It is well known that Albert Einstein was one of the greatest scientists of all time, but I think he was also a really great person. I’ve done some research on him and
1
something interesting.
When Einstein started to work in America, someone asked him what he needed. He said he needed a desk, some
2
and a pencil. He also asked for a big wastepaper basket to
3
all of his mistakes. This shows that he knew even the
4
man in the world can only learn by making mistakes.
Einstein was also very modest(谦虚的). Many children wrote letters to ask him for help with their homework. One day, he wrote a letter to a young girl to tell her not to
5
about her maths homework because he thought maths was difficult too.
Einstein regarded time as very valuable. He never wore socks, because he thought
6
socks was a waste of time as people already wore
7
. He also thought it was a waste of time remembering things that could be found in a book. That’s
8
he never remembered his own phone number, which was in the phone book. He knew what was worth
9
. It is true that if we are going to do
10
things in our lives, we can’t waste time.

Many years ago I drove a taxi for extra money. I drove mainly from the downtown to the
1
, beside the Greenwood Racetrack which was in operation at that time.
Each time a taxi drove up to the station, many kids would run along the
2
to the passenger door. One
3
kid would open the passenger door and say, “
4
, sir.” The passenger would always say thanks and give the kid a
5
on his way from the taxi to the entrance of the track. It was a routine that everybody knew.
One day I noticed a boy, who was
6
than most of them but was pushed away by even the smallest kid. He never pushed back.
7
, he would even step aside when others pushed forward. But he never
8
.
Then one morning as I was
9
to the sidewalk, all the other kids were running after a taxi
10
mine. They didn’t notice mine.
The boy saw me and walked toward my taxi. As I pulled up I made sure that I stopped in a
11
with the passenger door right beside him. He
12
the passenger door with a flourish(夸张动作) and said, “Good luck at the track, sir.”
13
, the man did not tip him a quarter. Instead he
14
, “Get out of my way!” He pushed him aside so
15
that the boy fell on the sidewalk and I knew he was badly hurt. I got out of my car quickly
16
find that the man disappeared in the crowd.
So I looked for the kid. I decided to give him $20 for all his
17
. But he was far up ahead, walking out of the station
18
. The traffic policeman waved at me to get my car going.
19
, I never saw him again. I’d like to find him one day and tell him that if only he had stuck around a little longer I would have given him a whole $20.
I learned an important lesson from the boy. When things seem so
20
that you are ready to give up, that is the time when things are most likely to turn around for you.

I went to my favorite restaurant one evening to have supper. I knew the owner very well.
1
I was waiting for the soup to arrive, I looked around to see if I knew anyone in the restaurant. It was
2
that I noticed a man sitting at the corner table
3
watching in my direction, as if he knew me. The man had a newspaper open
4
him, which he was
5
to read, though all the while I could see that he was keeping an eye on me. When the waiter brought the soup, the man was clearly
6
by the familiar way in which the waiter and I talked to each other. He became even more puzzled as time went on and it grew more and more obvious that I was well
7
in the restaurant. In the end he got up and went to the kitchen. After a few minutes he came
8
again, paid his bill and left without
9
looking in my direction.
When I finished and was
10
to pay my bill, I called the owner over and
11
him what the man had wanted. The owner at
12
didn’t want to tell me. I
13
“Well”, he said “ that man was a detective.” “
14
?” I said, much surprised. “he followed you here because he
15
you were the man he was looking for,” the owner said. “He showed me a photo of the
16
man. He certainly looked
17
you! Of course since we know you here. I was able to make him
18
that he had made a mistake.” “It’s
19
I came to a restaurant where I’m where I’m known,” I said, “otherwise I
20
have been taken to police station!”

