A Russian cosmonaut circling 384km above the earth on the International Space Station married his fiancée in Texas in the United States on Monday in the first space wedding. Peering into each other's eyes through a satellite video hookup (连接装置) at NASA's Johnson Space Center, the two exchanged vows (誓言) before 200 people in a ceremony that ended with bride Ekaterina Dmitrlev blowing the new husband Yuri Malenchenko a long distance kiss.

Dmitriev, dressed in a traditional white wedding dress, told reporters she was very happy, even though she will not see Malenchenko, 41, until he returns to earth in late October or early November. "It was cool; it went straight to the heart," she said, standing next to a life-size cutout of Malenchenko that was to be his stand-in at a space-tiptoed wedding reception (招待会). Wedding organizer Jo Ann Woodward said the ceremony, closed to the press, was highly traditional except for the absence of the groom. Friend Harry Noe stood in the groom's place, which is permitted under Texas law, and gave Dmitrlev, 26, her ring.

At the same time, Malenchenko, who wore a bow tie with his flight suit, slipped on a ring his new bride had shipped earlier to the space station. His crewmate and best man, ED Lu, played the "wedding march" on an electronic keyboard. Texas judge Bill Yeoman presided (主持) over the ceremony, which was conducted in English.

Dmitriev said she and Malenchenko began their relationship in April 2002 after meeting at the Outpost Tavem, a favorite astronaut haunt (常去之处) near Johnson Space Center. Neither NASA nor Russian space officials accept the wedding, but the couple insisted they did not want to wait for Malenchenko's return. Dmitriev, who was born in the Soviet Union but came with her family to the United States at an early age and works in a private business near the space center, said they married now because their long distance relationship had brought them closer.

"A long distance relationship is a lot of communication. He was closer to me because d the communication we have," she said. Besides, she added, "It was a celestial (神圣的) soulful connection flint we have. I can't explain it to you other than that." The two plan to honeymoon in Australia after Malenchenko's return, then have a traditional religious wedding in Russia next June, Woodward said.

                  Delhi 8/1/2004
Dear Mum and Dad,
We have just arrived in India and ate in the busy, noisy and exciting city d Delhi. This morning we visited the Red Fort. Time we found magnificent places, mosques (清真寺) and splendid buildings. I could have spent hours them. This afternoon, among other things, we visited the India Gate - a memorial to Indian soldiers lost at war earlier this century. The gate was the largest I have ever seen.
   Wish you were here.

                 Bikaner 13/1/2004
Dear Youming,
We have arrived in Bikaner leaving Delhi behind us. Unfortunately, there just wasn't enough I/me to see everything in only four days. Outside Bikaner's dry walls are miles of desert wilderness. Tomorrow I will look forward to examining the wall itself carefully. The sandstone architecture (建筑) is said to be unbelievable. We are also going to take a camel ride though some of the desert. I will make sue that I have lots of photos taken. After three days here the next stop is Jaipur.
Love.

Dear Libing,
I am writing from the Johari bazar in Jaipur. This is a wonderful jewelry market. I've found all sorts of interesting treasures. This morning we visited the Haws Mahal, "The Palace d the Winds". It is the most unbelievable structure. The front of the palace is all windows and screens. Yesterday we visited the City Palace and the Jantar Mantar. After two days here, the next stop is Agar, where I look forward to visiting the Fort and the Taj.
See you soon.

                  Agra 21/1/2004
Dear Jinao,
So far so good. Once we arrived in Agra, we were straight to the Taj Mahal (泰姬陵). I have never seen anything so wonderful. They said that it would look something like Humuyan's Tomb (Delhi) and it does! Them really is nothing mom amazing titan the bright white d the Taj shining in the daylight. Clearly the pollution is a real danger to it. We really covered a great deal in three days here. It's been an amazing experience and I'm sorry that we'll be flying home this evening.
Bye for now.

It's no secret that most busy American mothers use the TV set as a live-in babysitter. In some households the tube holds a child's attention for the odd half hour or two while mom works on dinner; in others it is the child's daytime companion. Is there any harm in this?

There are hot arguments over the question, and periodically research is published showing that TV reduces attention span, makes children anxious or leads them to violence. In today's cartoon, David Horsey makes fun d the claims of "children's TV", the special programming that supposedly uses entertainment to help youngsters to learn to read and take their first steps in the world outside their family. What do children really get from this programming?

Horsey's doubt is that children's programming chiefly turns kids into TV addicts (上瘾的人), not into readers or happy mixers. Children are held by the figure on the screen. attract small children? "Can you say TV? The sooner the kid learns the word, the more effectively he can remind his mother to turn on the tube.

A child hooked on TV is a viewer open to commercial (商业的) messages, and there are plenty of those targeting children of all ages. Thus, at the very least, mom's search for peace and quiet sets the stage for her child's transformation (改造) into a American consumer - and, of course, takes up the time that could be used for other, perhaps more desirable, transformations.
