Believe it or not, many of the biggest change in how English is spoken have come from common people in the streets. And one of the most important places which English has changed is the playground! These playgrounds can be any place where the young people meet, such like a sports field or a beach. Often words using by black kids in big cities become popular for other kids many years later. On the beaches of southern California, teenagers invented words to describe what they felt when they surfed. These words found its way into the high schools and then to other places. Similar changes happen among young people in Ireland and Australia. Children from one group would find ways to play with another group more easily. Often they made new words just develop an identity different from their parents.

【6】whathow.考查副词。此处指青少年们发明了词语来描述他们冲浪时感觉如何,感觉如何用how,故whathow.

【7】itstheir.考查代词。此处与句中These words一致用复数,故itstheir.

【8】去掉the.考查冠词。此处泛指高中不用冠词,故去掉the.

【9】happenhappened.考查时态。与全文时态一致用过去时,故happenhappened.

【10】develop加to.考查不定式。此处是不定式表目的,指他们发明新词仅仅为了发展与父母不同的个性。故develop加to.

【题目】A mouse looked through a crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife opening a package: What food might it contain? He was astonished to discover that it was a mouse trap!

Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse declared the warning, “There is a mouse trap in the house, there is a mouse trap in the house.”

The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, “Mr Mouse, I can tell you this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me, I cannot be bothered by it.”

The mouse turned to the pig and told him, “There is a mouse trap in the house.” “I am so sorry, Mr Mouse,” sympathized the pig, “but there is nothing I can do about it but pray; be assured that you are in my prayers.”

The mouse turned to the cow, who replied, “A mouse trap, am I in grave danger, huh?”

So the mouse returned to the house, head down and depressed to face the farmer’s mouse trap alone.

That very night a sound was heard throughout the house, like the sound of a mouse trap catching its prey. The farmer’s wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see that it was an evil snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer’s wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital. She returned home with a fever. Now everyone knew to treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup’s main ingredient. His wife’s sickness continued so that friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig. The farmer’s wife did not get well, in fact, she died, and so many people came for her funeral. The farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide meat for all of them to eat.

So the next time you hear that someone is facing a problem and think that it does not concern you, remember that when the least of us is threatened, we are all at risk.

【题目】There is a large percentage of Asian people in the US. They’re hard working, respectful but strange sometimes. If you don’t understand the culture, you will get some problems with them. Asian people are different from any other cultures if you think you know them, you might want to think again.

How are they different? When it comes to most Asian culture, respect is everything. You can do anything you want but don't disrespect an Asian man. You will get some real consequences afterward and especially if he is your boss. It’s something called face saving in the Asian culture. It’s ridiculous sometimes but it’s their culture. Sometimes their culture can come in between their relationship at work. Asian people might expect a lot of respect from their co-workers when their co-workers just see them as an equal.

Americans are very different from Asian people. If you’re Asian, you might want to understand the American culture and even adapt to their culture if you work with them. It will be easier for you since you’re in their countries. Imagine an American working in China, expecting Chinese co-workers to get along with him when he criticizes them straight out on every single matter in front of everyone. I think they will take him outside and take care of him. It just doesn’t work that way with Asian people.

If you’re an American boss giving your Asian employee a review, you will see that they will have a problem with your negative remarks. They will think that you don’t like them, disrespectful, and want to get rid of them; when in fact, you’re just doing your job. Of course, it’s not fair for you as an American boss but just expect that it can be something that is on your Asian employee’s mind.

【1】The Americans can’t get along well with the Asians probably because______.

A. their cultures are different

B. they don’t like each other

C. both of them are too proud

D. they have different political views

【2】The underlined phrase “face saving” in Paragraph 2 probably means_____.

A. saving some money for later use

B. making faces to please your boss

C. showing some respect to somebody

D. helping somebody out of trouble

【3】 From the third paragraph we can know that it is difficult_________.

A. for the Asians to accept the culture in America

B. for the Americans to adapt to the culture in China

C. for people to learn the culture in a foreign country

D. for people to follow the culture in their own country

【4】The negative remarks an American boss gives on your work probably mean he/she ____________________.

A. doesn’t like you any longer

B. thinks you are not worth respecting

C. offer you some better advice

D. wants you to improve your work

Some Ways to Deal With Hardship and Pain in Life

Regardless of the difficulties you may face, it’s getting back up and moving forward that counts the most when you need to deal with hardship. 【1】

Write or talk about how you feel

Keeping my feelings to myself used to make me feel lonely, but when I found someone who actually cared about me, it became natural to share how I felt with him and that contributed to my ability to overcome troublesome situations. 2 Although talking to strangers about your issues may seem crazy, it actually isn’t.

3

It is said that running away from your problems will never help, and though that’s partially true, it doesn’t mean that you need to make yourself go so deeply into a situation that you run out of air to breathe and lose the ability to weigh the pros and cons of your choices. That happens more than we like to admit, which is why it’s important to separate yourself from a situation long enough to think clearly without having people hanging over your shoulders.

Remind yourself that you’re not alone

Regardless of who or what you depend on, you need to remind yourself that you are not alone; you have people who do care. 4 Sometimes it’s strangers who may share the same feelings as you do. Think about it—you may not know any of these readers personally but/span> they could be in the exact same situation as you, so in fact, no one is truly alone.

Accept the results and get back up again

5 Whether the results of your choices proved to be helpful or not, it’s time for you to accept them and get back up. This time you have a new experience to add to your book of life so the next time something tries to knock you down, it won’t be easy because you will be strong and determined to push forward. Life will go on, time will never stand still, and it rests upon you to make the right decision of moving forward.

A. Separate yourself from the situation.

B. Tell yourself to accept the hardship.

C. Finally, it’s time to accept what has happened.

D. All in all, remember that life is short.

E. Not only did I speak to him about how I felt, but I decided to blog about it.

F. Here are some things I've tried just to help me believe in a brighter future and get over a tough situation.

G. Even if it’s just one person, that’s enough to give you reason to remind yourself that you will never truly be alone.
