Another person’s enthusiasm was what set me moving toward the success I have achieved. That person was my stepmother.

I was nine years old when she entered our home in rural Virginia. My father 1        me to her with these words: “I would like you to meet the fellow who is 2        for being the worst boy in this county and will probably start throwing rocks at you no 3        than tomorrow morning. ”

My stepmother walked over to me,4        my head slightly upward, and looked me right in the eye. Then she looked at my father and replied, “You are 5    . This is not the worst boy at all,6        the smartest one who hasn’t yet found an outlet for his enthusiasm. ”

That statement began a (n) 7      between us.  No one had ever called me smart. My family and neighbours had built me up in my 8        as a bad boy. My stepmother changed all that.

She changed many things. She 9        my father to go to a dental school, from which he graduated with honours. She moved our family into the countryside, where my father’s career could be more 10        and my brothers and I could be better 11    .

When I turned fourteen, she bought me a second-hand 12        and told me that she believed that I could become a writer. I knew her enthusiasm,I 13        it,and I saw how it had already improved our lives. I accepted her 14        and began to write for local newspapers. I was doing the same kind of 15        that great day I went to interview Andrew Carnegie and received the task which became my life’s work later. I wasn’t the 16        beneficiary (受益者).My father became the 17        man in town. My brothers and stepbrothers became a physician,a dentist,a lawyer, and a college president.

What power 18        has! When that power is released to support the certainty of one’s purpose and is 19        strengthened by faith,it becomes an irresistible force which poverty and temporary defeat can never 20    .

You can communicate that power to anyone who needs it. This is probably the greatest work you can do with your enthusiasm.

We all know the importance of curiosity, and here are some tips on how to develop it.

Keep an open mind. This is essential if you are to have a curious mind. Be open to learning, unlearning, and relearning things.1.     Therefore, you should be prepared to accept this possibility and change your mind.

  2.     Most people just accept the world as it is.

This way, they will certainly lose the “holy curiosity”. Try to dig deeper beneath the surface of what is around you. A sure way to dig deeper beneath the surface is asking questions. What, why, when, who, where, and how are the questions curious people always ask.

Don’t label anything as boring. Whenever you label something as boring, you close one more door of possibilities. Curious people are unlikely to consider things boring.3.     Even if they don’t yet have time to explore them, they will leave the door open to be visited another  time.

Take learning as something fun. If you see learning as a burden, there’s no way you will want to dig deeper into anything. That will just make the burden heavier. However,if you think of learning as something fun,you will naturally want to dig deeper.4.

Read diverse materials. It will introduce you to the possibilities and excitement of other worlds which may attract I your interest in exploring further. One easy way to do this is through reading diverse materials.5.        It’ll feed your mind with the excitement of a new world.

   A. Never take things as granted.

   B. Don’t spend too much time on just one world.

   C. Try to pick a book or magazine on a new subject.

   D. Some things you know and believe might be wrong.

   E. It doesn’t matter that you don’t agree to others’ opinions.

   F. Instead, they always see these things as a door to an exciting new world.

   G. So look at life through the glasses of fun and enjoy the learning process.

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain for almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. If we didn’t see some rain soon,we would lose everything.

I was in the kitchen making lunch for my husband and his brothers when I saw my six-year-old son,Billy, walking towards the woods. He was obviously walking with great effort. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods,he came running out again, towards the house.

Moments later, however,he was once again walking towards the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally,my curiosity got the best of me. I went out of the house and followed him on his journey.

He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked, being very careful not to spill the water he held in them. Branches and thorns (荆棘) slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. As I leaned in to spy on him,I saw the most amazing site.

Several large deer appeared threatening in front of him. But Billy walked right up to them. I almost screamed for him to get away. And I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, obviously suffering from the heavy loss of water, lifting its head with great effort to drink the water cupped in my beautiful boy’s hands.

I stood on the edge of the woods watching the most beautiful heart working so hard to save a life. As my tears began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops...and more drops... and more. I looked up at the sky.  It was as if God,himself, was weeping with pride.

Climbing Kilimanjaro is a transformational experience for many people. The things that make the mountain hard are the very things that make it so powerful. In the case of my son Josh and I,the walk up Kilimanjaro proved a powerful symbol of his transition into manhood, and a great change in our relationship.

