15.There is no doubt about it.The best way to learn new words is to do it unconsciously.I don't mean while you're unconscious.I mean while you are unconscious of the fact that it is sinking in.
That is how I learnt the 30,000 words in my vocabulary by living in an English-speaking world, mother tongue.I just pick them up.But some of them may be misunderstood. Now,to misunderstand does not mean not to understand. To misunderstand is to understand but incorrectly.
The 5% mislearnt of all the words we"know"will be the least frequently used words,as the more frequently used words are less likely to be mislearnt. Some of the misunderstanding may live with all our lives, without knowing that we got them wrong.
Many English teachers think that this natural method of learning words in one's own mother tongue can be used for a second language learning. They teach their students how to play the Guessing Game."There is no time to look up in your dictionaries all the new words you come across,"they will say."You have to practice guessing what the word means from the context."
This method of guessing in a second language learning does not work.It may succeed in many cases, but results in hundreds or thousands of wrongly-guessed meanings of words.
And what's more, there are more separate meanings than there are words themselves. Our learners'dictionaries usually have many meanings.A good dictionary is what makes self-learning possible.
Don't guess!Look it up!

14.I walk into a room and wonder who's going to talk to me.Unavoidably,I fall into a self-conscious moment.
I'm waiting for my daughters to finish a gymnastics class,and I look around the waiting room.The lively chatter of mothers all around me makes me feel terribly alone.I don't belong in this group; I'm an outsider to the world of little girls trying to finish their homework before the coach calls them in.
Nobody is paying attention to me!
Sulking in pity,I overhear a little girl ask her mother the difference between a homophone and a homonym.
My specialty!I can't resist such questions.I have to assist.For the next 5minutes,I find myself helping a 4th grader think of words that sound the same but are spelled differently (homophone) and words that sound the same and are spelled the same but mean different things (homonym).
You can't help somebody else and also think about how neglected you feel.It's a strange phenomenon.It doesn't matter that I'm supremely out of place here.I'm serving somebody,and then,everything feels right.And in a powerful turn of events,the mother who once seemed so cliquish and perfect starts telling me about her life.Over homophones,I'm learning about a lifetime of heartbreak.
Each of those mothers might have their own story of loss.The room isn't what it seems; it's nothing like it sounds.Beneath the clique and chatter,there's somebody who needs attention.
Perhaps when I feel most alone,most forgotten,I need to look up,find a way to help and bless (even if it's through homophones),and stop focusing on myself.I want to enter a room,take my eyes off of myself,and find the one who needs help.

69.What does the author want to do the time she enters the waiting room?B

13.Every afternoon hundreds of thousands of youth fill Internet cafes,switch on a game console (游戏机),or otherwise sit down to enter fantasy worlds.I'm talking about video games.These games can be fun and exciting,but we need to look out when this pastime becomes an addiction.
Games are often quite exciting and dramatic,but they generally aren't very intellectual.We don't learn as much from them as we would only reading a book.Spending too much time playing them can take away our study time.We need to remember that we are students first.Nothing should ever get in the way of proper studying.
Video games can also be a bad effect on younger children who may be watching.Many video games are violent and the object in most of them is to kill the other player(s).This does not send the right message to the children who need to be told that violence is not acceptable and need to be taught how to deal with situations maturely.Even if we do need to sit down and play a violent video game,we need to make sure that it does not affect the younger people around us.
Playing a computer game in our spare time is not a bad thing.Games can be a great way to relax after studying,to connect to our friends,or just to help our creativity.However,games should not become the focus of our life.We need to make sure that playing games never interferes with our studies and that we aren't thinking about them all day.If we ever find ourselves playing them too much,we need to break the addiction.If that happens,we need to step away from the computer or television screen and learn to spend our time more productively.

60.The writer mainly tells the readersB.
A.to play computer games every afternoon

12.We find that bright children are rarely   held back  by mixed-ability teaching.On the contrary,both their knowledge and experience are enriched.We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming pupils.It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates.It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child.After all,it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!
Besides,it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability.This is only one aspect of their total personality.We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full,not just their academic ability.We also value personal qualities and social skills,and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning.
In our classrooms,we work in various ways.The pupils often work in groups:This gives them the opportunity to learn to co-operate,to share,and to develop leadership skills.They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think,to make decisions,to analyze and evaluate,and to communicate effectively.The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.
Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments,and they can do this at their own speed.They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate.We encourage our pupils to use the library,and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently.An advanced pupil can do advanced work:it does not matter what age the child is.We expect our pupils to do their best,not their least,and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.

