Bill Clinton was born on Aug.19, 1946. Three months before his birth, his father had died-when driving home to his pregnant wife, Virginia, he went off a high way, was thrown out of the car and drowned in a river. When Bill was 4, his mother remarried Roger Clinton. And there were always troubles: a sometimes violent, alcoholic stepfather and a half-brother. Only one year after the marriage, the drunken stepfather fired a shotgun at the ceiling to keep his bride and stepson from leaving the house. Virginia was very much frightened. So Roger Clinton beat Virginia from time to time. But teenager Clinton played a role of protector of his mother bravely. The stepfather never laid another hand on Virginia. In high school, he was very good at Latin and maths. He also played saxophone in the band. At age 16, as a member of a youth group, Clinton met President John F. Kennedy at the White House-it led him to the life of public service. Once he set his mind to do something, he did not give up. He was elected governor of Arkansas at the age of 32. Clinton has said he ran for president to make the country a better place for people like Chelsea, his daughter. He did win. At the age of 46, he became the third youngest president in the nation’s history. 72. When this passage was published, Clinton was _____. How many coins have you got in your pocket right now? Three? Two? Or one? With a phonecard you can make up to 200 calls without any change at all. 1. What do you do with it? Go to a telephone box marked “Phonecard.” Put in your card, make your call and when you’ve finished, a screen tells you how much is left on your card. It costs no extra for the cards, and the calls cost 10p per unit, the same as any other payphone call. You can buy them in units of 10, 20, 40, 100 or 200. 2. Now appear in a shop near you Near each Cardphone place you’ll find a shop where you can buy one. They’re at bus, train and city tube (地铁) stations, many universities, hospitals and clubs, restaurants and gas stations on the highway and shopping centers. At airports and seaports. 3. My husband hasn’t stopped laughing about a funny thing that happened to me. It’s funny now but it wasn’t at the time. Last Friday, after doing all the family shopping in town, I wanted a rest before catching the train, so I bought a newspaper and some chocolate and went into the station coffee shop-that was a cheap self-service place with long tables to sit at. I put my heavy bag down on the floor, put the newspaper and chocolate on the table to keep a place, and went to get a cup of coffee. When I went back with the coffee, there was someone in the next seat. It was one of those wild-looking youngsters, with dark glasses and worn clothes, and hair colored bright red at the front. Not so unusual these days. What did surprise me was that he’d started to eat my chocolate! Naturally, I was annoyed. However, to avoid trouble-and really I was rather uneasy about him-I just looked down at the front page of the newspaper, tasted my coffee and took a bit of chocolate. The boy looked at me closely. Then he took a second piece of my chocolate. I could hardly believe it. Still I didn’t dare to start an argument. When he took a third piece. I felt more angry than uneasy. I thought, “Well, I shall have the last piece.” And I got it. The boy gave me a strange look, then stood up. As he left he shouted out. “This woman’s crazy!” Everyone stared. That was embarrassing(令人难堪的) enough, but it was worse when I finished my coffee and got ready to leave. My face went red-as red as his hair-when I realized I’d made a mistake. It wasn’t my chocolate that he’d been taking. There was mine, unopened, just under my newspaper. 64. The woman telling the story _____. A. always went shopping with her family on Fridays B. had been very busy and needed some time to recover C. wanted a newspaper and some chocolate to take home to her family D. bought some chocolate so that she could keep a place at the table 65. When the woman came back to the table, she was surprised _____. A. because she wasn’t sure whether the youngster was a boy or a girl B. because the youngster was dressed so strangely C. because there was already someone sitting in the next seat D. because the youngster’s behavior seemed rude 66. When the woman saw the boy go on eating the chocolate, she felt _____ A. too tired to start an argument B. too shy to look in the boy’s direction C. more and more disappointed at losing the chocolate D. more and more angry with the boy 67. The woman’s face turned red _____ A. because she realized that she had been quite wrong about the boy B. because she realized that the boy was poor and angry C. because she saw everyone staring at her D. because she hated being shouted at
