【题目】Weather experts said this year could be one of the strongest EL Nino events in recorded history. El Nino means severe weather conditions in parts of the world. In eastern Africa, for example, Kenya and Uganda are preparing for possible flooding. Yet South Africa and Malawi are already dealing with extremely dry weather.

El Nino is Spanish for “the child”. It usually begins in December, near the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. In fact, the weather event was named in his honor. El Nino develops when winds off the west coast of South America weaken. This permits warm water in the western Pacific to expand toward the east and the Americas. At the same time, clouds and rain over the warm water move east, too. El Nio conditions normally appear only about twice every 10 years. Usually, El Nino conditions continue for about 12 to 18 months. They bring warm weather to some areas. These areas become wetter than normal, while others become drier.

The United Nations Children’s Fund warns that many people are at risk from hunger, disease and water shortages resulting from El Nino. In the east and southern Africa up to 11 million children could be affected. East African countries usually experience heavy rainfall during the El Nino. Southern Africa usually has little rainfall which may lead to wildfires or drought(干旱).

Weather changes caused by El Nino depend on the strength of the condition. In the early 1980s, strong El Nino was linked to dry weather in Australia and Asia, rain and flooding in South America and high temperatures in many parts of the U.S. The years later, smaller El Nino caused trouble in parts of the U.S. It caused severe floods in the Southeast and the Middle West. Tom Di Leberto is a meteorologist(气象学家) at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Washington, D.C. He said this year could be the third strongest El Nino on record. But we will not know for sure until all the weather records are examined.

A. many countries are preparing for the coming floods

B. Africa will probably suffer a lot form this year’s El Nino

2The second paragraph is mainly about ____________.

A. what El Nino actually means

B. how El Nino comes into being

C. when El Nino will occur next time

D. why El Nino causes weather changes

3Which of the following countries often suffers from flooding caused by El Nino?

A. Kenya B. Malawi

C. Australia D. South Africa

4The author mentioned the 1980s’ El Nino and the 1990s’ El Nino to ______ .

A. explain why so many countries were affected by El Nino

B. prove weather changes caused by El Nino depend on its strength

C. argue that El Nino conditions usually appear about twice every 10 years

【题目】What personal qualities are desirable in a teacher? I think the following would be generally accepted.

Firstly, the teacher’s personality should be lively and attractive. This does not rule out people who are plainlooking, or even ugly, because many such people have great personal charm. 1.

Secondly, it is not merely desirable but essential for a teacher to have a capacity for sympathy, a capacity to understand the minds and feelings of children. 2—not of what is wrong, but of the weaknesses and immaturity of children, which cause them to make mistakes.

Thirdly, I hold it essential for a teacher to be both intellectually and morally honest. This means that he will be aware of his intellectual strengths and limitations, and will have thought about and decided upon the moral principles by which his life shall be guided. 3. That is part of the technique of teaching, which demands that every now and then a teacher should be able to put on an act—to enliven(使生动) a lesson, correct a fault, or award praise.

A teacher must be capable of infinite patience. 4, for we are none of us born like that.

Finally, I think a teacher should have the kind of mind which always wants to go on learning. 5;there is always something more to learn about. There are three principal objects of study: the subjects which the teacher is teaching; the methods by which the subjects can best be taught to the particular pupils in the classes he is teaching; most importantly, the children, young people, or adults to whom the subjects are to be taught.

A. This, I may say, is largely a matter of selfdiscipline and selftraining

B. Closely related to this is the capacity to be tolerant

D. Children, especially young children, live in a world that is rather larger than life

E. There is no contradiction (自相矛盾) in my going on to say that a teacher should be a bit of an actor

F. But it does rule out such types as the overexcitable, sad, cold, and frustrated

G. There are two fundamental principles of British education today

【题目】I recently ran into an old friend who I hadn't seen for two years. She looked tired and was talking in a loud voice. She is a headhunter, and had just finished interviewing a candidate but failed to impress him.

Then she started to complain about her health problems. One year ago, she began to notice a ringing in her ears. She went to the hospital and was told that her problem might have resulted from stress. The doctor gave her pills for her nerves.

At night, she has to listen to loud music to quiet the noise in her head and fall asleep. Her life has become a twopoint routine of work and home. Even while she was vacationing in Thailand, she found herself searching for the right candidate.

She suffers from the same workaholic depression as another friend who works for an advertising company. This friend has to work overtime almost every day. If she's lucky, she can leave at 9 p.m.; otherwise it's midnight. For her, working on weekends has become normal. Each time I see her, she seems down.

My two friends share something in common: They don't want to escape their misery, believing that if you don't work hard when you are young, you will regret it. That may be true, but there are limits. If every day you wake up feeling down, then it may be time to move on.

As important as finding a job that you really like, is finding a company with a healthy atmosphere. The right company should lift your spirits and have a team working toward a common goal. As for the employees, they should work hard and play hard. If you can enjoy life, you will have more passion to bring to your work.

1Why did the author's old friend suffer from health problems?

A. Because of stress from work. B. Because she ate too much.

C. Because of the loud noise in her workplace. D. Because she failed to impress a candidate.

2One thing that the author's two friends share is that ________.

A. they both love their work B. they both work extremely hard

C. they both work for an advertising company D. they both take an active part in social activities

3What does the author think important in finding a job?