It was Lin Tao’s first visit to England. He was looking
1
to his first journey on London’s Underground Railway. Against
2
of his friends he decided to go alone.
He
3
the station shortly after five o’clock in the afternoon. This is a
4
time to travel in London because too many people go home
5
work at this hour. He had to join a long line of people
6
were waiting for tickets. When
7
his turn came, he had some difficulty in making himself understood by the man

tickets. However, he got the right
9
in the end and by asking people the
10
he also found the right platform. It was crowed with people. He did not manage to get on the first train,
11
he was able to move nearer the edge of the platform so as to be in a better position to
12
the next one.
When this train came in, Lin Tao was swept forward on to the train by the rush of people from behind. The doors
13
and the train moved off. He was
14
to see the names of the stations
15
the train stopped, but he knew that the station he wanted was the sixth stop along the line. When the train reached the sixth station, Lin Tao got off,
16
glad that his journey had been so easy. But he suddenly
17
that he had come to a station he
18
! He explained his difficulty to a man standing on the platform. With a smile
19
his face, the man told Lin Tao that he
20
a train going in the opposite direction. The train had come to a small town, the name of which sounded very strange.

In the past, man did not have to think about the protection of his environment. There were few people on the earth, and natural
1
seemed to be unlimited.
Today things are
2
. The world has become too
3
. We are
4
our natural resources too quickly, and at the same time we are
5
our environment with dangerous chemicals. If we
6
to do this, human life on earth will not
7
.
People realize today that if too many
8
are taken from the sea, there will soon be none left. Yet, with modern fishing
9
, more and more fish are caught.
We know that if too many trees are cut down,
10
will disappear and nothing will
11
on the land. Yet, we continue to use bigger and more powerful machines to
12
more and more trees.
We realize that if rivers are polluted with waste products from factories, we will die.
13
, in most countries waste products are still put into rivers or into the sea, and there are few laws to
14
this.
We also know that if the
15
of the world continues to rise at the present rate, in a few years, there won't be enough food. What can we do to solve the
16
? If we eat more vegetables and less
17
, there will be more food available for everyone. Land that is used to grow crops feeds five times more people than land where animals are kept.
Our natural resources will
18
longer if we learn to recycle them. The world population will not
19
so quickly if people use modern methods of birth control.
Finally, if we
20
people to think about the problems we shall have a better and cleaner planet in the future.

When I was a small child, during the war, we were very poor and we lived in a faraway village. One day, on the road, I found the
1
pieces of a mirror. There was a Garman motorcycle accident.
I tried to find all the pieces and put them
2
, but it was not possible, so I kept only the
3
piece and I made it round. I could
4
with it as a toy and became greatly attracted by the
5
that I could reflect(反射)light to dark places where the sun would never shine—in
6
holes and some other dark places. It became a

for me to get light into the darkest places I could find.
I

, I grew to understand that this was not

a child’s game but a metaphor(象征)for what I might do with my life. I came to
13
that I am not the light or the source of light. But light—truth, understanding, knowledge—is
14
, and it will shine in many dark places only if I reflect it.
I am just a single piece of a mirror whose
15
design and shape I do not know.
16
, with what I have I can reflect light into the dark places of this
17
—into the black places in the
18
of men—and change some things
19
some people. Perhaps others may see and do the same. This is what I am about. This is the

of my life.

Not many foreigners can say that they have lived in China for as long as I have. Perhaps some can hack(应对) it for about two or three years and then they want to either go back home or move on to another country. As for me, I cannot get
1
of this place. I love it here so much and I honestly believe that I am very comfortable here. It feels just like
2
. And, here
3
the story.
It was August 2001 and I had just said
4
to my family and friends as I
5
to Los Angeles International Airport to catch my
6
to Incheon, South Korea which would then
7
me to Beijing. When I arrived in LA I was very excited and a little
8
because I didn't know what to
9
when I arrived in China. It
10
like receiving a wrapped gift and you had no idea what was in it
11
you opened it. As I
12
the Korean Airlines
13
desk I gave the attendant(空乘人员) my ticket. He looked at me and said, "I'm sorry, sir. This flight was yesterday." I was in
14
and lost for words. The attendant told me I had to wait several hours until they could
15
whether I could get onto another flight.
I was so afraid at this time that I called my mother and frantically(狂乱地) told her," I missed my flight! I don't think I can go to
16
! I'm better off going back to Washington, DC!" That's when she
17
I call my leader in China and ask whether I could still go there. Looking
18
all of the papers I found a phone number and called the Beijing office.
19
, my leader was there and assured me I could still join the group. Also, KAL had a seat for me on the next flight. So, after 24 hours and a
20
in Korea, I arrived in Beijing. I don't know what my feeling was, but I wasn't tired because I had finally arrived and I just wanted to look around the city. As I traveled to the hotel in the car I saw all the wonderful buildings, friendly people and interesting sites. I was so happy to be here.

