【题目】Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.

During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the morning. For others, it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues(独白)as: “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.

You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleiman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but you must stay up late anyway. Counteract(打破)your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point.

Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the trouble of searching for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharp hours.

1If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably ________.

A. he is a lazy person

B. he refuses to follow his own energy cycle

C. he is not sure when his energy is low

D. he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening

2You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will ________.

A. help to keep your energy for the day’s work

B. help you to control your temper early in the day

C. enable you to concentrate on your routine work

D. keep your energy cycle under control all day

3What should one do if he wants to work more efficiently at his low point in the morning?

A. He should change his energy cycle.

B. He should overcome his laziness.

C. He should get up earlier than usual.

D. He should go to bed earlier.

【题目】I left home to support my sister in her efforts to present a music festival. She lives on the other side of the world, and I went to visit her, not wanting to leave and feeling like I was leaving home against my will. However, I wanted to show her my support because she is my only sister.

So I boarded the plane in mid-August, and hated the long flight. I arrived, tired and hungry. I had left my husband of 2 years, alone, in our old New Orleans house.

I was all set and ready to perform for my sister for the music festival on Sunday morning when I received a call from Chicago. The hurricane was predicted to hit our city, and many people had already evacuated, but my husband chose to stay behind. He could not get a call to me on the other side of the world, but he could call his cousin in Chicago. He gave his cousin a message for me, that he would be just fine, and not to worry.

As the day wore on, I finally took the stage in front of hundreds of Europeans, and I realized, thanks to CNN, that New Orleans was under water.

I performed, hoping that my husband would survive. And I performed perfectly. The audience stood and applauded. I left the stage and went straight to the TV. I saw the street sign near my home, of Humanity Street, but nothing below it, except water.

In the days that followed, I found out that my house, my car, my clothes, my furniture, everything that I’d left behind was gone…but not my husband. He survived by riding on the rear bumper(后保险杠)of a VW bus, holding on to the overhead luggage rack, in the pouring rain, down the highway from New Orleans, half-way to Baton Rouge. The rest of the journey was a long walk, but he survived.

By the first week of September, I flew back to the Baton Rouge airport, and hugged my husband. Since then, our relationship has grown deeper; we have completely rebuilt our house, bought a new car, bought new furniture and new clothes and joined an inspirational, spirit-filled community.

1Why did the author leave home?

A. To look after her sister. B. To attend a music festival.

C. To watch a performance. D. To visit her husband’s cousin.

2How did the author feel when she left home?

A. Disappointed. B. Worried.

C. Tired. D. Unwilling.

3What does the underlined word “evacuated” mean?

A. Gathered. B. Struggled.

C. Escaped. D. Hid.

4What might be the title for the passage?

A. Lost it All, Gained Even More. B. Once Gone, Never Returned.

C. Caught in the Hurricane. D. Trapped in a Dilemma.

Develop Better Relationships with Neighbors
Good neighbors are a lot like electricity or running water:we don't know how much we depend on them until we don't have them. They make our lives more pleasant and give us a sense of who we wrte, both as an individual and as a member of the community. Here is how to develop your relationships with these very important people in your life.
Often neighbors don't even know each other's names. But it's okay to be the one to break the ice , even if you've lived next door for years. Most neighbors enjoy making small talk with the folks on the other side of the fence. So as you see them at work in their yards, smile, wave, and say hello. Ask how their kids are (whether they're babies or in college), whether they could use an extra cucumber from your garden, or what they think of the price at the local supermarket.
These days, the old Welcome Wagon is a thing of the past. But your new neighbors may be feeling lonely and unsure, especially if they're far from home, and might appreciate a friendly face bearing fresh-baked chocolate cakes. If they have kids, tell them where the children in the neighborhood live. Recommend the best places to eat and sleep. Invite them over for coffee or tea when they get settled, give them your number, and point to your house as you say good-bye.
Return anything that you borrow from a neighbor, such as tools, in good repair and as soon as you've finished with them. Replace anything that belongs to your neighbor that you, your children, or your pets break or soil. Make sure that your car is not blocking their doorway. Such random acts of consideration will have your neighbors talking—and the talk will be good.
If you value a friendship with your neighbors, spend time with them. What better way to meet your neighbors than to invite them to an informal barbecue, pool party, or holiday open house? Better yet, you might even consider throwing a get-together in their honor. Deliver the invitations in person to everyone who lives on your street and chat with each for five minutes before moving on to the next house. This way, you will get an idea of what your neighbors are like so that you can plan for appropriate food and music.
In a good relationship, it's really the little things that count. Help to bring in the mail for the elderly neighbor when there is a heavy rain. When your neighbor gorgets to take in his rubbish cans, roll them back into his yard. If you're truly concerned, you'll know when your neighbor needs some cheering up—a bunch of flowers or a helping hand when it's needed. All it takes to develop your relationship with neighbors is the respect for their feelings.

【题目】Traditions are different from culture to culture. Something that sounds rude in one country may be the most polite thing to do in another. 1

Spitting

People think spitting on or at someone is one of the worst behaviors, and the police even consider it is a kind of attack. 2 When polite children pass by, their elders usually spit at them. Of course, they do this with best wishes. They wish children to live a long life. They also spit on any gift they are about to give. When they move into a new home, they first go outside and spit in the four directions

Flowers

Flowers are usually sent when people have parties, visit friends, thank others and so on.

3 In Germany and France, people use carnations (康乃馨) to decorate tombs. Yellow flowers represent hate in Russia and Iran, and purple flowers are bad luck in Italy and Brazil.

4 In France and Armenia, an even number (偶数) of flowers is for happiness and odd numbers are for sadness

Cleaning Your Plate

When we were young, our parents always told us to clean our plate and not to waste food.

5 In the Philippines, North Africa, and some areas of China, the host will put more food on a plate once it is clean. Only when a guest leaves a little bit of food on his plate, the host will think he is full. Or a clean plate means the guest can’t get good service.

To do the right thing, when we are in other places, we’d better respect and follow the traditions, even though we think they are strange.

A. Here lists some of them.

B. Even the number of flowers can be rude.

C. But sometimes it’s rude to give flowers.

D. There are a lot of ways to experience other cultures.

E. However, in some countries, a clean plate may make trouble for the host.

F. But in Africa, the members of the Maasai have a different way of seeing things.

G. Whether you’re indoors or outdoors, it’s rude to spit on the ground where someone might be walking.
