13.My life suffered a lot in summer five years ago.My father died in a car accident,leaving my mother,my two younger brothers and I alone.At that time,I was a senior high school student.After my father's funeral (葬礼),I had no choice but to drop out of school and work in a factory.
I really wanted to return to school and wanted to go to college,but I couldn't.I only hoped to bring up my two younger brothers.Life was not easy for me,for I can't afford their tuition (学费) even if I worked from day to night without stopping.Without my father's protection,I thought I was a slave to the fate.
Later on,something changed my life.I still remember that it was a rainy day.I put myself in the rain and walked slowly in the street.
Suddenly the rain stopped!I raised my head and found"the sky"was in fact a dark blue umbrella.Then I noticed a middle-aged man with one leg on crutch (拐杖) standing behind me.He said to me,"Why not run without an umbrella?If you didn't run,you would get drenched."
The man told me that he was promoter (推销员).He once dreamed of being a policeman,but an accident ruined his dream.Though his present job was not suitable for his legs,it was wonderful start to him.He was very happy that he didn't lose heart and still"ran"on the road of life…
I was encouraged by the man's words.I went to a big city and I became an assurance representative (保险代理人).After two years'running,I did well and my family condition turned better little by little.Later I returned to school and succeeded in my entrance to university.
Life is like this.When you are in rainy days in your life,if you couldn't find a way to prevent you from being wet,you would be overwhelmed (被制服).But if you decide to get rid of it,you'll discover that the rainy days last not so long as you imagine.

9.Imagine there is a glass of water on a table in front of you.It has water in it but it is not full. How do you describe the glass?Do you say it is half full or half empty?
If you say half full, you might be an optimist. If you say half empty, you might be the opposite-a pessimist.
Optimism and pessimism represent your general attitude toward certain situations or life in general. And your attitude toward life may be more important than you think.
A new study suggests that your level of optimism may affect your health.People who are optimistic may live longer than those who are pessimistic.
Researchers at Harvard University's School of Public Health in Boston did the study. They compared women with"a general expectation that good things will happen"to women who were less optimistic. They found that the optimists had a much lower risk of getting several deadly diseases, including cancer, heart disease, stroke, respiratory disease and certain types of infection.
The researchers published their findings in the American Journal of Epidemiology.Epidemiology is the study of how diseases spread and how they can be controlled.
Eric Kim is one of the study leaders. He says there is increasing evidence that strengthening psychological resilience may help prevent disease. With it,it's easier to recover from difficulty or change.Kim says that these new findings suggest that people should make efforts to increase their resilience and optimism.
He says optimism is connected with healthier behaviors and healthier ways of dealing with difficulty.Optimists tend to take better care of themselves by exercising, eating healthy foods and getting enough sleep.
However, the researchers say that healthy behaviors of optimistic people only partly explain the connection with reduced risk of disease.

5.The human body is designed to move.But modern lifestyles and office jobs rarely give us the chance to move around.As we know,we're while we're eating; we sit in the car and we sit while we watch TV.And many of us sit for many hours at work.
New research shows that sitting less than three hours a day might extend your life by two years.Peter Katzmarzyk,a scientist at the University of Louisiana in the southern United States,says that sitting is ubiquitous in our lives,meaning it is something we do all the time,everywhere.
However,Mr.Katzmarzyk says that does not mean you can sit for the rest of your waking hours.He also says you may exercise often,"We can't throw away physical activity.It's extremely important.We have 60years of research showing us that."
Mr.Katzmarzyk and his colleagues are part of a new generation of researchers studying how sitting all day affects length of life."Studies that have assessed the relationship between sitting and mortality(死亡率)or television viewing and mortality are very rare.There's only been a few of them,actually five or six now,in the last four or five years."They found that cutting television time to less than two hours a day could add one-point four years to life.
Luckily,change is already coming to some offices,especially in the design of desks.A"standing desk"lets people stand while they work.Another new design is called the"treadmill desk."A treadmill is an exercise machine that lets you walk in one place.Even some U.S.schools are beginning to experiment with desks that are part bicycle to keep children moving.That's one of the strategies that many companies are using now.
Mr.Katzmarzyk also says studying this problem has inspired his team to make a few changes in their own lives.
