Explosive sound and energy
ROCK music didn’t exist 60 years ago. 1 Someone didn’t just wake up and invent rock. So, how did it happen? What is rock?Although impossible to strictly define, it’s generally recognized that rock music was born in 1950s America. 2 At this time, early “rockers”were mixing the country music of white America with the rhythm and blues sound loved by the black US citizens. The result was rock‘n’ roll. The record most commonly considered as the beginning of the rock ‘n’ roll period is Bill Haley & The Comets’1954 recording of “Rock Around the Clock”. 3 Elvis’s 1950s recordings established the basic language of rock ‘n’ roll; his explosive stage presence set standards for the music’s visual image, while his voice was powerful and interesting.
4 Despite the different directions and sound of rock bands over the last 50 years, there is something common to all the greats:a charming lead vocalist, a talented guitarist full of energy and creativity, a bassist with cool indifference and a drummer.
For most of its life, rock has been split into different parts, creating new styles every few years-giving birth to a never-ending number of sub-genres. 5 Rock is a generic term, but it’s exciting that it can now mean so many different things.
A.Rock is my favorite and I’ll be a popular singer.
B.Now, it’s one of the world’s most popular genres. But musical styles don’t spring up overnight.
C.Rock had a specific sound and image for only a few of its early years. As time went by, the genre began to place equal emphasis on skills and pushing the boundaries of the music.
D.In fact, in the West, musically speaking, the years 1953~1955 are known as the rock ‘n’ roll years.
E.As a result, “rock”has been used to describe everything from bands playing catchy rhythms to groups based on tuneless, noisy guitars.
F.Rock music will be held in our school if we send an invitation to the band.
G.But it was Elvis Presley, known as “The King of Rock and Roll”, who really popularized the new sound throughout America and the Western world.

Many years ago, when I was a man in my twenties, I worked as a salesman for a piano company.
We 1 our pianos all over the state by advertising in small town 2 .Every time we advertised, we would receive a reply on a postcard which said,“Please 3 me a new piano for my little granddaughter. It 4 be red mahogany(红木). I can pay $10 a month with my egg money.”Of course, we could not sell a(n) 5 piano for $10 a month. 6 her cards kept on coming.
A couple of years later, I 7 my own piano company, and when I 8 in that area, the postcards started coming to me. For months, I ignored(不理睬) 9 --what else could I do?
But then, one day I 10 to be in the area. I had a red mahogany piano on my little truck. Despite knowing that I was about to 11 a terrible business decision, I managed to find the old woman and took the new piano in her house and placed it 12 I thought the roof would be least likely to rain on it. I told her and a little barefoot girl to try to 13 the chickens off it, and I left sure I had just 14 a new piano.
But the 15 came in, all 52 of them as agreed, sometimes with coins. It was unbelievable!
Then one day I was in Memphis on 16 business. As I was sitting at the bar having a drink, I heard the most beautiful piano music behind me. I looked 17 ,and there was a lovely young woman 18 a very nice ground piano.
She smiled at me, asked for requests, and when she took a 19 she sat down at my table.
“Aren't you the man who sold my grandma a piano a long time ago?”
I suddenly remembered. My Lord, it was her! It was the little barefoot girl!
I did have to go to my room because men don't like to be 20 crying public.
After the violent earthquake that shook Los Angeles in 1994, earthquake scientists had good news to report. The damage and death toll (伤亡) could have been much worse. More than 60 people died in this earthquake. By comparison, an earthquake of similar intensity that shook America in 1988 claimed 25,000 victims. Injures and deaths were relatively less in Los Angles because the quake occurred at 4:31 a.m. on a holiday, when traffic was light on the city’s highways. In addition, changes made to the construction codes in Los Angeles during the last 20 years have strengthened the city’s buildings and highways, making them more resistant (有抵抗力的) to quakes. Despite the good news, civil engineers aren’t resting on their successes. Pinned to their drawing boards are blueprints (蓝图的) for improved quake-resistant buildings. The new designs should offer even greater security to cities where earthquakes often take place. In the past, making structures quake-resistant meant firm yet flexible (柔韧的) materials, such as steel and wood, which bend without breaking. Later, people tried to lift a building off its foundation, and insert rubber and steel between the building and its foundation to reduce the impact (影响) of ground vibrations (颤动). The most recent designs give buildings brains as well as concrete and steel supports, called smart buildings, the structures respond like living organisms to an earthquake’s vibrations. When the ground shakes and the buildings tip forward, the computer would force the building to shift in the opposite direction. The new smart structures could be very expensive to build. However, they would save many lives and would be less likely to be damaged during earthquakes. 1. One reason why the loss of lives in the Los Angeles earthquake was comparatively low is that ____. A. new computers had been installed in the buildings B. occurred in the residential areas (居民区) rather than on the highways C. large numbers of Los Angeles residents had rushed into Los Angeles for holiday D. improvements had been made in the construction of buildings and highways 2. The function of the computer mentioned in the passage is to ____. A. counterbalance an earthquake’s action on the building B. predict the coming of an earthquake with accuracy C. help strengthen the foundation of the building D. measure the impact of an earthquake’s vibrations 3. The smart buildings discussed in the passage ____. A. would cause serious financial problems B. would be worthwhile though costly C. would increase the complexity of architectural design D. can reduce the ground vibrations caused by earthquakes 4. It can be inferred from the passage that in minimizing (最小化) the damage caused by earthquakes attention should be focused on ____. A. the increasing use of rubber and steel in capital construction B. the development of flexible building materials C. the reduction of the impact of ground vibrations D. early forecasts of earthquakes 5. The author’s main purpose in writing the passage is to ____. A. compare the results of the earthquakes that occurred in the US B. encourage civil engineers to make more extensive use of computers C. outline the history of the development of quake-resistant building materials D. report new developments in constructing quake-resistant building
