Americans : Restless ? Illiterate

Americans are queer people ; they can’t rest . They have more time , more leisure , shorter work hours , more holidays , and more vacations than any other people in the world . But they can’t rest . They rush up and down across their continent as tourists ; they move about in great herds to conventions (大会) ; they search the wilderness ; they flood the mountains ; they keep the hotels full .But they can’t rest . The scenery rushes past them . They learn it , Battles and monuments are announced to them on a tour bus . They hear them , but they don’t get them . They never stop moving ; they rush up and down as Shriners , Masons , Old Graduates , Bankers-they are a new thing each day , always rushing to a reunion or something . So they go on rushing about till eventually the undertaker (殡葬工) gather them to a last convention .

Americans are queer people ; they can’t read . They have more schools , and better schools and spend more money on schools and colleges than all Europe . But they can’t read . They print more books in a year than the French print in ten . But they can’t read . They cover their country with one hundred thousand tons of Sunday newspapers every week . But they don’t read them . They’re too busy . They use them for fires and to make more paper with . They buy eagerly thousands of new novels at two dollars each . But they read only page one . Their streets are full of huge signs . They won’t look at them . Their streetcars are filled with advertising ; they turn their eyes away . Transparent colors , cart wheels , and mechanical flares whirl and flicker in the crowded streets at night . No one sees them . Tons of letters pour into the mail boxes , trough the houses , and down the garbage cans . No one reads them

From a major Windows upgrade to more powerful Web services and high-definition (高清晰) DVD, there's a lot to look forward to in the coming year. New monitors, DVD players, computers and game systems, will blur (模糊) the border between computers and home appliances to finally create a digital centre in each modern house. Vista View Microsoft's next major operating system, Windows Vista, looks different from today's Windows. But the parts you can't see might be even more important. Microsoft is focusing on securing users from the viruses, worms, and other attacks that have become a serious problem in the last decade. But security isn't the only point of Windows Vista. It includes additional gaming features, a new desktop search function, a new user interface, compatibility (兼容) with high-definition TV and multimedia equipment. New DVD on the road The next DVD generation has two layers. First, high-definition recording will mean more vivid sound and pictures. It also means you might have to put aside your present DVD collection, as people did with tape cassettes in the 1980's when CD was introduced. The new technology will record high-definition TV programs on a small disk without quality loss. And up to 50 gigabytes of storage can put 13 hours of programs or eight movies on a disc. Wireless Connectivity Everywhere. Wi-Fi is coming. Despite the over publicity surrounding wireless networking, the fact remains that finding a public connection still takes work. Next year, connectivity should get easier, thanks to long-range broadband wireless technology from Intel called WiMax. According to an Intel spokesperson a WiMax signal "can carry 50 miles in tests, but in reality about half that." It means you can get online almost anywhere at any time. Next-Generation Game Consoles (控制台) Gamers, fasten your seat belts. 2006 will be a great year for consoles. Next year will be one of the most exciting with major releases from Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft. It's like an election: Every four years or so, gamers get to choose which platform they'll support for the next cycle. As you'd expect, the processing and graphics hardware powering the consoles is impressive. They'll include HDTV and high-speed Internet connectivity.

In the opinion of many Americans and Europeans,we begin to really explore our world only in the sixteenth century.According to them, the sailors of the ancient world did not explore distant parts of the world;they did not have the necessary knowledge or skills for long sea journeys. However, the people who have this opinion are forgetting two important facts of history.

First, sometimes early scientists have an idea which is correct, but scientists in later centuries do not believe it.For example, about 270 B.C.,a Greek scientist had an idea which we all believe today:The earth moves around the sun.But for the following 1,600 years scientists did not believe this.In their opinion, the sun clearly moved around the earth. They discovered the truth again only in the fifteenth century!

The second fact of history that many people forget is this:Ancient does not mean simple. For example, the ancient Egyptians knew a great deal about the stars;they used this knowledge to find their way across the oceans. Two thousand years ago a Greek scientist who lived in Egypt calculated the distance around the earth. The results of his calculations were close to the actual distance we know today! So the ancients had a great deal of scientific knowledge. They also had skills which equaled the skills of today。For example,l,300 years ago and before, fishermen in Ireland built their boats of wood and leather.Today some fishermen in Ireland still make boats of the Same design. They use tools and materials which are not very different from the tools and materials which their ancestors used. Why? The ancient design of the boats is good, and with skillful sailors. these boats can sail in all kinds of weather.

Clearly,1ong before the sixteenth century, people had the skills, the knowledge, and the equipment which were necessary for 1ong journeys by sea.The world did not have to wait until the sixteenth century for its first explorers?
