On a cold winter night,I know that there are lots of reasons to stay home and watch videos, but I love to go out to the movies. The films look better in the theater. The screen is so wide that it seems to surround you.You really get the feeling that you are closer to the action. The costumes and the settings look so much more beautiful on the big screen. And,of course, because of the equipment and the acoustics(音响效果)in the theater, the sound is so much better, too. The special effects don't look or sound as good at home.Plus,I like seeing amovie with other people in the theater. The reaction of the crowd can intensify(增强)my feelings.I like noticing the parts of the movie people laugh at or cry over.I like listening to the reaction of people after the movie is over.I even like watching the previews and the special messages before the movie starts. The previews can be really funny, and they help me to decide whether I want to see the film when it comes out.Last,I love the popcorn.

Seeing a movie is a social event.I enjoy going out and making an evening out of it.If I'm with a friend,we'll go and have coffee either before or after the film. It's really my idea of a good date.If there's a film I especially like,I'll invite someone out and see it again. If the film is very moving or extremely well done,I might go back two or three times. If I'm alone,I usually go during the week when the ticket price is lower. On the weekend, the tickets are more expensive and the lines are very long.I like going with friends to theaters. You can see some of the old classics or movies by a well-known director. The theater gives a special student rate,so we don't have to pay much to go.In some cities, there are film festivals that show new and experimental films. At the festival, there are a lot of people who come to see these films. There is often a lot of excitement at these events.41.What do people usually do on a cold winter night?

Everyone worries about their health. For some it's about losing a bit of weight, others that they'll inherit(遗传得到)diseases which afflicted(使……苦恼)their parents. But what if someone told you in just two short months you could be feeling on top of the world? That's exactly what Andrew Weil has to say in his latest book,8Weeks to Optimum Health.Weil-a doctor and bestselling author of Spontaneous Healing-believes we can all be optimistic(乐观)about the functioning of the body's natural healing system, not just on a day-to-day basis but also in responding to everyday illnesses and more serious medical conditions. He has drawn up a programme which makes simple changes to our lifestyle in terms of diet, exercise, supplements and mental and spiritual development, inturn prompting“long-lasting and dramatically beneficial effects for our health”.Of course, everyone is different so Weil also provides specific guidance for men and women, pregnant women, people under 20,over 50and over 70,those who are overweight, people at risk from cardiovascular(心脏血管的)disease and cancer and those who have young children. There are even sections devoted to the health of those who live in big cities and who travel frequently.

So how does it work?Weil says it has much to do with the body's own healing system.“Health is wholeness and balance,an inner resilience(恢复力)that allows you to meet the demands of living without being overwhelmed. If you have that kind of resilience, you can experience the inevitable interactions with germs and not get infections, you can be in contact with allergens(过敏原)and not suffer allergies and you can sustain exposure to carcinogens(致癌物质)and not get cancer.”

Week one begins with a general cupboard clearance-out must go all unhealthy foods like oils and artificial sweeteners-and an introduction to vitamin C,walking and eating more broccoli(椰菜)-a nutrient and fibre-rich vegetable.Breath observation-pay attention to your breathing patterns-also starts now.

As the weeks progress,so Weil steps up the demands.Week two calls for an increase in your consumption of whole grains and an end to drinking chlorinated(经过氯处理的)water. He also suggests attempting a one-day“news-fast”. With each week comes the adoption of new supplements and fresh dietary habits.Exercise is increased and more mental and spiritual tasks are set.Alongside each chapter he includes true stories of those“healed”by the plan, plus various healthy recipes. But he warns:“Perfect health is not possible-beware of persons and products that promise it.Health is not static(静态的):it is normal to lose it periodically in order to come back to it in a better way.”

Weil says the eight-week programme gives users the information needed to keep their healing system in working order.“It shows you how to build a lifestyle that will protect you from premature(过早的)disability and death and it teaches practices and skills that will enable you to prepare body, mind and spirit for any eventual health crisis you may face.Start it now and reap the benefits for the rest of your life.”

Every year more and more plants and animals disappear never to be seen again.Strangely,it is the most intelligent but most thoughtless animal that is causing most of the problems- man.Nature is very carefully balanced and if this balance is disturbed, animals can disappear alarmingly(令人担忧地)fast.Every day, thousands of species of animals draw closer to extinction. There are countless numbers of species which may become extinct before they are even discovered.

In many lakes the fish are dying.Fishermen are worried because every year there are fewer fish and some lakes have no fish at all.Scientists are beginning to get worried too. What is killing the fish?

The problem is acid rain.Acid rain isa kind of air pollution. It is caused by factories that burn coal or oil or gas. These factories send smoke high into the air.The wind often carries the smoke far from the factories. Some of the harmful substances in the smoke may come down with the rain hundreds of miles away.

The rain in many places isn't natural and clean any more. It's full of acid chemicals. When it falls in lakes,it changes them too.The lakes become more acidic.Acid water is like vinegar or lemon juice. It hurts when it gets in your eyes.It also kills the plants and animals that usually live in lake water. That is why the fish are dying in lakes.

But dead fish may be just the beginning of the problem.Scientists are finding other effects of acid rain.In some large areas trees are dying. Not just one tree here and there, but whole forests. At first scientists couldn't understand why. There were no bugs or diseases in thesetrees. The weather was not dry.But now they think that the rain was the cause.Acid rain is making the earth more acidic in these areas. Some kinds of trees cannot live in the soil that is very acidic.

Now scientists are also beginning to study the effects of acid rain on larger animals. For example, they believe that some deer in Poland are less healthy because of acid rain.If deer are hurt by the rain, what about people? This is the question many people are beginning to ask.No one knows the answer yet.But it is an important question for us all.

In 1608an Englishman whose name was Thomas Coryate visited Italy. He liked the country and noted down every interesting thing he found. But there was one thing which he found more interesting than the others. In his diary Thomas wrote,“When the Italians eat meat, they use small forks. They do not eat with hands because,as they say, people do not always have clean hands.”

Before leaving for England,Thomas Coryate bought a few forks.

At home Thomas gave a dinner party to show the invention to his friends. When the servants brought the steak,he took out a fork and began to eat like they did in Italy.

Everybody looked at him in surprise. When he told his friends what it was, they all wanted to take a good look at the strange thing. All his friends said that the Italians were very strange people because the fork was very inconvenient.

Thomas Coryate tried to prove the opposite. He said it was not nice to eat meat with one's fingers because they were not always clean.

Everybody got angry at that.Did Mr Coryate think that people in England always had dirty hands? And weren't the ten fingers we had enough for us?

Thomas Coryate wanted to show that it was very easy to use the fork. But the first piece of meat he took with the fork fell to the floor. His friends began to laugh and he had to take the fork away.
