While attending a conference, I returned to my hotel room late one evening. The overhead light outside my door was burned out and I had       finding the keyhole. When I       to open the door, I       around the wall for a light switch. I found a plate where a switch was       installed... but no switch!
Not discouraged easily, I remembered       a lamp by the bed when I deposited my luggage      in the day. I found the bed in the       and then the lamp, but when I switched it on, nothing     ! I thought that perhaps if I opened the curtains I might be able to use whatever light comes in from the       to find another lamp. So I  my way slowly across the room to the curtains and... no drawstring(拉绳)! I finally stumbled(跌跌撞撞地走)around        I found a desk lamp which actually     !
That evening I discovered in a whole new way just how dark the world       be and how   necessary light is! But even more necessary than       light is the light that shines from people --the light of       and faith. Because, for many people, the world is a dark and       place. For someone today just may be stumbling in discouragement or sadness or fear and in        of some light. So let your light shine. Whatever light you       may be a beacon(灯塔) of hope and encouragement. And if you feel that your light is       a candle in a forest remember -- there isn’t enough darkness in all the world to       the light of one small candle.

In the process of my growing up I cannot remember hearing the words ‘‘I love you” from my father. When your father never says them to you when you are a child,it gets        for him to say those words as he gets older. In fact,I could not honestly remember when I had last        my love to him either.I decided to        my pride and make the first       .After some hesitation,in our next phone conversation I burst out the words.“Dad...I love you!”
There was a silence at the other end and he        replied,“Well, same back at ya!”
I chuckled and said,“Dad,I know you love me,and when you are        ,I know you will say what you want to say.’’
Fifteen minutes later my mother        and nervously asked,“Paul,is everything okay?’’
A few weeks later,Dad        our phone conversation with the words,“Paul,I love you.’’I was at work during this conversation and the tears were rolling down my cheeks as I        “heard’’ the love.As we both sat there in tears we realized that this special moment had taken our father-son relationship to a new
A short while after this special moment,my father        escaped death following heart surgery. Many times since,I have        whether l would have ever “heard” the love if I had not taken the first step and Dad had not        the surgery.

One of the greatest sources of unhappiness,in my experience,is the difficulty we have in accepting things as they are.
When we see something we don’t like,we wish it could be different. We cry out for something better. That may be human nature,or perhaps it’s something ingrained(根深蒂固的) in our culture. The root of the unhappiness isn’t necessarily that we want things to be different. However, it’s that we decided we didn’t like it in the first place. We’ve judged it as bad, rather than saying, “It's not bad or good, and it just is it.”
In one of my books,I said“You should expect people to mess up and expect things to go differently than you planned”.Some readers said it's too sorrowful to expect things to go wrong. However, it’s only negative if you see it as negative and judge it as bad.Instead, you could accept it as the way the world works and try to understand why that is.
This can be applied to whatever you do:how other people act at work, how politics works and how depressing the news media can be.Accept these things as they are,and try to understand why they’re that way.It will save you a lot of sadness, because you’ll no longer say,“Oh.1 wish bad things didn’t happen!’’
Does it mean you can never change things? Not at a11.But change things not because you can’t accept things as they are,but because you enjoy the process of changing, learning and growing.
Can we make this world a better place? You can say that you’11 continue to try to do things to help others,to grow as a person,to make a difference in this world. That’s the correct path you choose to take, because you enjoy that path. Therefore, when you find yourself judging and wishing for difference, try a different approach:accept, and understand. It might lead to some interesting results.

小题5:What is the main theme of the passage?
A.Expecting things to be different gives us hope.

D.Judging good or bad is important for our world.
When something goes wrong, it can be very satisfying to say, "Well, it's so-and-so's fault,"or "I know I'm late, but it's not my fault; the car broke down. " It is probably not your fault, but once you form the habit of blaming somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start focusing on how to remedy the situation. This is the winner's key to success.
Winners are great at overcoming problems. For example, if you were late because your car broke down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly. Or, you might start to carry along with you the useful phone numbers, so you could call for help when in need. For another example, if your colleague causes you problems on the job for lack of responsibility or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. Ask to work with a different person, or don't rely on this person. You should accept that the person is not reliable and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of how your colleague(同事) fails to do his job well.
This is what being a winner is all about-creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don't have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and opportunities to develop their own talents. So, stop focusing on "whose fault it is." Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stones for success.

When Joan gave birth to the first boy in her family in three generations, she and her husband were overjoyed. So were her parents. Joan expected her elder sister, Sally, to be just as delighted as them. Joan had always admired Sally--the beauty and the star of the family--and felt happy about her achievements.
But since the baby's arrival, the sisters have become distant. Joan feels hurt for Sally seems completely uninterested in her baby. Sally, who has no children, claims that her younger sister "acts as if no one ever had a baby before."
Neither Sally nor Joan understands that the real cause of the current coldness is that their family roles have suddenly changed to the opposite. Finally Joan seems to be better than her elder sister--and Sally doesn't like it! Their distance may be temporary, but it shows that childhood competition don't fade easily as ages grow. It can remain powerful in relationships throughout life.
In a study of the University of Cincinnati, 65 men and women between ages 25 and 93 were asked how they felt about their brothers and sisters. Nearly 75 percent admitted having hidden competitive feelings. In a few cases, these emotions were so strong as to have affected their entire lives.
Many adult brothers and sisters are close, supportive--yet still tend to compete. Two brothers I know turn into killers when on opposite sides of a tennis net. Off the court, they are the best of friends. My own younger sister can't wait to tell me when I've put on weight. However, she's a terrible cook and that pleases me; I tease her when she comes to dinner. Happily, despite these small failings, we have been an important resource for each other.
In between the very competitive and the generally supportive children lie those who say that no friendship should survive. Some brothers and sisters stay at arm's length, but never give up competition completely. Why do these puzzling, unproductive, often painful relationships continue to exist?

When it comes to friends, people always know this old saying——A friend in need is a friend indeed. The best friend a man has in the world may    him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has       with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good reputation, may         our faith. A man may        the money he has. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man’s reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are ready to fall on their knees to do us        when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of hatred when        settles its cloud upon our heads. The one        unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never        him, the one that never proves         or distrusted, is his dog.
A man’s dog stands by him in richness and in        , in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the cold wind blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his        side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to         ; he will lick the wounds and sores that come from encounter with the roughness of the world. He will guard the sleep of his master        he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he        . When wealth and reputation fall to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journeys through the heavens.
If fortune drives the master forth, a deserted person in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of         him, to guard him against danger, to fight against his         . And when the last         of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace, and his body is         in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends         their ways, there by the grave will the          dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even in death.
