Success in life depends to a great extent on what we mean by success. To some people money is the only real indication(象征) of achievement in the modern world. Their evaluation of success is based on the state of their bank balance and the power that goes with it. Their life is devoted to making money and they are at a loss to understand people whose ideas are different from their own. These are people, however, who consider their lives successful if they are doing what they enjoy doing through it may not bring them any great financial(财政) reward. A man who spends his time gardening might consider himself successful if the flowers blossomed and his trees gave fruit. Nursing, teaching, running a Youth Club all bring their own kind of success to those interested in them. Success can be found in painting a picture nobody will ever see, sailing a boat, watching the stars, collecting stamps----almost anything that involve personal efforts. The great thing is to believe that success is not necessarily public.

73.Painting a picture nobody will ever see may mean_______.

A.that it is a failure. B.that the painter can make no money.

C.a success to the painter. D.that it is worthless.

 74. “They are at a loss to understand” means that________.

A.They will lose something if they try to understand.

B.They will lose their temper( 脾气 )to understand.

I really love my job because I enjoy working with small children and like the challenges and awards from the job.I also think my work is important. There was a time when I thought I would never have that sort of career.

I wasn’t an excellent student because I didn’t do much schoolwork. In my final term I started thinking what I might do and found I didn’t have much to offer. I just accepted that I wasn’t the type to have a career.

I then found myself a job, looking after two little girls. It wasn’t too bad at first. But the problems began when I agreed to live in,so that I would be there if my boss had to go out for business in the evening. We agreed that if I had to work extra hours one week, she’d give me time off the next.but unfortunately,it didn’t often work out.Iwas getting extremely tired and fed up,because I had too many late night and early morning with the children.

One Sunday,I was in the park with the children, and met Megan who used to go to school with me.I told her about my situation. She suggested me that I should do a course and met a qualification if I wanted to work with children.I didn’t think I would be accepted because I didn’t take many exams in school.

She persuaded me to phone the local college and they were really helpful. My experience counted for a lot and I got on a part-time course. I had to leave my job with the family and got work helping out at a kindergarten.

Now I’ve got a full-time job there. I shall always be thankful to Megan. I wish I had known earlier that you could have a career, even if you aren’t top of the class at school.

Our spiritual intelligence quotient(精神智商),or SQ,helps us understand ourselves, and live fuller, happier lives.

While we’re all born with SQ,most of us don’t even realize that we have it.Fortunately, you don’t have to sign up for classes to learn how to improve your SQ.Here are some simple steps that can lead you to this new level of understanding.

Sit Quietly. The process of developing spiritual intelligence begins with solitude(独处)and silence. To tune in to your spirit, you have to turn down the volume(强度) in your busy, noisy ,complicated life and force yourself to do nothing at all.Start small by creating islands for silence in your day.In the car ,instead of reading or doing something else, use the time to think. At work, shut the door to our office between meeting, take a few breaths and let them out very, very slowly.Enjoy stillness in your home after the kids are finally in bed.

Step Outside. For many people, nature sets their spirit free.Go outside to watch a beautiful sunset. If you are walking with your dog, take the time to admire flowers in bloom;follow the fight of birds;watch clouds float overhead.

Ask Questions of Yourself.Ask open-ended questions, such as “What am I feeling?” “What are my choices?” or “Where am I heading?” but don’t expect an answer to arrive through some supernatural form or e-mail. “Rarely do I get an immediate answer to my question,”says Reverend Joan Carter,a Presbyterian minister in Sausalito,California. “But later that day I suddenly find myself thinking about a problem in a perspective(角度 ) I never considered before.”

Trust Your Spirit. While most of us rely on gut feeling(第六感觉)to realize danger, spiritual intelligence pushes us,not away from, but towards some action that will lead to a greater good.

61.The passage is mainly about________.

A.what your SQ is and in what way it can benefit your life.

B.what your SQ is and what way it can be improved.

C.the relationship between your SQ and your life.

D.advantages and disadvantages of SQ.

62.The underlined phrase “tune in to your spirit”in the third paragraph probably means_______.

A.get your spirit relaxed. B.keep up your spirit.

C.keep seated quietly. ge your spirit.

63.The author mentions the example of Reverend Joan Carter to show that______.

A.there are no immediate answers to your questions.

B.e-mails can’t keep working out a problem.

C.the more questions you ask,the better answers you’ll get.

ging your way of thinking might help you solve a problem.

64.From the passage,we can know that the most important thing to improve your SQ is _____.

A.a peaceful mind B.deep thought

The Italian island of Sardinia recently lost its oldest citizen.Family members say Antonoo Todde died in his sleep early this month.Mr Todde was 112 years old.He was less than three weeks away from his 113th birthday.Record –keeping experts say he was the world’s oldest man.

His long life and that of other very old Sardinians are the subjects of a scientific project called Akea.Luca Deiana of Sassari University is directing the study. He says the name Akea comes from a traditional greeting on Sardinia. It means “health and life for 100 years.”Professor Deiana and his team started to collect information for the study in 1997.They identified( 确定 )more than 220 Sardinians who were centenarians------100 years old or older. His team required three documents to confirm a person’s age. They were a government birth record,a church record and a statement by a close family member.

The Akea study has produced two major findings. The first is Sardinia’s extremely high numner of centenarians. The island has about 135 centenarians for every one million people. In other Western countries, the average is about seventy-five centenarians for every one million people. The second major finding was an unusual rate of female to male centenarians.Sardia has two women centanrians for every male centenarian. In central Sardinia there are equal numbers of female and male centenarians.

Studies in other parts of the world have shown a much higher percentage of female centenarians. The Akea study collected information about the health and diet of about 140 of the centenarians About ninety percent of those in the study also agreed to provide blood for scientific testing. The study team hopes to identify genetic material in the blood that can be linked to successful aging.Study learders say there is no single reason why people on Sardinia live so long .They believe the answer is a combination of genetic and environmental conditions.
