All of us can give others a hand as long as we are willing to do so. Actually, there are some people doing kind things all the time. Spreading kindness, one good deed at a time, is Karla Gibson’s mission. “I wish everyone could join me. There are so many 1 things going on in the world; I mean every day,” said Karla.
Karla had the 2 and sense of duty in December of 2013. The single mother of three said she tended to get down around the holidays, so she 3 to do something to cheer others up. She started a Facebook page and 4 her good deeds each day, from feeding the homeless to giving Easter gifts to the incarcerated (囚犯). She hoped to 5 others.
“We have to do something. Our 6 can make a difference in someone’s day. You 7 know when someone might be having their worst day, and then something like buying them a coffee can change their whole attitude,” Karla 8 .
Karla’s greatest 9 so far had to do with coffee. On September 27th, Karla’s birthday, she went to her local Starbucks and gave the 10 $127 to pay for other people’s drinks. She sat at the end of the drive-thru holding a 11 that read, “Have a great day.” She ended up 12 about 23 customers. “It was really fun. It was 13 one of the best birthdays ever,” she said. Her kindness that day didn’t go 14 . One couple was so grateful that they surprised her with flowers and balloons to show their 15.
Karla’s acts of kindness have become a 16 affair. Her two sons are always 17 others. “Sometimes I’ll ask Kyle, ‘So, did you do anything extra nice today?’ and he’s like ‘Somebody 18 something in the hallway and I picked it up’ or ‘I held the door for someone’, that kind of thing,” said Karla.
It’s because of Mom that the boys think it’s 19 to give a hand to others. “I think it’s a great idea of hers. It’s always nice to help someone out 20 they really need it,” said Karla’s 15-year-old son Chad.

【题目】House Sitting

In many countries of the world people do what is called house sitting. It means that if owners of the house are going away, they want someone to come into their home and look after the house and maybe pets while they are away.

In Australia, many people travel. After people retire, they might buy a van and travel all over the country. 1

So if someone wants to travel or go away for some reason, they might want someone in their home to care for it and keep the gardens tidy. House sitters might have to care for pets. Also, quite a few people have swimming pools in their back yard and they need cleaning. 2 I feel it is a great way of seeing the country, because you go and stay in a new city, get to meet new people, and have time to go sightseeing in a new area.

3 There are websites where you find the advertisements by people who want to travel, and by replying to the advertisement, you can make arrangements to go and look after their home.

There are some requirements to be a house sitter. You must be a trusted person, so that the home owner knows you will not steal anything. You must be able to go when the house owner wants you to go, so you need lots of free time. 4 You need to be good with pets, able to care for cats and dogs, or other pets they may have.

It is also possible to do house sitting in other countries. 5 One of the important things to get is references from the home owners where you have stayed. A reference is a written letter to say that you are trustworthy and have looked after their home well. You can show these letters to possible house sitting jobs and they know you will do a good job.

A. Thousands of people do this all the time.

B. I have done house sitting for many times.

C. Generally you have many chances to get a house sitting job.

D. Then you can travel to many different countries and stay there.

E. You must take a little care over what your description says about you.

F. This is an international house sitting service for all city and country areas.

G. You must have a good car, so you can travel to different parts of the country.

A Dutch artist and designer has come upwith a device which he hopes will get rid of pollutants from Beijing's smogskies, creating clean air for the city's mask-wearing people.
An electromagnetic field(电磁场) will pullparticles(微粒) in the smogto the ground where they can be easily cleaned.
“It's like when you have a balloon which has static(静电) and your hairgoes toward it. Same with the smog,” says artist Daan Roosegaarde.
His studio has reached an agreement with the Beijing governmentto test the technology in one of tile capital's parks.
With its skies regularly covered by dirty gray smog, Beijingthis week announced a series of emergency measures to handle the problem.
Roosegaarde says an indoor model device has already proven itworks and is confident that the results — with the help of a team of scientistsand engineers — can be replicated outside.
“Beijing is quite a good place because the smog in Beijing isquite low. It lies in a valley so there's not so much wind. It's a goodenvironment to explore this kind of thing.”
“We'll be able to purify the air and the challenge is to get thetop of the smog so you can see the sun again.”
Roosegaarde acknowledges that projects like this are a way ofdrawing attention to the problem, rather than a practical solution to Beijing'sawful air pollution.
“This is not the real answer for smog. The real answer has to dowith clean cars, different industry and different lifestyles.”
However, he hopes the project will make a “fundamentalstatement” by allowing the city's people to realize the difference between breathingclean and smog-filled air.
(1)The device works by _______.
A.helping keep the particles out with more masks
B.pulling pollutants to the ground with an electromagnetic field
C.absorbing hair with a balloon with static
D.creating clean air and let it out into the sky
(2)According to the passage, ______ .
A.the Beijing government has agreed to use the technology in Beijing
B.they have proven the results of the device both indoors and outdoors
C.the results of the air-cleaning device can be expectable
D.the Beijing government has never done anything to handle the air pollution
(3)What does Roosegaarde really mean by saying “Beijing is quite a good place…... ”?
A.The air pollution in Beijing is not quite serious.
B.The weather in Beijing is good for foreigners to live in.
C.Beijing is quite fit for using the air-cleaning device.
D.It is easy to get the top of the smog in Beijing.
(4)Roosegaarde appeals to people in Beijing to ________.
A.pay attention to air pollution and solve the problem finally
B.invent more devices to clean the smog in Beijing
C.drive modern cars and try different lifestyles
D.realize how serious the pollution they're facing is