C.argue for teaching bright and not-so-bright pupils in the same class
D.emphasize the importance of appropriate formal classroom teaching.
11.Many people would interpret"The American dream"as"living like an American"-a two-story house with a white picket fence; a family with two cars; and two children.
However, the economic situation is now affecting the American way of life for 4.4 million people living in the US,according to new census (人口普查) data."It's going to have a long-term impact and to say it's going to end is optimistic,"says Cheryl Russell, former editor-in-chief of American Demographics magazine."I'm more pessimistic that this is the new normal."
So what is the new normal?
*Marrying later. The average age of the first marriage has increased to 28.7 for men and 26.7 for women,up from 27.5 and 25.9 respectively in 2006.At the same time, fewer people are getting married. If the marriage rate had stayed the same as in 2006,there would have been about 4 million more married people in 2010.
*Fewer babies. There were 200,000 fewer births among women aged 20 to 34 in 2010 compared with two years before. This was despite the fact that the number of women of childbearing age had gone up by more than 1 million."The recession(衰退) is the likely cause,"says Kenneth Johnson, demographer at the University of New Hampshire's Carsey Institue,"Economic fertility (生育能力)"because women delay …in uncertain times.
*Breaking up is harder. The number of divorces has been falling for 25 years as people wait longer or choose to live together before they get married. There were about 65,000 fewer divorces in 2010 than in 2008,a 7 percent decrease.
*Crowd living.Unemployment is forcing more people to live together. The number of households where people lived with"other relatives"climbed from 6.7 percent in 2006 to 7.2 percent in 2010.
*Going public.Private school enrollment decreased from 13.6 percent in 2006 to 12.8 percent in 2010.
*Fewer cars. The percent age of households without a car rose to 9.1 percent against 8.8 percent in 2006.The percent-age of households with two or more cars fell from 58 percent to 57.1 percent.
*Driving solo. When people are not working, they don't carpool. The proportion of people aged 16 to 64 in employment dropped greatly in all but one of the 50 largest metropolitan (大城市的) areas. That has helped push the share of people driving to work alone from 76 percent in 2006 to 76.6 percent in 2010.Ride-sharing is down a full percentage point,to 9.7 percent.

D.Because the proportion of people aged 16-64 in unemployment dropped greatly.
10.Contrary to many people believe,highly intelligent children are not necessarily certain to achieve academic success.In fact,so-called gifted students may fail to do well because they are unusually smart.Ensuring that a gifted child reaches his or her potential requires an understanding of what can go wrong and how to satisfy the unusual learning requirements of extremely bright young people.
One common problem gifted kids face is that they,and those around them,place too much importance on being smart.Such an emphasis can encourage a belief that bright people do not have to work hard to do well.Although smart kids may not need to work hard in the lower grades,when the work is easy,they may struggle and perform poorly when the work gets harder because they do not make the effort to learn.If the academic achievement of highly intelligent children remains below average for an extended period,many teachers will fail to recognize their potential.As a result,such students may not get the encouragement they need,further depressing their desire to learn.They may fall far behind in their schoolwork and even develop behavior problems.
IQ is just one element among many in the recipe for success-Children develop well or struggle in school for a host of reason apart from IQ.These include motivation(积极性)and persistence,social competence,and the support of family,educators and friends.
Because highly gifted children solve the most varied thought problems faster and more thoroughly than those with more average talents do,they need additional intellectual stimulation while they wait for the rest of the kids to learn the basics.Two central approaches are used to satisfy the educational needs of such children:acceleration and enrichment.Acceleration means studying material that is part of the standard subjects for older students.Enrichment involves learning information that falls outside the usual subjects.
A child might skip one or more grades as a way of accelerating in school.But being with older children for the entire school day-and perhaps for grade-based extracurricular activities such as sports-can make a child feel inferior in every realm outside of academics.One very bright fourth-grader who had skipped two grades remained far ahead of his classmates intellectually,but as his classmates reached puberty(青春期),his social and other shortcomings became painfully apparent.While acceleration is not an option,or not a good one,enrichment can be.After all,school is not a race but an adventure in learning.As such,the goal is not finishing first but absorbing as much knowledge as possible in the time assigned.Thus,providing opportunities for a child to study topics outside the regular subjects can be at least as valuable as pushing him or her through the required material faster.

