Once upon a time,a poor family had only one small roll of expensive gold wrapping(包装)paper. The father had no money to buy any more.On Christmas Eve his 5-yeatold daughter decorated(装饰)a shoe box with all the gold paper and put it under the Christmas tree. The father was quite unhappy about it.

The next morning the little girl, filled with excitement, brought the gift box to her father and said.“This is for you,Daddy!”

As he opened the box,the father found it was empty. At once he shouted at her.“Don’t you know, young lady, when you give someone a present, there should be something inside the package!”

The little girl almost cried out.She looked up at him and said,“Daddy,it's not empty.I blew kisses into it until it was all full.”

The father was moved. He fell on his knees and put his arms around his pretty little girl.He asked her to forgive him for his unnecessary anger.

Before long an accident took the lire of the child. The father kept that little golden box by his bed for the following years of his life.Whenever he was faced with difficult problems,he would open the box, take out an imaginary(想象的)kiss and remember the love of his beautiful child who had put it there.

Do you need toedit your friends’?

Is your mobile phone directory full of phone numbers of people you don’t really want to talk to? Do you go out with people from work or school more often than with your real friends? Do you say yes to invitations because you think you should, not because you want to? If you answered yes to at least two of these questions, then perhaps you need to ‘edit your friends’?

Nowadays people like to spend a lot of time with people at work or classmates at schoolThe result is that we don’t have enough time to see our real, close friendsAs our lives get busier it becomes more important to spend the little free time we have with people we really want to see, people we love and who really love us

Who are the friends you need to edit? A few years ago I read a book about how to get rid of unnecessary possessions(物品)It said you should ask yourself about each thing you haveIs it useful? Do I really like it? Do I feel better every time I look at it? If the answer is no to any one of those questions, you should throw it awayMaybe we should ask similar questions about our friends

What kind of friends will you probably need to edit? Sometimes it’s an old friendSomebody who you used to have a lot in common with, but who, when you meet now, you have very little or nothing to say toOr it might be a new friend who you get on quite well with, but who is taking up too much of your timeNext time one of these people calls you and suggests a meeting, think, ‘Do I really want to see this person?’ and if the answer is no, say no, and make an excuseThat way you’ll have more time to spend with your real friends

(1)

People need to edit their friends when ________

[ ]

A.

they have moved to a different area

B.

C.

some of their friends don’t talk very much

D.

their friends are people from work or school

(2)

People don’t need to edit their ________

[ ]

A.

real friends

B.

young friends

C.

old friends

D.

new friends

(3)

What does the word“edit”in the passage mean?

[ ]

A.

Examine and choose

B.

Miss and see

C.

Believe and help

D.

Call and meet

(4)

What does the writer want to tell us in Paragraph 3?

[ ]

We should often throw some possessions

Most of our friends are not necessary at all

One day a person met Socrates and said, “ Do you know what I just heard about your friend?”
"Hold on a minute ,” Socrates replied. “Before telling me anything I'd like you to  pass  the  Filter
(过滤) Test.” “Filter Test?” “Yes.” Socrates continued. “Before you talk to me about my friend, it
might be a good idea to filter what you're going to say. That's why I call it the Filter Test. The first filter
is Truth (事实). Have you made sure that what you are about to tell me is true?” “No, in fact I just
heard about it and...” “ All right,” said Socrates. “So you don't know whether it's true or not. Now let's
try the second filter, the filter of Goodness (好处). Is what you are about to tell me about my friend
something good?” “ No, quite the opposite...” “So," Socrates continued, “you want to tell me something
bad about him, but you're not certain if it's true. Now there's one filter left: the filter of Usefulness
(有用). Will what you want to tell me about my friend be useful to me?” “No, not really. ” “Well,” said
Socrates, “if what you want to tell me is neither true nor good nor even useful, why will you tell it to
me?”
We can always join in loose talks(闲话). But when it comes to our friends, it's not worth it. Never
talk behindthe back about our near and dear friends.

1. What should the man do before he told something to Socrates?
______________________________________________________
2. How many filters were there in Socrates' test?

3. The person wanted to tell Socrates something _____    _______about his friend.

It's over three years since I began to learn English. I am glad that I am getting on well with it.  I find English very interesting, but quite difficult. When I first started, I thought I had only to remember the new words and learn some grammar. I know little about English idioms(习语). I thought each English word had a word with the same meaning in Chinese. When I learned to say "I see a book on the desk", I thought the English word "see" was just like the Chinese word "kan". So one day when my teacher asked me, "What are you doing?" I answered, "I'm seeing a book." "That's wrong," the teacher said. "You don't see a book. You read a book. You can't use an English word like a Chinese one. Be sure not to make the same mistake again."
After that I began to pay more attention to the differences between Chinese and English. For example, in English we say a "high mountain", but a "tall man". In Chinese we use the same word "gao" for both. Again in English we say "take part in the sports meeting", "attend a meeting" and "join the army", while in Chinese we can use "can jia" for all the three. It's interesting, isn't it? So to study English doesn't only mean hard work, it can be great fun, too! We not only have to pay attention to pronunciation, grammar, spelling and handwriting, we also have to understand English idioms. We can learn English well only in that way!
But all this is only a beginning and I still have a long way to go. I'll try my best and work even harder than before. I must speak and listen to English more both in and out of class. I must read and write more, too. I must learn English well so that I can work well when I grow up.
