Growing up, I had a scar on my face — a perfect arrow in the center of my cheek, pointing at my left eye. I 36 it when I was three, long before I knew that scars were a 37 thing, especially for a girl. I only knew that my scar brought me 38 and tenderness and candy. As I got older, I began to take 39in my scar, in part to stop people laughing at me, but mainly as a reaction to the thought that I should feel uncomfortable. It’s true. I was 40 the first couple of times someone pointed at my 41 and asked, “What’s that?” or called me “Scarface.” But the more I heard how 42 my scar was, the more I found myself liking it.

When I turned fifteen, my parents — 43 the advice of a doctor — decided it was time to 44 on what was now a thick, shiny red scar.

“But I don’t mind the scar, really,” I told my father as he 45 that I would have the operation during my summer vacation. And my friends, along with my boyfriend at the time, 46 as I did, that my scar was 47 and almost pretty in its own way. After so many years, it was a 48 of me. But my father said it was a deformity (畸形). I don’t know what 49 more that day: hearing my father call my scar a deformity, 50 realizing that it didn’t 51 to him how I felt about it.

I did have the operation that summer.

In my late twenties, I took a long look at my scar, something I hadn’t done in years. 52, it could be seen in the right light, but no one 53 me about it anymore. As I leaned uneasily toward the mirror, I felt a sudden 54.

There was something powerful about my scar and the proud person I 55 because of it. I have never been quite so strong since they cut it out.

It didn’t take long at all for me to decide to come and study in the UK. With the approach of globalization, more and more people realize that it is necessary to study in an English-speaking country. UK does not only offer the chance to study the original English, it also has so many first-class universities, whose qualifications are widely respected all over the world. Besides the academic, there are many fun elements too; its famous football environment is definitely one for me!  Since UK has such a diverse society, I feel there is less chance that there would be any racism(种族歧视) at boarding school. This is one reason why I did not take any summer courses before I started my school. It was just so easy to settle in and pick up the language as you go along, because everyone is so friendly and helpful. At the moment I am doing 5 A-levels and 1 AS, which are Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Government and Politics and Chinese. I am aiming to achieve A’s in all my exams, and I hope to go to Oxford University to study Engineering Science in the autumn.

I still remember my first day at Merchiston Castle School, and I was really nervous about it, because I have never visited the school before and didn’t take any summer courses. Despite my anxiety, I soon relaxed once I arrived; the staff members were so nice that I felt that my spoken English was better than it actually was!  As soon as I walked into the day room (日间休息室) of my boarding house, I was absolutely amazed by the friendly atmosphere: Everyone was so friendly that a boy as shy as I had no difficulty in setting in, and I made many new friends on my very first day, although I was struggling to remember all the names.

Nick was not the kind of boy I had expected to spend my summer with. I was hoping to    have a   21  the summer before my busy senior year, but my mother asked me to do her a   22 . One of her colleagues needed a full-time   23 . “You planned to volunteer at the local hospital, why not volunteer to   24  Nick instead?” Then she told me that this six-year-old boy was not a   25  child.
Nick was a lovely little boy who suffered from many disorders. Normal day-care centres would not   26  him. As a baby, he had serious ear infections which left him with equilibrium (平衡) problems. He couldn’t   27  or run properly. I was hesitating (犹豫)   28  I was to take the job when my mother   29 , “Don’t you want to be a nurse in the future? I doubt if you even have the   30 .”
Then I told her I was   31  for the job.
The day started at 7:00 a.m. Nick was my wake-up call! With so much energy and very little   32 , he was quite a mix.
In the park, when he saw all the other children play on the jungle gym and swings (秋千), the boy’s face   33  up — how he wished he belonged to the group of his age! You would think it would be   34  to get a child to go down a slide (滑梯). Believe me, it wasn’t! It took time, a lot of time. But with patience and support, Nick took one step up the slide each day. We worked together to face his   35  and gradually he got closer to taking the slide of his life.
Halfway through the summer, he   36  it to the top of the slide. With my arms   37  him tightly, we flew down the slide! I waited for his reaction. After realizing that he was safe and sound, he gave me a big   38  and asked, “May I go down again, alone?” I had never been happier in my life when I saw this little child climb the ladder and enjoy what other children   39  for granted.  This   40  child taught me that being a nurse means respect, kindness and patience.
