On an airplane, a spacecraft or a man-made satellite, there is usually an installed device called the“ black box”.Made of a special kind of material, it would remain unbroken, even if the entire craft were blown to pieces. The box records some important data, which provide clues as to what changes had occurred before the real thing came along and help to discover the causes of the disaster.

The black box, therefore, becomes the last piece of evidence left .More often, it reveals a shocking fact that many aircrafts met their disasters only because of a simple but fatal mistake

Some had not been supplied with sufficient fuel; others crashed due to a bird flying in their paths. In many cases, the pilot had been tired. In 1986,the famous U.S. space shuttle Challenger exploded soon after launch, because a screw on it was a bit loose.

An idea thus occurs to me: if a human being was equipped with a similar device, tracking all the subtle inner changes that had taken place over time, the results could astonish the world. Newspapers carry no few such stories from day to day-cases of graft or bribe-taking, how an innocent man was robbed and killed, and so on. A fatal error, committed by a criminal at a particular point in his life, may have arisen from a small quarrel or out of envy. The number of those who were born evil and deliberately sent themselves to the“gallows(绞架)”is in fact extremely small. The disappointment towards the last moment of their life is no different from a struggle against an aircraft crash.

Behave properly in small matters and take best care of the soul-this,I insist,is the message from that mysterious box planted deep inside human souls.

Cigarette pack warning that remind smokers of the fatal consequences of their habit may actually make them smoke more for they know death cannot be eventually avoided, according to researchers.

A small study by psychologists from the US, Switzerland and Germany showed that warnings unrelated to death, such as “smoking makes you unattractive” or“ smoking brings you and the people around you severe damage”, were more effective in changing smokers attitudes toward their habit. This was especially the case in people who smoked to boost their self-esteem, such as youth who took up the habit to impress or fit in with their peers(同龄人)and others who thought smoking increased their social value, the researchers said.

“In general, when smokers are faced with death-related anti-smoking messages on cigarette packs, they produce contrary reactions as reflected in their willingness to continue the risky smoking behavior,”the study said.“To succeed with anti-smoking messages on cigarette packs one has to take into consideration that death warnings may make people smoke.”

Published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, the study was based on 39 psychology students, aged between 17 and 41, who said they were smokers.

On the one hand, death-related warnings were not effective and even ironically caused more positive smoking attitudes among smokers who based their self-esteem on smoking, according to the study. On the other hand, warning messages that were unrelated to death effectively reduced the smoking attitude that smokers can base their self-esteem on smoking.

The researchers said this finding can be explained by the fact that warnings such as“ smoking makes you unattractive”may be particularly threatening to people who believe that smoking makes them feel valued by others or improves their self-image.
