Music is an international language. The songs that are sung or played by instruments£¨ÀÖÆ÷£© are beautiful to all people everywhere.

Popular music in America is what every student likes. Students carry small radios£¨ÊÕÒô»ú£© with earphones and listen to music before class, after class and at lunch. Students with cars buy large speakers (ÑïÉùÆ÷) and play the music loudly as they drive on the street.

Adult drivers listen to music on the car radio as they drive to work. They also listen to the news about sports, the weather, politics(ÕþÖÎ), and activities of the American people. But most of the radio broadcast(¹ã²¥) is music.

Even before my father left us, my mother had to go back to work to support our family. Once I came out of the kitchen, complaining, ¡°Mum, I can¡¯t peel potatoes. I have only one hand.¡±

Mum never looked up from sewing. ¡°You get yourself into that kitchen and peel those potatoes,¡± she told me. ¡°And don¡¯t ever use that as an excuse for anything again!¡±

In the second grade, our teacher lined up my class on the playground and had each of us race across the monkey bars, swinging from one high steel rod to the next. When it was my turn, I shook my head. Some kids behind me laughed, and I went home crying.

That night I told Mum about it. She hugged me, and I saw her ¡°we¡¯ll see about that¡± look. The next afternoon, she took me back to school. At the deserted playground, mum looked carefully at the bars.

¡°Now, pull up with your right arm,¡± she advised. She stood by as I struggled to lift myself with my right hand until I could hook the bar with my other elbow. Day after day we practiced, and she praised me for every rung I reached.

I¡¯ll never forget the next time, crossing the rungs; I looked down at the kids who were standing with their mouths open.

One night, after a dance at my new junior high, I lay in bed sobbing. I could hear Mum came into my room. ¡°Mum,¡± I said, weeping, ¡°none of the boys would dance with me.¡±

For a long time, I didn¡¯t hear anything. Then she said, ¡°Oh, honey, someday you¡¯ll be beating those boys off with a bat.¡± Her voice was faint and cracking. I peeked out from my covers to see tears running down her cheeks. Then I knew how much she suffered on my behalf. She had never let me see her tears.

Deserts are found where there is little rainfall or where rain for a whole year falls in only a few weeks' time. Ten inches of rain may be enough for many plants to survive if the rain is spread throughout the year. If it falls within one or two months and the rest of the year is dry, those plants may die and a desert may form.

Sand begins as tiny pieces of rock that get smaller and smaller as wind and weather wear them down. Sand dunes (ɳÇð) are formed as winds move the sand across the desert. Bit by bit, the dunes grow over the years, always moving with the winds and changing the shape. Most of them are only a few feet tall, but they can grow to be several hundred feet high.

There is, however, much more to a desert than sand. In the deserts of the southwestern United States, cliffs (ÐüÑÂ) and deep valleys were formed from thick mud that once lay under a sea more than millions of years ago. Over the centuries, the water dried up. Wind, sand, rain, heat and cold all wore away at the remaining rocks. The faces of the desert mountains are always changing ¨C-very, very slowly ---as these forces of nature continue to work on the rock.

Most deserts have a surprising variety of life. There are plants, animals and insects that have adapted to life in the desert. During the heat of the day a visitor may see very few signs of living things, but as the air begins to cool in the evening, the desert comes to life. As the sun begins to rise again in the sky, the desert once again becomes quiet and lonely.

1.Many plants may survive in deserts when___________.

A. it is dry all the year round

B. the rain falls only in a few weeks

C. there is little rain in a year

D. the rain is spread out in a year

2.Sand dunes are formed when____________.

A. sand piles up little by little

B. there is plenty of rain in a year

C. the sea has dried up over the years

D. pieces of rock get smaller

3.The underlined sentence in the third paragraph probably means that in a desert there is_____.

A. too much sand

B. more sand than before

C. nothing except sand

D. something else besides sand

4.It can be learned from the text that in a desert____________.

A. there is no rainfall throughout the year

B. life exists in rough conditions

C. all sand dunes are a few feet high

D. rocks are worn away only by wind and heat

A couple had a son eleven years after they married. They were a loving couple and the boy was the apple of their eye. When the boy was around four years old, one day the father was very tired after work so he asked his wife to pick up their son. The mother, who was very busy in the kitchen, totally forgot about it.

Later the boy lost his way on the street. When the son was found missing, the mother hurried to look for him, but she didn¡¯t find him. The mother felt very sad and didn¡¯t know how to face her husband.

When the father went to the police station after hearing that the son was missing, he looked at his wife and said just four words. What do you think the four words were? The husband just said "I love you, darling."

The son was missing. If he had picked him up earlier, this would not have happened. There is no point in blaming (Ôð±¸) anyone. His wife had also lost her only child. What his wife needed at that moment was comfort and understanding from her husband. That is what the husband gave his wife. Several weeks later, with the help of the police, the couple finally found their lost son. The family¡¯s relationship became stronger over that time.

Sometimes we spend lots of time asking who is to blame. We miss many chances to give each other support and let each other feel the warmth of human relationships. Get rid of all your unwillingness to forgive, selfishness, and fears and you will find the world is much more wonderful.

A. A person who always has a sweet smile.

B. A person who is as pretty as an apple.

C. A person who is loved more than anyone else.

2.Why didn¡¯t the father pick the boy up himself?

A. He was very lazy.

B. He thought the mother had picked him up.

C. He forgot to pick him up.

D. He was too tired to do it.

3.What do you think of the husband?

A. Friendly. B. Careful.

C. Hard-working. D. Broad-minded.

4.What¡¯s the difference of the family¡¯s relationship after this matter?

A. The family¡¯s relationship became stronger over that time.

B. The family¡¯s relationship became worse over that time

C. The family¡¯s relationship is the same as before.

D. Not mentioned.
