The Winner’s Guide to Success

Do you know what makes people successful? To find out the answers, an American scholar recently visited some of the most successful people around the world. 【1】

Be responsible for yourself

Sometimes you may want to blame others for your failure to get ahead. In fact, when you say someone or something outside of yourself is stopping you from making success, you’re giving away your own power.2

Write a plan

It is very difficult to try to get what you want without a good plan. It is just like trying to drive through strange roads to a city far away. 3Without this “map”, you may waste your time, money and also your energy; while with the “map” you’ll enjoy the “trip” and get what you want in the shortest possible time.

Be willing to pay the price

4So you must be ready to work hard even harder than you have ever done. If you are not willing to pay the price, you won’t get anything valuable.

5

It seems to us that everyone knows this. But it is easier said than done. When you are doing something, you must tell yourself again and again: Giving up is worse than failure because failure can be the mother of success, but giving up means the death of hope.

A. Never give up.

B. Nothing is easy to get.

C. A good plan is like a map to you.

D. Here are some keys to success that they give.

And know exactly how and when you're expected to complete each assignment. So, you need to talk with the teacher. 2

Money Matters

Parents should help their children understand money. 【1 So you may start talking about money when your child shows an interest in buying things, candy or toys, for example.

1. The basic function of money

Begin explaining the basic function of money by showing how people trade money for goods or services. It is important to show your child how money is traded for the things he wants to have. If he wants to have a toy, give him the money and let him hand the money to the cashier(收银员). 2 When your child grows a bit older and understands the basic function of money, you can start explaining more complex ways of using money.

2.Money lessons

Approach money lessons with openness and honesty. 3 If you must say no to a child’s request to spend money, explain, You have enough toy trucks for now.” Or, if the request is for many different things , says, “You have to make a choice between this toy and that toy.”

3. 4

Begin at the grocery store. Pick out two similar brands of a product----a name-brand butter and a generic(无商标商品), for example. You can show your child how to make choices between different brands of a product so that you can save money. 5 If he chooses the cheaper brand, allow him to make another purchase with the money saved. Later, you may explain how the more expensive choice leaves less money for other purchases.

G The best time to teach a child anything about money is when he shows an interest.

【题目】You have probably been told by your high school instructor that writing is an important and practical skill. However, you may not be convinced that the ability to write will be important in your own future. If so, you will be surprised at the results of a recent survey by the National Institute of Education. More than four thousand working men and women who had graduated fifteen years earlier were asked to name the courses they would have taken in college if they had known better. The designer of the survey expected people to name courses in computer science, mathematics, or business. But the course most often mentioned was writing.

If you already have a job, you are probably not surprised at their answers. Many jobs require the ability to write. Despite the increasing use of the telephone and the computer, much information must be communicated in writing. Some ten million people—managers, engineers, sales representatives, and many others— write regularly as part of their jobs. Summaries, reports, reports, letters and speeches are required in today’s work world. The ability to write, therefore, is an important skill. The successful individual is almost always the one who can communicate successfully in writing.

Writing communicates your thoughts and feelings to others; it also tells you something about yourself. Maybe this is what Eldridge Cleaver had in mind in his autobiography, “I started to write... to save myself...I had to seek out the truth... I had to find out who I am and what I want to be ,what type of man I should be ,and what I could do to become the best of which I was capable.”

【1】Why does the author say writing is very important?

A.Because it is a required course at high school and college.

B.Because it is a way to communicate your thoughts.

C.Because it is an important skill for many jobs.

D.Because it shows your good quality.

【题目】Comparative thinking and behavior is quite typical among teenagers, but it is the responsibility of the parent to set limits and hold firmly to them. Frequently, a parent will tell me in frustration about how their child has complained about not having the very best in fashion design like their friends, or the latest electronic gadgetry that all the other kids own.

Parents need to teach their children selfconfidence. Those who are selfconfident resist the urge to compare themselves to other people, and do not overestimate others' experience while diminishing their own. But some people may have a mantra signified by the slogan, if only. “If only I had the money of my brother; if only I was smart like my classmates; if only I was as goodlooking as my friends.”

Comparing oneself with others is a trap. People who compare themselves with other individuals tend to feel that they are not good enough. They tend to perseverate(表现执拗)about their shortcomings. Even if they try their best,it is not good enough because they can always find someone who performs at a higher level. When people compare, they generally focus on their negative traits. They ignore all that is going right in their life. They also tend to minimize their success and dismiss positive gestures and compliments.

Those who are confident listen to their own inner voice. They are not influenced by other people's view of events. They are not overly impressed by others' success, money, health, and material possessions. They do not believe that others have a /span>greater sense of emotional wellbeing than they do.

Recently, The Harvard Mental Health Letter published an article which indicated that people with chronic(慢性的)pain had as significant a sense of wellbeing as those without chronic pain. However, those with chronic pain tended to overestimate the emotional wellbeing of physically healthy people. The study confirmed that it is how we view events that is important, not the nature of our circumstances which may include making comparisons.

【1】 It seems that those who make comparisons don't________.

A. care about their success

B. have selfconfidence

C. overestimate others' experience

D. understand others' success

【2】The third paragraph mainly tells us________.

A. people tend to compare themselves to other individuals

B. those who make comparisons focus on their strengths

C. those who make comparisons don't deserve compliments

D. making comparisons can cause many negative effects

【3】The article published in The Harvard Mental Health Letter indicates________.

A. chronic pain actually doesn't affect people's sense of happiness

B. physically healthy people have a higher sense of happiness

C. emotional health has nothing to do with physical health

D. what is important is the nature of events rather than our viewpoints

【4】 What is the author's attitude towards “making comparisons”?

A. Favorable. B. Unconcerned.

C. Disapproving. D. Doubtful.