Day three on the mountain,Josh was hit with massive headaches. He told me every step felt like a nail driving into his head. And then,on the night we climbed the crater rim, less than 40 minutes from the summit,Josh fell. I was walking ahead, and did not even see it. He was so exhausted that he could not get up. He recalled our guides, debating whether or not they should take him straight down. Josh snapped out of it. He forced himself to his feet, and shook the guides off. He set his face towards the peak and just kept marching. Near the summit he caught up with me and we reached the peak together.

“I’ve never been in so much pain and so happy at the same time”’he said,as we sat side by side on the frozen rock and looked down over Africa. “You know,in the past when we’d go on camping and rafting trips, you guided and took care of me through it all. But on Kilimanjaro it was different. From the bottom up,I climbed it. I never felt like a kid, even when I was in pain. You never acted like a parent. ”

“That’s not quite true ,”I replied. “When you told me that on the summit you fell and I did not even notice,my first thought was ,‘Oh my God!I’m such an awful parent!y But then it hit me, ‘ He got himself up. He walked to the peak on his own. He didn’t need me to help.

I realized as I spoke that two people had died that night on Kilimanjaro. A child and a parent. It was just two friends who walked down the mountain together.

In a class this past December, after I wrote some directions on the board for students about their final examination, one young woman quickly took a picture of the board using her smart phone. When I looked in her direction, she apologized :“Sorry. Was it wrong to take a picture?”

“I can’t read my own handwriting,” the young woman explained. “It’s best if I take a picture of your writing so I can understand the notes. ”

That remark started a class-wide conversation about taking a picture instead of taking notes. For those in the phototaking camp, motivations extended beyond their inability to comprehend their own handwriting. Some took pictures of notes because they knew their phone was a safe place to store material. They might lose paper, they reasoned, but they wouldn’t lose their phones. Some took photos because they wanted to record exactly the manner in which I had noted information on the board. Others told me that during class they liked to be able to listen to the discussion attentively.

Yet the use of cameras as note takers, though it may be convenient, does raise significant questions for the classroom. Is a picture an effective replacement for the process of note-taking?

Instructors encourage students to take notes because the act of doing so is more than merely recording necessary information—it helps prepare the way for understanding. Encouraging students to take notes may be an old-fashioned instructional method, but a method having a long history doesn’t mean it’s out of date. Writing things down engages a student’s brain in listening, visual, and kinesthetic (动觉的) learning—a view supported by a longstanding research. The act of writing down information enables a person to begin committing it to memory, and to process and combine it,establishing the building blocks of learning new concepts.

Taking a picture does indeed record the information, but it deletes some of the necessary mental engagement that taking notes employs. So can the two be equally effective?

I’m not sure how to measure the effectiveness of either method. For now,I allow students to take notes however they see fit—handwritten or photographed—because I figure that some notes,no matter the method of note-taking,are better than none.

Worry problems are everywhere in our daily life. How to solve them? The answer is that we must equip ourselves to deal with different kinds of worries by learning the three basic steps of problem analysis. The three steps are:

  Get the facts.

Why is it so important to get the facts? Unless you have the facts, you can’t possibly attempt to solve your problem intelligently. Without the facts, all you can do is wondering around in confusion. It is not an easy job to get facts. When you are worried, your emotions are riding high.1.

When trying to get the facts, you can pretend that you are collecting this information not for yourself but for some other person.2.        You can also pretend that you are a lawyer preparing to agree. Try to get all the facts both on your side and the other side of the case. You will generally find the truth lies somewhere in between.

  3.        Whenever you are worried, write down the questions that make you worry. And write out all the various steps you could take and then the probable consequences of each step. For example, what am I worrying about? What can I do about it? Here is what I’m going to do about it. After carefully weighing all the facts, you can calmly come to a decision.

  Act on that decision.

  4.        How can you break the worry habit before it breaks you? Crowd worry out of your mind by keeping busy. Plenty of action is one of the best ways to cure worry.5.        If you know a situation is beyond your power,

say to yourself: “It is so;it can’t be otherwise. ”Don’t permit little things to ruin your happiness. Try to cultivate a mental attitude that will bring you peace and happiness.

   A. Accept what can’t be avoided.

   B. Analyze the facts.

   C. There comes a time when you must decide and never look back.

   D. But here are two ideas that can help you see the facts in a clear and objective way.

   E. Unless you take your action, all your face-finding and analysis is a sheer waste of energy.

   F. Decide how much anxiety a thing may be worth.

   G. This will help you to take a cold and fair view of the evidence.
