M:Would you please tell me the time now?

W:Five o'clock.

M:If you can make up your mind about the color,I can start on the outside of your house by early next week.

W:Well, right now I think I want white for the door and yellow for the wall, but I'll let you know tomorrow for sure.

Text 3

W:I received a letter from my aunt two weeks ago.But I am up to my neck in work so that I hardly find time to write back.

M:If I were you,I would send her an e-mail.It is so quick and convenient! Your aunt is sure to be happy with it.

Text 4

W:Have you planned your holiday?

M:Well,I had intended to visit Beijing, but my wife insists on seeing Guangzhou and Shenzhen in the south and my son Bill wants to go to the beach.I think both my wife and I will have to give up our ideas to please Bill.

Text 5

M:I have been greatly impressed by the changes in China over the past 20 years, especially the railway service.

W:Yes.Steam trains have given way to electric trains and all our trains run much faster and become more comfortable than before.

Text 6

M:What are you doing?

W:I'm writing a letter.

M:But you don't often write.Who are you writing to?

W:My aunt.

M:What do you want to say?

W:Just to thank her for giving me the birthday present.

M:But she hasn't sent you a present this year.

W:No.I'm writing to thank her for last year's present.

M:Do you think she will understand you?

W:Sure,my letter will help her to remember my birthday is coming soon.

M:So you are expecting another present from her.

Text 7

M:What's the matter with you?

W:Oh,I feel terrible.I had a fever last night.

M:Did you take your temperature?

W:No.I didn't dare to take any medicine.

M:Let me listen to your chest. Please take a deep breath.

W:Is there anything serious?

M:Don't worry.There is nothing serious.

W:Do I have to lie in bed?

M:Of course, you should lie in bed till the fever is gone. Here's the medicine for you.

W:Shall I come again?

M:I don't think you need to come again.I'm sure you will be all right soon.

Text 8

W:Hi,Jeff,I have been looking for you.Do you think you could help me buy a car?

M:Sure, what kind of car do you want?

W:A NISSAN.

M:Can you pay for it?

W:Yes.I have enough money.

M:How much is enough?

W:The most I could spend is 2,000.

M:You'll never get a new car for that.A used car is your only hope.A used car is OK,if everything goes well.

W:I just heard about something you may want to know.My friend's grandma lives next door to an old woman. She and my mother just mentioned that her eyesight is so bad she had to give up her driver's licence. That means she can't drive any more.

M:Is her car very good? How much do you think she wants?

W:It's really very good, only 43,000 miles on it and most of those come from her driving down to New York each winter, but I don't know the price yet.

Text 9

W:Tom,does your throat hurt?

M:Yes.

W:OK.Do you want to get better?

M:Yes.

W:OK.We want you to get better, too. You'll have your tonsils out tomorrow, and you won't get so many colds any more.

M:But if I have my tonsils out tomorrow.I'll miss my birthday party on Saturday party.

W:I know. It's a problem, isn't it? Let me try to work something out.

M:What?

W:I have to think about it.

M:You're joking with me.

W:Oh,I'm not,Tom.Give a chance to think about it,and I'll get a new idea.

M:A surprise?

W:Maybe. But you just put on your clothes, and I'll think of a surprise.

M:Will it hurt?

W:No.There are other boys and girls, and they are having tonsils out.

M:I don't want to.

W:Change your clothes,Tom.Everything will just be fine.

Almost every family buys at least one copy of a newspaper every day. Some people buy as many as two or three different newspapers. But why do people read newspapers?

Five hundred years ago, news of important happenings took months and even years to travel from one country to another. The news passed from mouth to mouth and sometimes was not true.Today we can read in our newspapers about important events that occurred in faraway countries on the same day they happened.

Besides supplying news from all over the world, newspapers give us a lot of other useful information. There are weather reports, radio, television and film guides, book reviews, stories, and of course, advertisements. There are all sorts of advertisements.Large companies pay the newspapers thousands of dollars for the advertising space to bring attention to their products so that their products can go into almost every home in the country. For those who produce newspapers, advertisements make it possible for them to sell their newspapers at a low price.
