I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and some homeless people frequent the stoplights. I often gave money to the homeless, feeling
1
for their bad luck. But later I became a single mom with no home, a huge debt. As a result, I
2
giving and became very

Things started to

for me. Again I had a home, and plenty of food, and I started to
5
myself out of debt. One day we saw a homeless person with the

, “Will work for food.” I

. My daughter commented, “Mommy, you
8
to give to those people in
9
.’’ I replied, “Honey, they just use that money for alcohol or other
10
things.” She didn’t respond. But when I said that, it didn’t feel right.
Three days later, I was driving to
11
up my daughter from school. A man was standing on the corner, and something deep
12
me said, “Just help him.”
13
I rolled down my window, and he ran over with enthusiasm, saying “God bless you, I only need 77 cents.” I
14
into my ashtray and strangely enough, there sat three quarters and two pennies.
I scooped(抓起)it up and gave it to him. He
15
with joy and tears in his

, “Wow, you just made it
17
for me to see my mom for Christmas! Thank you; the bus that had this great sale is

I was having my dinner at McDonald’s one evening when an old couple slowly walked in.They
1
their meal, took a table near the window and started
2
food out of the plate. There was one hamburger, one order of French fries(炸薯条) and one drink. The man
3
the food into two halves and carefully placed
4
before his wife.
He took a sip(一小口) of the drink. His wife also took one and then
5
the cup down between them.“That
6
old couple!All they can
7
is one meal for the two of them,”thought I.
8
the man began to eat his French fries,I
9
to my feet, went over and said that I was
10
to buy another meal for them. But he
11
refused me and said that they made it a
12
to share everything.
13
,the lady didn’t take a bite. She sat there
14
her husband eat,and taking turns(轮流) sipping the drink.Again I
15
to buy them something but was refused. When the man finished eating and was
16
his face with a napkin(纸巾),I
17
no longer stand it.I made an offer to them a third time.
18
being politely refused,I asked the lady
19
,“Madam, why aren’t you eating? You said that you share everything.
20
is it that you are waiting for?”“The teeth,”she answered.

School children are now constantly asked by their parents and teachers to study harder and harder. And the competition
1
the students themselves is growing in most schools in China. In my opinion, the fierce(激烈的)
2
in school
3
more harm than good.
Visiting a German city, I was
4
to be present at a parent-teacher meeting at a school.
5
were told at the meeting that their children's school grades were held to be a personal information
6
by the law, and that the school would not disclose(透露)the students' marks,
7
would the school report them to the parents. It is their view that a
8
school should encourage children to learn
9
without pressure. A student's intelligence(智力)and ability will be
10
later by competition in society.
In China, ranking students according to their examination has been
11
as a means of encouraging students to study harder.
A friend told me about a parent-teacher meeting she
12
with her daughter who was in the second grade.
At the meeting, a teacher read aloud
13
students in the class and their marks for different
14
. Good students came at the top of the list and poor
15
at the bottom. And in front of everybody at the meeting, the teacher gave warning
16
those poor students and their parents.
From this comparison, I
17
that teachers and school leaders in China ought to learn
18
more about children's psychology(心理学)and show their students more
19
. Such competition among students is unhealthy and should not be
20

The concept of solitude (独处) in the digital world is almost non-existent. In the world of digital technology, e-mail, social networking and online video games, information is meant to be
1
. Solitude can be hard to discover
2
it has been given up. In this respect, new technologies have
3
our culture.
The desire to be connected has brought solitude to a(n)
4
as we’ve known it. People have become so
5
in the world of networks and connections that one can often be contacted
6
they’d rather not be. Today we can talk, text, e-mail, chat and blog (写博客), not only from our
7
, but from our mobile phones as well.
Most developed nations have become
8
on digital technology simply because they’ve grown accustomed to it, and at this point not
9
it would make them an outsider.
10
, many jobs and careers require people to be
11
. From this point of view, technology has changed the culture of work. Being reachable might feel like a
12
to those who may not want to be able to be contacted at all times.
I suppose the positive side is that solitude is still possible for anyone who
13
wants it. Computers can be shut
14
and mobile phones can be turned off. The ability to be “connected”and “ on”has many
15
, as well as disadvantages. Travelers have ended up
16
on mountains, and mobile phones have saved countless lives. They can also make people feel
17
and forced to answer unwanted calls or
18
to unwanted texts.
Attitudes towards our connectedness as a society
19
across generations. Some find today’s technology a gift. Others consider it a curse. Regardless of anyone’s view on the subject, it’s hard to imagine what life would be like
20
daily advancements in technology.

I was shopping in the supermarket when I heard the young voice.
"Mom, come here! There's this lady here my
1
!"
The mother rushed to her son; then she turned to me to
2
.
I smiled and told her: "It's okay." Then I talked to the boy, "Hi, I'm Darryl Kramer. How are you?"
He
3
me from head to toe, and asked: "Are you a little
4
?
"Yes, I have a son," I answered.
"Why are you so little?" he asked.
"It's the way I was
5
," I said. "Some people are little. Some are tall. I'm just not going to grow any bigger." After I answered his other questions, I shook the boy's hand, and left.
My life as a little person is filled with
6
like that. I enjoy talking to children and explaining why I look different from their parents.
It takes only one glance to see my
7
. I stand 114 cm tall. I was born a dwarf(侏儒).
8
this, I did all the things other kids did when I was growing up.
I didn't
9
how short I was until I started school. Some kids picked on me, calling me names(辱骂我). Then I knew. I began to
10
the first day of school each year. New students would always stare at me as I
11
to climb the school bus stairs.
But I learned to smile and
12
the fact that I was going to be
13
my whole life. I decided to make my uniqueness an advantage rather than a disadvantage. What I lacked in height, I
14
in personality.
I'm 47 now, and the stares have not
15
as I've grown older. People are
16
when they see me driving. I try to keep a good attitude. When people are
17
, I remind myself: "Look what else I have -a great family, nice friends."
It's the children's questions that make my life
18
. I enjoy answering their questions. My
19
is that, I will encourage them to accept their peers(同龄人), whatever size and shape they come in, and treat them with