72.What is the basic reason for the low academic achievement of highly intelligent children?B
A.Teachers'failure to recognize their potential.
B.Too much emphasis on being intelligent.
C.Studying topics outside the regular subjects.
D.Lack of encouragement from teachers.
73.According to the passage,which of the following belongs to enrichment activities for talented children?C
A.Skipping one of more grades and studying together with older children.
B.Learning the same material in the standard subjects for older students.
C.Learning information that is not included in the regular subjects.
D.Learning how to read with fluency even in their pre-school days.
74.Which of the following statements do you think is true about the writer?A

9.The two-week vacation at the end of summer school ended yesterday.Kevin had gone nowhere during his vacation.He had the money,but he hated to travel alone.He used to take vacations with Gary,his youngest brother,but they had a big argument at the end of their last vacation.Each of them had spent the last three years waiting for the other to apologize.
Kevin did not feel good about being on non-speaking terms with his favorite brother.But he was not going to ask for forgiveness when,in his mind,this whole misunderstanding was his brother's fault.
So Kevin's summer vacation was spent in his own"back yard."As usual,he had planned to clean up his apartment.As usual,two weeks later his apartment looked just as it had two weeks before.
He did do one thing new and different during his vacation.There was a new coffee shop on Foothill Street.It served 25varieties of delicious coffee at reasonable prices,and the staff was genuinely friendly.The shop was air-conditioned at a slightly chilly temperature.About eight small round tables were inside.Outside were four bigger tables.Each had four white metal chairs around it,and several big umbrellas provided shade.Even on hot afternoons,there was usually a pleasant breeze.
Kevin visited the coffee shop four times during his vacation.He always sat at a table outside by himself and read the free daily paper.Each day he was there,he read most of the newspaper articles while he enjoyed two cups of coffee.
Between articles,he took breaks by watching the nearby traffic and pedestrians.The coffee shop was next to a huge parking lot.The lot was for customers of a grocery store,movie rental store,pharmacy,bank,and restaurant.Kevin considered his outdoor seat the perfect place for one of his favorite activities-people watching.
The coffee shop,with its excellent location and coffee,had helped make his vacation a pleasant one.But he knew in his heart,had his brother been there to join him just one day,his vacation would have been a perfect one.

8.Finding the right school for your child is a process.You will want to read about the school,talk to any friends who are involved in the school and,most important of all,visit the school.

There are scattered(零散的) openings available throughout the program due to attrition(学生流失).Once an opening occurs,students spend a day at ICS,part of which includes admission testing.

7.Anyone driving on Highway I between San  Francisco and Los Angeles recently may have,glimpsed a Toyota Prius with something curious-looking on the roof.Harder to notice was that the person at the wheel was not actually driving.The car is a project of Goole,which can drive themselves,using artificial intelligence software that can sense anything near the car and imitate the decisions made by a human driver.
Driverless cars are years from mass production, but technologists who have long dreamed of them believe that they can transform society as profoundly as the Internet has.
Robot drivers react faster than humans,have 360-degree perception and do not get distracted,sleepy or intoxicated,the engineers argue.They speak in terms of lives saved and injuries avoided-more than 37,000people died in car accidents in the United States in 2008.The engineers say the technology could double the capacity of roads by allowing cars to drive more safely while closer together.Because the robot cars would eventually be less likely to crash,they could be built lighter,reducing fuel consumption.But of course,to be truly safer,the cars must be far more reliable than,say,today's personal computers,which crash on occasion and are frequently infected.
The Google research program using artificial intelligence to revolutionize the automobile is proof that the company's ambitions reach beyond the search engine business.Yet Goole did not yet have a cheer plan to create a business from the experiments.
Under the current law,a human must be in control of a car at all times,but what does that mean if the hom ant is not really paying attention as the car erosses through a school zone,figuring that the robot is driving more safely than he would?And in the event of an accident,who would be liable-the person behind the wheel or the maker of the software?

6.In March 2012,researchers in the United States announce that they have developed the first wirelessly controlled device that can supply a drug directly into the body.A small chip is implanted under the skin.It contains the medicine,which it releases at preset(预先设定的)times.
The developers say the device could improve the lives of millions of people who take medicine for long-term illnesses.
A company called MicroCHIPS began developing the device about fifteen years ago.Last month,the company released the results of its first successful tests in humans.The tests took place in Denmark with seven women with osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis causes bones to become weak and break easily.The disorder is common among older people,especially women.Many patients have to give themselves daily injections of medicine.One type of treatment requires injections for two years.
Robert farra is the president of MicroCHIPS.He says many patients stop taking the medicine because of the pain and stress of the injections and that only twenty-five percent of the patients will go through the entire twenty-four months of treatment.
The microchip is a few centimeters long.It has small sections that each hold a single dose(剂量)of medicine.Mr.Farra says the device has to be programmed with the times to release the drug and that doctors will be able to reprogram the device from a computer or even a cell phone.
The seven women in the study were aged sixty-five to seventy.The researchers say the implants were just as effective as daily injections.And they say the dosage amounts were more exact than patients often give themselves.
The microchips in the study held only twenty doses of medicine.Mr.Farra and his team are now designing a version that could hold a full year's worth of medicine.
Robert Farra says,"The new version may take us two years, and then we may be required to do two additional trials, taking about four years before the device is available on the commercial scale."

71.Which of the following about the new device is right?D
A.It is of great use to all patients.
