9.In 2012,I had just recovered from a serious illness when I received an invitation to a writer's conference in Orlando,Florida. My family and friends persuaded me that a holiday might be just what the doctor ordered. So off I went.
Arriving in the Sunshine State was not easy, but I managed to catch a taxi to the hotel. The next morning,I caught another taxi to do some shopping.Later I went to a café to buy some lunch, but having my sandwich and drink in my hand,I saw that all the tables were occupied (占用).Then I heard a friendly voice saying,"You can share my table."
I thankfully sat down with the smiling elderly lady and we shared a happy lunch together. As the meal drew to a close she asked how long I would be in Orlando.I had already told her that I hadn't hired (租用) a car,and hadn't realized how costly taking taxis would be.After a while she said,"My dear, don't use any more taxis. It would be my pleasure to drive you wherever you wish."
I told her that I couldn't put her to that trouble, but she insisted. She took details of where I was staying and the next morning she drove me to Disney World. She took me through the park's gates and spent some time with me before leaving me to explore alone. At the end of the day,she returned to take me back to my hotel. The next few days, she drove me around Orlando's tourist areas.I offered her money but she refused to take any.
When we had lunch on my last day,I thanked her for her kindness.I'll never forget that wonderful lady who filled my holiday in Florida with wonderful memories.

8.When you are away from home, eating is more than just a way to keep your stomach full.Sharing a meal with others is a kind of communication. There is no better way to say,"Glad to meet you…glad to be doing business with you…"
Clearly, mealtime is not the time for you to say"Thanks, but no thanks."Just consider:What would people in the United States think of a foreign visitor who didn't want to try a bit of homemade apple pie? When you are in a foreign country, saying yes to the food on your plate is important. It means that you accept the host, the country, and the company. That's why most experienced travelers try to eat everything everywhere, even though the dish looks strange.
We often feel uncomfortable with food that we are unfamiliar with. However, food that seems strange in one culture may be a favorite food in another.South China, for instance, there are many restaurants that make dishes from snakes.Sheep's eyeballs may be unfamiliar in some parts of the world, but in Saudi Arabia, they are a choice food.In parts of Colombia, roasted ants are.
Can you refuse such food without being rude? Most experienced business travelers say no.You should at least try a bit of it.It helps, though,to cut things into very thin pieces. This way,you won't notice the appearance or remember where it came from.Or,"swallow(咽下) it quickly,"as one traveler advises."I still can't tell you what roasted ants taste like."
Another useful piece of advice is this:It's better if you don't know what you are eating.Don't ask what's for dinner.Avoid looking at the kitchen or looking at restaurant menus.Your host will be very happy because you are eating the food that he or she offers.

Lucy Collins,34,from Liverpool
I've always finished all my shopping by the middle of August.I buy when things are cheap and when I can afford to.I also enjoy trying to buy as many gifts as possible at less than the full price. This year,I've spent£230 and saved£695 on the prices.

3.The baby is just one day old and has not yet left hospital. She is quiet but alert (警觉).Twenty centimeters from her face researchers have placed a white card with two black spots on it.She stares at it carefully.A researcher removes the card and replaces it by another, this time with the spots differently spaced. As the cards change from one to the other, her gaze(凝视) starts to lose its focus-until a third, with three black spots,is presented. Her gaze returns:she looks at it for twice as long as she did at the previous card. Can she tell that the number two is different from three, just 24 hours after coming into the world?
Or do newborns simply prefer more to fewer? The same experiment, but with three spots shown before two, shows the same return of interest when the number of spots changes.Perhaps it is just the newness? When slightly older babies were shown cards with pictures of objects (a comb,a key,an orange and so on),changing the number of objects had an effect separate from changing the objects themselves.Could it be the pattern that two things make,as opposed to three? No again.Babies paid more attention to squares moving randomly on a screen when their number changed from two to three,or three to two.The effect even crosses between senses.Babies who were repeatedly shown two spots became more excited when they then heard three drumbeats than when they heard just two; likewise (同样地) when the researchers started with drumbeats and moved to spots.

1.Before I studied psychology(心理学),I used to think that people would laugh when funny things happened. While I was right about that,I discovered there are lots of other psychological factors that make people laugh other than the funny part of a joke. When someone laughs at a joke, there will usually be more than one reason that makes him laugh-and the more reasons there are,the more powerful the joke will be.
I was attending a stand-up comedy show in Egypt, and when the man started to make fun of pedestrians(person walking in the street) crossing streets, everyone laughed their hearts out.The main reason those people strongly laughed was that almost all of them felt angry towards pedestrians who crossed streets carelessly. The joke wasn't only funny,it also made the audience feel that they were right about being angry at those pedestrians. That is,people were laughing both because of the funny joke and because of the happiness experienced as a result of the psychological support they got.
The better a joke makes a person feel, and the more it includes other psychological factors, the more the person will like it.For example,if you envy one of your friends, and someone tells a joke that is funny and,at the same time, makes  your friend seem stupid, then you will probably laugh at it louder than if you weren't jealous of him.
In short,we don't laugh only when we hear something funny; we also laugh when we experience some kind of happiness that results from the other psychological factors involved in the joke.I strongly discourage making fun of anyone or belittling  someone to make someone else laugh. All I want to explain is that if your joke supports a person's emotions,he will certainly like it a lot.