An old friend from abroad(国外)
1
I wanted to stay with telephoned me from the airport to tell me that he had arrived. I was still in the
2
, but I had done something to get ready for his coming. After explaining where my new room was, I told him
3
I had left the key under the doormat(门垫).
4
I would be home rather
5
, I asked him to go into the kitchen and
6
himself to some food and drink.
Two hours later, my friend telephoned me from the

11
some

chicken from the refrigerator. Now, he said, he was drinking a glass of milk
13
he hoped I would

him. When I asked him if he had
15
the room without
16
, he answered that he had
17
been able to find the key under the doormat. As the living-room window just
18
the apple tree had been left
19
, he had climbed in. I listened to all this in
20
. There in no apple tree in front of my living-room. There is one in front of my neighbor’s.

I used to live in a separate room. I loved living
1
. But one day it all changed when my brother Mike asked to
2
my room. At first, my parents said “no” to him, but at last my mother
3
. I cried and begged my parents not to do this,
4
it didn’t work.
As soon as Mike entered my room, my room began to become
5
. To my anger, he often left his unwashed clothes everywhere!
One evening, I was doing my homework on my computer while Mike was listening to music. Later, I left my
6
to get some water. A shock was
7
me when I returned. He had used my computer to play games. I had
8
to save the homework. Sadly, he closed the program
9
saving it--- all my effort had disappeared! I shouted at him at the top of my
10
. He cried a lot as my mother
11
him. My mother also asked him to leave my room
12
.
Then I did my homework once again. At 11:00PM, I
13
it. I was about to turn off my computer when I saw the
14
of my brother that he had put on my table. I looked at his lovely face and remembered how he was crying when my mom punished him. I really felt
15
for him.
I went to him. He was
16
in my parents’ bed. I kissed his forehead. He woke up,
17
and said, “I’m sorry, I won’t bring you
18
again.”
I was so
19
and I hugged him, saying, “From now on, my room is not only

. It is ours!”

A Shelter for the Homeless
Last summer I was a volunteer (志愿者) at a shelter for the homeless, a place for homeless people to sleep at night. I wasn’t working that summer and was
1
only two classes in summer school, so I had some
2
time.
Three nights a week, I
3
in the kitchen of the shelter along with four other volunteers. We planned and
4
for 45 people hot meals
5
vegetables, chicken, fish and fruit. The homeless people
6
this good food because many of them usually didn’t eat well.
I
7
this volunteer work, making
8
with the four volunteers in the kitchen. One was a very nice elderly housewife, one a movie actor, another a young teacher, and the other a college student,

I talked to a lot of the homeless people at the shelter. Their life stories

she lost her job. She looked for a

Passing Your Love On
Waiting for the airplane to take off, I was happy to get a seat by myself. Just then, an air hostess approached me and asked, “Would you mind
1
your seat? A couple would like to sit together.” The only
2
seat was next to a girl with her arms in casts(石膏绷带), a black-and-blue face, and a sad
3
. “No way am I going to sit there,” I thought immediately. But a soft voice spoke, “She needs help.” Finally, I
4
to move to that seat.
The girl was named Kathy. She had been in a car accident and
5
was on her way for
6
.
When the snack and juice arrived, it did not take me long to
7
that Kathy would not be able to
8
herself. I considered
9
to feed her but hesitated, as it seemed too
10
to offer a service to a
11
. But then I realized that Kathy’s need was more
12
than my discomfort. I offered to help her eat, and
13
she was uncomfortable to accept, she
14
as I expected. We became closer and closer in a short period of time. By the end of the five-hour trip, my heart had
15
, and the time was really
16
spent than if I had just sat by myself.
I was very glad I had reached
17
my comfort zone to sit next to Kathy and feed her. Love
18
flows beyond human borders and removes the fears that keep us
19
. When we stretch to serve another, we grow to live
20
a larger and more rewarding world.

Nearly two decades has passed, I still remember my favourite professor, James Sehwartz. Whenever he smiles, it’s as if you’d just been told the funniest joke on earth. Almost all his students are his friends, and almost all his students know his life story.
When James was a teenager, his father
1
him to a fur factory where he worked . This was during the Great Depression. The
2
was to get James a job.
James entered the factory, and immediately felt as if the
3
had closed in around him. The room was dark and hot, the windows covered with dust, and the
4
were packed tightly together, running like trains. The fur hairs were flying,
5
a thickened air, and the workers,
6
the pieces of fur together, were bent over their needles
7
the boss marched up and down the rows, searching for them to go faster .James could hardly
8
. He stood next to his father, frozen with fear, hoping the boss wouldn’t
9
at him, too.
During lunch break, his father took James to the boss and pushed him in front of him,
10
if there was any work for his son. But
11
there was hardly enough
12
for the adult labours, for no one would give it up once he took a job.
Thus, for James, it was a
13
. He hated the place. He made a
14
that he kept to the end of his life: he would never do any work that brought
15
to someone else, and he would never allow himself to
16
money off the seat of others.
“What will you do?” his mother, Eva, would ask him.
“I don’t know,” he
17
say. He ruled out law, because he didn’t like
18
, and he ruled out medicine, because he couldn’t take the
19
of blood.
“What will you do?”
20
, my best professor I ever had became—he thought it was the job not to hurt anybody.
