18.College isn't high school. In college, when a professor has treated you unfairly, you can't turn to your mother and ask her to call the headmaster to complain. In college, you are either expected to A) take the disrespect, move on with your life and wish that the professor would still give you an A on your next test,or B) go to their office, stand your ground, and tell them exactly how they have wronged you. Both choices have their consequences, but it's up to you to tell the difference between action and inaction.I think students often forget that one of the main purposes of college is to prepare you to be independent in life.In college, you live off-campus,often in a different state or city, far away from your close family and friends. You choose your own schedule. No one forces you to go to class. The way some students deal with that sudden independence and freedom is very telling of how they end up performing in college.
There is some argument whether academics(学业) are the main focus of college,I think social relationships should come first.I'm not just saying this because I'm lazy and have bad grades. You can get through high school without ever interacting with a single person---but in college, you can't,nor do you want to.Do you really want to enter the job market without a single friend? You don't want to stay alone in your dorm room for entire four years.Make a few friends---aside from your roommates. In my case, when I have had roommate problems,I've needed to turn to a separate group of friends that can turn me away from the trouble.Being part of clubs and sports is another great way to do this---not only will you be making friends, you'll also be gaining a new skill.

After they left.I quietly asked the cashier to add those items to mine.The cashier rang everything up,and then got me a shopping cart.We put in their items and I hurried over to their car."This is for you,''I told them.

Then came the day we found something new and fun to do.We discovered we could draw pictures with chalk on our wooden front door.We could have lots of fun,so we set to work drawing and making lots of pretty pictures all over it.We had a great time.We decided to finish our pictures,knowing mom would just love them.
The praise we expected did not come.We did not understand why,but we knew all about anger,and that we were in big trouble!Off we ran to find a place to hide.In our wooded yard it was not hard for two small children to find safety.Together,we hid behind a tree and did not move.Soon we heard the frightened voices of mom and our neighbors calling out to us.We were afraid we would be found.The sun set,and it began to get dark.Those around us became more anxious,and we became more frightened.As we stayed together in the dark,we heard another voice,one we recognized with great fear:our daddy.But there was something strangely different about it.In it we heard something we had never heard before:fear and despair.Our daddy with tears running down his face,promising God his life for the safe return of his girls.
Things were different after that.We had a new daddy; it was as if the old one had been buried that day in the yard.Our whole family had been changed by one piece of chalk.

She made me leader for many group projects and that made me feel special.I think that would make any child feel special,especially when a child is in a new place with no friends.She made me want to be like that.Not to pick a"favorite"student,but to make every student feel that they are special.That year,I received the Presidential Academic Award(美国总统学术奖).I was really proud and so were my parents.
Looking back at it,I think the reason why I did so well was that I felt important.Students do better when they feel like they are important or loved.Mrs.Green always gets to know her students and forms personal relationships with them,which I will try to do some day.I just hope that there will be a student who finds me to be their favorite teacher as I found her to be mine.

With a tiresome report to write,I felt bothered at my desk.Suddenly,it occurred to me that my kids were at fault.A voice inside me insisted that I do something quickly.
"OK,you two here, but what an awful thing you are attempting!"shouting angrily,I made for them, while it became evident that  the boy wanted no part of me."Get away from us!"he shouted back,there being expression of support from his sister.
All of a sudden,I found the fault in myself.Quickly I shaped my hands into pincers(蟹钳) and crawled towards them,"Crabby(似螃蟹的)Daddy is here.Ha,Ha,Ha,he likes to yell at children,and then eat them!"My son continued to keep me away,but now he was laughing and crying at the same time.My mission to repair the damage caused by my yelling seemed to work well.Still,I regretted not having controlled myself first in a right way that my children could do after.
Need I let them know how badly they were acting by blaming them?This is a lesson that lets me think twice.It only shows just how to get rid of something (ill-feelings,responsibility) by blaming others.It's not my"best self".
We have to search for our"best self"when with our children.They don't need perfect parents,but they do need parents who are always trying to get better.Here,I'm reminded of the words of a great thinker,"When a man lives with God,his voice shall be as sweet as the murmur of the brook…"Then,in our lifetime,couldn't we always speak to our kids in such a sweet voice since most of us consider them as the most precious in the world?And before we reach this level,what should we do when we come across various difficult cases with our children?