It was Christmas Eve, but I had to work in the clinic. The only thing that
1
my day was the beautiful Christmas tree in our waiting room and a
2
sent to me by my boyfriend — a dozen red roses.
As I was cleaning my desk, I was told that a
3
in the office urgently needed to speak with me. Stepping out, I
4
a tired-looking woman with a baby in her arms.
5
, she explained that her husband was my next
6
. The guards were to bring him to the office that afternoon. She wasn’t allowed to visit her husband in
7
, so he had never seen his son. She
8
me to let the boy’s father sit in the waiting room with her as
9
as possible before I called him for his appointment. I agreed.
A short time later, her husband arrived. The woman’s tired face
10
when her husband sat beside her. They laughed, cried and shared their child.
After almost an hour, I called the prisoner in. He seemed like a
11
and humble man. I
12
what he possibly could have done to be held under such conditions. I tried to make him comfortable.
Finally, I wished him a Merry Christmas—a(n)
13
thing to say to a man headed back to prison. He smiled and thanked me. He also said sadly that he couldn’t get his wife anything for Christmas. Hearing this, I was
14
with a wonderful idea.
I’11 never forget the
15
on both their faces as the prisoner gave his wife the beautiful roses.

Once there was a very brilliant, creative and educated man. He gained much
1
while traveling throughout the world. Unfortunately he lost his legs and left arm in a tragic accident, leaving only a finger and thumb on his right hand. He became so
2
that he was afraid he would spend his life
3
and would no longer be able to use his life in a(n)
4
way.
One day, he remembered how he had always loved getting
5
. He realized that he still had partial
6
of his right hand and could write with
7
. Then, he had an idea. “Why not write to other people who need encouragement?”
He

. Many of them had hope of regaining their
10
. Others would keep feeling depressed and remain put away for the rest of their lives. He decided that he must try to
11
them. So he wrote to a prison ministry about sending letters to the prisoners. The prison minister replied that writing to the prisoners would be
12
. However, it would be against prison rules for the prisoners to write back.
13
with the intention, the man began sending
14
messages of God’s love, hope, strength, and encouragement. He wrote twice a week,
15
his strength and ability to the limit. He poured his heart and soul into his words,
16
his experience, sense of humor, optimism, and faith.
It was difficult to write those letters, especially without hope of any
17
. Frequently, he felt discouraged, wondering if anyone
18
read his letters. However, this was his
19
chance,so he determined to continue.
At last, he received a letter from the prison officer, which said, “Please write on the best paper you can afford. Your letters are passed from cell (牢房) to cell until they almost fall to
20
!”
We all have unique experiences, abilities and talents. We can discover ways to reach others in need of encouragement and strength.

Sometimes your biggest weakness can become your biggest strength. Here is the story of one 10-year-old boy who decided to study judo (柔道)
1
the fact that he had lost his left arm in a car accident.
The boy began
2
with an old Japanese judo the sensei (师傅). The boy was
3
well, but he couldn’t understand
4
, after three months of training the sensei had taught him only one move.
“but this is the only move you’11 ever
5
to know,” the sensei told him.
Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy
6
training.
Several months later, the sensei took the boy to his first tournament (循环赛).
7
himself, the boy easily won his
8
two matches. The third match proved to be more
9
, but after some time, the boy
10
used his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the
11
.
This time, his competition was bigger, stronger, and more
12
. Concerned that the boy might get hurt, the judge called a time-out. He was about to
13
the match when the sensei intervened (阻止).
“No,” the sensei
14
, “Let him continue.” Soon after the match started again, his competitor made a
15
mistake: he dropped his guard. Instantly, the boy used his
16
to attack him. The boy had won the match and the tournament.
On the way home, the boy summoned(鼓起) the
17
to ask the sensei how he could win the tournament with only one move.
“You won
18
two reasons,” the sensei answered. “First, you’ve almost learned one of the most difficult
19
in all of judo. And second, the only known defense for that move is for your competitor to grab your
20
arm.”
