It was lunchtime and I walked into a small branch office on the West Side. I had come to   36  a checking account. The only officer on   37  was a fortyish black man, standing   38  a small counter from a young white boy who was wearing a V-necked sweater. I think I was especially   39  of the boy because he looked more like a kid from a prep school than a   40  in a West Side bank.
The boy continued to   41  my attention because of what happened next. He was holding an open savings-account book and   42  an expression of disappointment. “But I don’t understand. I opened the account myself, so why can’t I   43  any money?” the boy said, his voice breaking.
“I know it is, but those are the rules. I’ve already explained to you that a fourteen-year-old is not   44  to withdraw money without a letter from his parents,” the officer explained patiently.
Suddenly I noticed the account had a series of small deposits and withdraws. Then I questioned the officer, “How do you   45  that? Why did you let him withdraw money before, but not now?” He looked   46 . “Because the tellers were not aware of his age before and now they are. It’s really very   47 .” I turned to the boy with a shrug. “You’re really getting   48 ,” I said. “You ought to get your parents to come in here and   49 .” The boy looked destroyed.   50 , he put his savings book in a rear-pocket and walked out of the bank.
The officer turned to me. “You know,” he said, “you really shouldn’t have got   51 .” I couldn’t believe what this idiot was saying. “We were   52  this morning that some neighborhood bully has been shaking down (敲诈) this boy for more than a month. The other guy was   53  him to take money out every week and hand it over. The poor kid was   54  too scared to tell anyone. Anyway, the police are on the case and they’ll probably make a(n)  55  today."
“You mean there is no rule about being too young to withdraw money from a savings account?”
“Not that I ever heard of. Now, sir, what can we do for you?”

Stop eating yourself stupid we all know that poor nutrition can lead to bad health and even weight gain. Now add “lack of intelligence” to the growing list. A recent study has found that what you eat could very likely play a role in how smart you are.

According to the study, rats fed a high-fat diet for 10 days showed signs of weakness and even had trouble finding food that was waiting for them. 1.  Actually a high-fat diet could weaken our intelligence--but so can a low-calorie diet. The trick appears to lie in finding a nice balance.

Here are ways to achieve that happy balance and make you smarter through diet, exercise and improving your brain power.

Figure out how many calories you need to maintain your weight. __2.__ If you need to drop a few pounds, take away the number you get by 400 calories; consume that number of calories each day until you drop the weight.

__3.__Aim for healthy foods that include good amounts of protein, fiber, fruits and vegetables, healthy whole grains, healthy fats and plenty of water. Well! Remember: All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Read a book. Try a new recipe. Do some puzzles. __4.__

Exercise regularly with a positive attitude. Aim for at least three 30-minute training sessions a week(but more is better). I like simple exercise such as walking, but anything that raises the heart rate is good. _5._  Combine them! Some people like to listen to classical music such as Bach or Mozart, but rock music lovers will be happy to learn that this kind of music can help make them smarter as well.

A.You may be fond of music, too.

B.Your health depends on your exercise plan.

C.Aim to get this number of calories each day.

D.Don’t forget to exercise your mind while doing so.

E.You may be wondering what this has to do with us.

F.These are all good ways to help increase your intelligence.

G.Eat the right foods in addition to getting the right number of calories.

A heart-warming story tells of a woman who finally decided to ask her boss for a raise in salary. All day she felt nervous. Late in the afternoon she gathered the    36  to approach her employer. To her delight, the boss agreed to a    37 . The woman arrived home that evening to find a beautiful table   38  with their best dishes. Candles were softly burning. Her 39  had come home early and prepared a festive meal. She wondered if someone from the office had given him the information   40  , or··· did he just somehow know that she would not get the request  41 ?

She found him in the kitchen and    42     him the good news. They happily sat down to enjoy the wonderful    43    . Next to her plate the woman found a beautifully lettered card which was her husband's 44  of writing. It read “Congratulations, darling! I knew you'd get the raise! These things will tell you how much I love you.”

Someone has said that the   50  of love is when you love without measure. What this man feels for his wife is total    51  and love, whether she succeeds or  52 . His love celebrates her victories and 53  her wounds. He stands with her, no matter what life throw in their direction..

Upon receiving the Nobel for 54 , Mother Teresa said, “What can you do to  55  to the world peace? Go home and love your family.” And love your friends. Love then without measure.

Recently Dr. Cleiman has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle. During the hours when you labor through your work, you may say that you are “hot”. That is true, the time of day when you feel most energetic (full of energy) is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak(top). For some people the peak comes during the forenoon(上午前). For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so.

Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what this energy cycle means and which cycle each member of the family has.

You cannot change your cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. “Habits can help,” Dr. Cleiman believes. If your energy cycle is low in the morning but you have an important job early in the day, rise before your usual hour, and then you will work better at your low point.

Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a lazy yawn(哈欠) and stretch. Sit on the edge of bed before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome searching for clean clothes by laying them out the night before.
