China Earthquake Leaves 5,000 homeless

　　　 Beijing-An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter sale left 5,000 people homeless, killed at least one person and injured 39 others in southwest China on Thursday, with accidents expected.

　　　 By late Thursday, 4,900 people were declared homeless after the quake destroyed their homes in a mountainous area lying on the border between Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. The dawn quake left one dead and 39 injured ,destroyed 268 houses and damaging 1,132 other buildings so seriously that they were considered uninhabitable.

　　　 Another 2,400 houses suffered less serious damage .The epicenter(震中)was near the scenic Lugu lake ,a tourist site ,where the local school was severely damaged.

　　　 Preliminary(最初的)estimates put economic losses at 180 million yuan(22 million dollars).

　　　 Governments in Yanyuan and the neighbouring Yunnan country of Ningland has joined forces in the rescue efforts and tents ,clothes and medicine are badly in need of for the earthquake victims.

　　　 The mountainous terrain ,heavy rain and several aftershocks all prevented rescue efforts on Thursday. The rain could cause more badly damaged homes to fall down.

　　　 More dead and injured are expected “as rescuers have yet reach many faraway areas”. It is very hard for rescue workers because most houses and scattered around the mountains ,which as inhabited by Yi and other ethnic minority groups.

　　　 The quake hit the area at 5:10 a.m. Beijing time( 2,110 Wednesday GMT). Earthquakes regularly affect the two counties, with 2 quakes measuring 5.0 and 6.0 on the Richter scale killing at least 3 people and injuring more than 1,500 in Ninglang in November 1998.

　　　 Birds flock to parks in up-market neighborhoods, avoiding those in the poorer parts of town ,researchers have discovered.

　　　 Anne Kinzig and her colleagues at Arizona State University studied 15 parks in Phoenix and found the most diverse bird populations in the smartest parts of town. To their surprise ,the socio-economic factors explained bird diversity better than anything about park ecology ,such as tree diversity and vegetation structure. In fact, parks in the poorest parts of town had the highest tree and vegetation diversity ,but the lowest bird diversity. “We wouldn’t have guessed it.” says Kinzing. “It’s telling us we need to look further into a field for the answer.”

　　　 Her team is now trying to track down exactly what it is about luxurious neighborhoods that the birds like. Mike Thomas of the British Trust for Ornithology is not surprised by the results. “The area around gardens and parks determines which birds visit,” he says that lager gardens tend to contain a greater variety of habitats and so can support different bird species.

　　　 Through a series of experiments an American scientist has gained an understanding of the social structure of the most complex of ant societies. The ants examined are the only creatures other than man to have given up hunting and collecting for a completely agricultural way of life. In their underground nests they cultivate gardens on soil made from finely chopped leaves. This is a complex operation requiring considerable division of labour. The workers of this type of ants can be divided into four groups according to the size .Each of the groups performs a particular set of jobs.
