Last weekend, I helped my grandparents prepare for our trip to Xi'an. On Saturday morning, together with them, I searched the Internet for the train schedule, the weather in Xi'an, or some hotel informations. In the afternoon, I went to the train station and manage to buy two tickets for them since there was a long queue. After dinner, I packed all the things that might be need into suitcase. And the next morning, I went to the station to see them away off. Wave goodbye to them on the platform, I felt very happy for them and wished them a safer journey.

Social media and the mobile web have given rise to a strange phenomenon(ÏÖÏó) called the selfie. It refers to a picture of yourself, usually shared on any social networking website.

¡¾1¡¿ Some selfies are extremely close-ups, and others show part of an arm held straight outward. A few of them even feature the subject standing in front of a bathroom mirror.

Everyone takes selfies, but the younger crowd seems to be especially involved in the trend. Young people are relatively heavier digital users. They are interested in staying connected to their friends. ¡¾2¡¿

There are also kinds of psychological(ÐÄÀíѧµÄ) factors driving people to take a selfie and upload it to a social networking site. ¡¾3¡¿ A quick and easy way to attract others¡¯ attention is to get ¡°likes¡± and comment from friends. Secondly, it is human nature to show off your own great achievements. When you feel good about yourself or look good, it is far too easy to take out your phone and document it all through one or several selfies. ¡¾4¡¿ That is right. Sometimes people are bored at work, bored at school, bored at home and even bored on the toilet. Last but not the least, social media is about being social! If that means uploading as many selfies as possible, then so be it. It is fun, and it¡¯s a cool way to sort of document of your own life.

Finally, there are things to be mindful of when you are posting. It¡¯s easy to think you¡¯re sharing a photo with a few people. ¡¾5¡¿ So don¡¯t post anything online, selfie especially.

A. There are a lot of selfie styles.

B. The rise of selfies has become universal.

C. Social media, to some extent, is the driving force of their selfie activity.

D. The desire to take, post and get ¡°likes¡± on selfies goes back to a biological behavior.

E. But the whole world of social media is public and every individual can get access to it.

F. There are also people who will take selfies because they have nothing else better to do.

G. The leading factor is that people want to get attention from as many people as possible.

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿Science has a lot of uses. It can uncover laws of nature, cure diseases, make bombs, and help bridges to stand up. Indeed science is so good at what it does that there¡¯s always a temptation(ÓÕ»ó) to drag it into problems where it may not be helpful. David Brooks, author of The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement, appears to be the latest in a long line of writers who have failed to go against the temptation.

Brooks gained fame for several books. His latest book The Social Animal, however, is more ambitious and serious than his earlier books. It is an attempt to deal with a set of weighty topics. The book focuses on big questions: What has science uncovered about human nature? What are the sources of character? And why are some people happy and successful while others aren¡¯t?

To answer these questions, Brooks studies a wide range of disciplines£¨Ñ§¿Æ£©. Considering this, you might expect the book to be a simple description of facts. But Brooks has formed his book in an unusual, and perhaps unfortunate way. Instead of introducing scientific theories, he tells a story, within which he tries to make his points, perhaps in order to keep the reader¡¯s attention. So as Harold and Erica, the hero and heroine in his story, live through childhood, we hear about the science of child development and as they begin to date we hear about the theory of sexual attraction. Brooks carries this through to the death of one of his characters.

On the whole, Brooks¡¯ story is acceptable if uninspired. As one would expect, his writing is mostly clear and, to be fair, some chapters stand out above the rest. I enjoyed, for instance, the chapter in which Harold discovers how to think on his own. While Harold and Erica are certainly not strong or memorable characters, the more serious problems with The Social Animal lie elsewhere. These problems partly involve Brooks¡¯ attempt to translate his tale into science.

¡¾1¡¿The author mentions the functions of science at the beginning of the passage to__________.

A. explain where science can be applied

B. show the value of Brooks¡¯ new book

C. remind the reader of the importance of science

D. explain why many writers use science in their works

¡¾2¡¿According to the author, which of the following could be a strength of the book?

A. Its strong basis.

B. Its clear writing.

C. Its convincing points.

D. Its memorable characters.

¡¾3¡¿What is the author¡¯s general attitude towards the book?

A. Contradictory. B. Supportive.

C . Cautious. D. Critical.

¡¾4¡¿What is the author likely to write about after the last paragraph?

A. Death of the characters.

B. Brooks¡¯ life experience.

C. Problems with the book.

D. Brooks¡¯ translation skills.

You want to be confident and feel confident, but what if you're starting with little or no confidence? True self-confidence isn't an overnight acquisition. It takes dedication to realize you are a good human being that is worthy of respect and love.

Recognize your insecurities

What does that voice in the back of your mind say? Why do you feel uncomfortable or ashamed of yourself? This could be anything from regrets to friends at school or negative experience. Whatever is making you feel unworthy, or ashamed, identify it, give it a name, and write it down. You can also tear these written pieces to start feeling positive on those points.

Get rid of insecurities gradually

Each day you should weaken it. There's no quick fix. Get to the root of the problem; focus on it and understand that you need to resolve each issue before you can move on. Check if it is an old past emotion and if it is really still relevant or applicable in your life today. And that does not mean you have to get rid of whatever makes you feel bad (many times, you simply can't). You need to learn to accept yourself, your past, your circumstances as they are, without necessarily thinking of them as ¡°bad¡±.

Identify your successes

Everyone is good at something, so discover the things at which you do extremely well, then focus on your talents. Give yourself permission to be proud of them. Give yourself credit for your successes. Inferiority (×Ô±°) is a state of mind in which you've declared yourself a victim. Do not allow yourself to be victimized.

Be Positive

Avoid self-pity, or the pity and sympathy of others. Never allow others to make you feel inferior¡ªthey can only do so if you let them. If you continue to dislike and look down upon yourself, others are going to do and believe likewise. Instead, speak in a positive way about yourself, about your future, and about your progress. Do not be afraid to show your strengths and qualities to others. By doing so, you strengthen those ideas in your mind and encourage your growth in a positive direction.

Apply ¡°facial feedback theory¡±

Studies surrounding what¡¯s called the "facial feedback theory" suggest that the expressions on your face can actually encourage your brain to express certain emotions. So look in the mirror and smile every day, and you might feel happier with yourself and more confident in the long run.

Help others

When you know you¡¯re of help to the people around you, and are making a positive difference in other people¡¯s lives (even if it's just being kinder to the person who serves you coffee in the morning), you'll know that you are a positive force in the world¡ªwhich will boost yourself confidence.

Now, dear friends, will you let confidence keep you company? Be confident, and accomplishing your goals will be just around the corner.
