IS THERE LIFE ON EARTH?
There was great excitement on the planet of Venus(金星) this week. For the first time Venusian scientists managed to land a satellite on the planet Earth, and it has been sending back signals as well as photographs ever since.?
The satellite was directed into an area known as Manhattan (named after the great Venusian astronomer Prof. Manhattan, who first discovered it with his telescope 20 000 light years ago).Because of excellent weather conditions and extremely strong signals, Venusian scientists were able to get valuable information as to feasibility(可行性) of a manned flying saucer(飞碟) landing on Earth.A press conference was held at the Venus Institute of Technology.?
“We have come to the conclusion, based on last week's satellite landing,” Pro. Zog said,“that there is no life on the Earth.”?
“How do you know this?” the science reporter of the Venus Evening Star asked. ?
“For one thing, Earth's surface in the area of Manhattan is composed of solid concrete(混凝土)and nothing can grow there. For another, the atmosphere is filled with carbon monoxide(一氧化碳) and other deadly gases and nobody could possibly breathe this air and survive.”?
“What does this mean as far as our flying saucer program is concerned?”?
“We shall have to take our own oxygen with us, which means a much heavier flying saucer than we originally planned. ”
“Are there any other hazards that you discovered in your studies?”?
“Take a look at this photo. You see this dark cloud floating over the surface of Earth? We call this the Consolidated Edison Belt. We don't know what it is made of, but it could give us a lot of trouble and we shall have to make further tests before we send a Venus Being there.”?
“If what you say is true, won't this set back the flying saucer program several years?”?
“Yes, but we shall proceed as soon as the Grubstart gives us the added funds.”?
“Prof. Zog, why are we spending billions and billions of zilches to land a flying saucer on Earth when there is no life there?”?
“Because if we Venusians can learn to breathe in an Earth atmosphere, then we can live anywhere.”
During the week of great excitement the Venusian scientists succeeded in getting important information on whether they can_______.
A. land a satellite with Venus astronauts on Earth
B. make a first?rate flying saucer?
C. get a Earth Being to Venus
D. direct a flying saucer into Manhattan?
According to Prof.Zog,the Venusians will have to take their own oxygen with them when they carry out their flying saucer program because_______.?
A. they need it on their way to the planet of Earth?
B. the Earth's atmosphere is filled with deadly gases?
C. oxygen is far from enough in the area of Manhattan where the saucer is to land?
D. there is no air on the planet of Earth?
The “dark black cloud” on the photograph refers to_______.?
A. the polluted air floating over the surface of Earth?
B. the mass of tiny drops of water floating above Earth?
C. the things that are unknown to everybody?
D. the dark clouds gathering before a storm breaks?
The author wishes to call our attention to the fact_______.?

C. that pollution has become so serious a problem on Earth that even Venusians find life there unbearable?
D. that it is difficult, if not altogether impossible, to land a manned flying saucer on Earth

"Over here you will notice what seems to be a river, but the satellite findings indicates it is polluted and the water is unfit to drink. This means we shall have to carry our own water, which will add even greater weight to the saucer."
"If all you say is true, won't this set back the flying saucer program several years?"
"Yes, but we shall continue as soon as the Grubstart gives us the added funds(资金)." Profession. Zog replied.

1. Ask your classmates if they are having trouble with the teacher, too. If they say yes, perhaps your teacher is to blame.
Are you working up to your ability? Maybe you got a C in your last test, and your teacher told you that you could do better. And the kid sitting beside you got a C, too.2. Isn’t this unfair? Well, it could be that your teacher knows that you could do better if you put more effort into it. 3.

Recently, a professor of philosophy in the United States has written a book called Money and the Meaning of Life. He has discovered that how we deal with money in our day-to-day life has more meaning than we usually think. One of the exercises he asked his students to do is to keep record of every penny they spend for a week. From the way they spend their money, they can see what they really value in life.
He says our relation with others often becomes clearly defined when money enters the picture. You might have wonderful friendship with somebody and you think that you are a very good friend. But you will know him only when you ask him to lend you some money. If he does, it brings something to the relationship that seems stronger than ever before. Or it can suddenly weaken the relationship if he doesn’t. This person may say that he has a certain feeling, but if it is not carried out in the money world, there is something less real about it.
Since money is so important to us, we consider those who possess a lot of it to be very important. The author interviewed some millionaires in researching his book.
Question: What is the most surprising thing you have discovered abotrt being rich, because you are a self-made man?
Answer: The most surprising thing is how people give me so much respect. I am nothing. I do not know much. All I am is rich.
People just have an idea of making more and more money, but what is it for? How much do I need for any given purposes in my life? In his book, the professor uncovered an important need in modern society: to bring back the idea that money is an instrument rather than the end. Money plays an important role in the material world, but expecting money to bring happiness may be missing the meaning of life.
56. The author seems to believe that asking your friend to lend you some money_______.
A. is a good way to test your friendship B. will do harm to your friendship
C. will strengthen your friendship D. is a good way to break off your friendship
57. What can we learn about the millionaire from his answer in the interview?
A. He does not feel that he is well educated.
B. He does not think that he is a very important person.
C. He doesn’t think that being rich is worth so much attention.
D. He does not consider himself to be very successful
58. What does the American professor of philosophy want to explain in his book?
A. Money is an end. B. Money is a means.
C. Money is everything. D. Money is unimportant.
59. Which of the following might the author disagree with?
A. Money is important in modern society.
B. The meaning of life does not completely lie in money.
C. Wealth will surely bring the owner happiness.
D. Happiness is not necessarily the result of wealth.
