an ideal place for black bears have attracted more people to the region. Open spaces are threatened by plans for housing estates and important habitats are endangered by highway construction . To protect the Pocono’s natural beauty from irresponsible development, the Nature Conservancy(大自然保护协会)named the area one of America’s “Last Great Places”.

Operating out of a century-old schoolhouse in the village of Long Pond , Pennsylvania, the conservancy’s head Cook is working with local people and business leaders to balance economic growth with environmental protection. By creating partnership with people like Francis Altemose , the Conservancy has been able to protect more than 14,000 acres of environmentally important land in the area .

Altemose’s family has farmed in the Pocono area for generations. Two years ago Francis worked with the conservancy to include his farm in a county farmland protection program . As a result, the family’s land can be protected from development and the Altemoses will be better able to provide a secure financial future for their 7-year-old grandson .

Cook attributes the Conservancy’s success in the Poconos to having a local presence and a commitment to working with local residents,

“The key to protecting these remarkable lands is connecting with the local community,” Cook said. “The people who live there respect the land.” They value quiet forests , clear streams and abundant wildlife . They are eager to help with conservation effort.

Growing up as an Asian in Britain is much more than a question of facing discrimination and trying to find a decent job – especially for a girl. She has to keep a delicate 40 between two cultures: her own and the British.

Seetha Crishna has written a booklet called Girls of Asian Origin in Britain. In it the girls she is most concerned with are those who are 41 different because they have gone through the British educational system and have therefore emerged with an 42 which is distinct from that of their parents.

They speak English with regional English accents, they look 43 in Western clothes, and they so not necessarily choose to work in a factory. But they are unmistakably Asian and they are still held by their Asian 44 roots. At home, Asian girl may find herself conforming to the traditions and values of her parents , while at school she tends to 45 the attitudes and appetites of her British contemporaries.

As a result , Seetha Crishna found girls existing at two levels-and inclined to 46 both. “But unless they can successfully accept both, they will 47 constantly from one level to the other, feeling trapped. between the two-at 48 cost to their own confidence and happiness,”

For teenage girls, the main 49 is to match the social life which their parents expect them to live with that enjoyed by their schoolmates.