7.Love of the Sea
My love affair with the sea began when I was no more than six years old, walking along the sandy beaches.I always wanted to make the first set of footprints in the wet sand.
Unlike many surfers who sought the perfect wave,my interests always lay beneath the sea's surface in a world I could only imagine and dream of.Soon, wearing a snorkel and a mask,I made my first solo adventures in the deep.
Perhaps the greatest turning point in my life came when I was in high school and I wrote a letter to the famous Scripps Oceanographic Institution,in San Diego, asking how I might learn more about the sea.
A kind scientist answered my letter and told me how to apply to Scripps for a summer scholarship, which I received.During one of their cruises that summer,I met Dr.Robert Norris,a marine geologist. He loved the sea almost as much as I did.Soon he was asking me what my plans were and where I expected to attend college.I told him I didn't know,so he suggested I consider his school, the University of California in Santa Barbara.
Now my love affair with the sea became a serious endeavor. If I wanted to be an undersea explorer,I needed to learn as much as I could about the laws of the physical world that controlled the environment I wanted to enter. The undersea world is not our natural world. It is unforgiving to those who make mistakes. At its greatest depths the water temperature is near freezing, the pressure is eight tons per square inch, and it is totally dark.It is easy to get lost in such a world.I needed to learn a lot about geography, navigation, meteorology, geology, biology, and many other things. While I was in school,I took a little of everything.
I decided another important thing for me to do was to join the U.S.Navy.If I was going to be an undersea explorer,I would have to lead men and women on dangerous adventures where they might get hurt, and I didn't want that to happen. In the Navy I learned discipline, organization, and how to motivate and lead people on expeditions so that we could explore the wonders of the deep.
Finally, the time came to put all that I had learned to use,to go forth with a team of men and women and explore an adventure I am still on and hope to be on for many years to come.

8.Some people who find themselves facing a problem react by just giving up.But it is not good to escape from problems by giving up or by making excuses for failures.You may be sure that all young people go through the same difficult process that you are going through:meeting new situations,developing new skills,and testing their abilities.
If you are unhappy about something, face it.Try to state the problem in a few words,so that you will know exactly what you   are up against.Then see if you can"put your finger"on the cause of your unhappiness.
In many cases,we only"think"there is no solution to a particular problem.But often we can overcome the problem and achieve the goal by making a direct attack.
For example,a boy wanted to be a debater(辩论家).When he tried out for the debating team as a freshman,the coach thought he was hopeless.He was shy; he had a high-pitched voice; and his posture(体态) was poor.Although he was given little hope of success,he took advantage of every opportunity to debate.He studied successful speakers and evaluated his own weaknesses and advantages.Then he spent many hours learning all the facts on the topics for debate,and worked at developing good posture and at speaking clearly.By his junior year,he made the school debating team,and in his senior year he was on the winning team in his state.He achieved his goal because he had made a direct attack upon his problem.
Although direct attack is often the best way to meet problems,we have to be realistic(现实的) in judging situations.Sometimes it is necessary to change either the method or the goal.
A boy who wants to be a great football player may not be too strong and not quite fast enough for football.In this situation,becoming a great football player may be an unreasonable goal for him.However,he may become outstanding in tennis or golf,and satisfy his desire to take part in sports.
A girl who is not good-looking may decide that she cannot win popularity with her face,and so she may try to develop an interesting personality,which eventually will get her much further.In this situation,she must change her method of achieving her goal.
So,although direct attack is often the best way to handle problems,it is important to study the situation and make a wise decision about what to do.

71.From the first paragraph,we can infer thatC.
A.not all people will meet the problems that they can't solve
B.not all people can solve the problems that they meet
C.all people will not give up finding the solutions to problems
